be here, um janice america. tani passed away early this morning. they only learned last week that she had been diagnosed with cancer. and so this has been very sudden. obviously she is very beloved as well. we have seen her throughout the years ever since nearly 60 years ago, she was started glide with her husband, reverend cecil williams, the two of them known as community activists as warriors for social justice. who really tried to spread love throughout san francisco. she was also known in her own right as a poet laureate for san francisco, from 2000 to 2000 to a very accomplished poet whose work was known nationwide throughout the world, and she was beloved by the japanese american community. as somebody who spoke out about civil rights, her own family incarcerated by the american government during world war two, um today i spoke with one member of the japantown community who talks about what an icon and she was for both people there as well as throughout san francisco. she's just a role model on so many different fronts to artists in the comm

before we get to the budget, though we are just now getting word that san francisco glide co founder janice america tani has died. she was a well known activist and beloved former poet laureate in san francisco. and along with her husband, as you know, supervisor. the reverence is a williams america. tani was recognized for her decades long work, helping the underserved residents of san francisco and today glide expressing its grief over her passing, saying quote. she brought fierce courage and spirit, too. everything she did. mayor london breed, describing her as a visionary, a revolutionary artist and the very embodiment of san francisco's compassionate spirit. she was 80 years old supervisor haney, i know that glide is in your district. you knew her well such a loss for the city. devastating loss. glide is absolutely one of the most essential san francisco institutions. and it's compassion. it's service was embodied in dr america tiny, she touched the lives of countless people in this community and the tenderloin and all around the world and we grieve with the guide family. we agree with

she discovered janice's lifeless body covered with stab wounds. the dog, bowie, was also stabbed to death. the savage attack left some neighbors stunned. >> it hits home really hard to me because we have two dogs. we actually live right here in this building about 50 feet away from where the murder occurred. it's just astonishing something could happen like that so close to home and how much it can really affect you emotionally. >> so far police have not said whether they have any suspects. investigators worked throughout the night going door to door in search of surveillance video and sending divers into a nearby pond for clues. a $10,000 reward has been offered for information leading to an arrest. >> i would always advise somebody when they're late at night, male or female to be with somebody they know just to have their back. that's what i'm going to be doing from here on out. >> it's just scary. i don't know what else to tell you. it's just scary. >> there have already been 82 homicides in atlanta this year. up 60% from last year. >> last yea
