let's begin coverage in georgia where new coronavirus cases are up 230% right now. cnn's natasha chen is live dekalb county. one of the new hot spots for covid infections and the surge is already interrupted the start of the new school year at one school, more than 100 kids now in quarantine. bring us up to speed with the latest. >> reporter: right. so the charter school in atlanta started class last tuesday and within a couple of days, they had to inform families of more than 100 students to quarantine and that's because as of friday afternoon, they've had 14 positive cases. that's because they've been actually doing a lot of testing to detect these. employees of theirs required to get tested before the school started and must continue that weekly. students strongly encouraged to test, and so out of about 1900 tests done before tuesday, they detected some positive cases and then a few more after classes started. mostly affected is that sixth grade class. nearly 100 sixth graders in quarantine. eighth graders are the ones having to move classes online because the ei

this is wrapping up in dekalb county, georgia. they vaccinated 230 people today. that's better than they expected to do. this is the third time the county has run such an event, only the second time they offered such incentive like a gift card give away, and each time in the past month, they've seen more people come in. that's a good thing. across the country, we know vaccination rates are picking up, that's true in georgia as well. the vaccination rate, 85% higher than it was three weeks ago. that's the seven day average of new vaccine doses administered. some of the people coming here have been teenagers who are getting ready to go to school this week. we talked to one 13-year-old who was a little skeptical, in the last week, decided it was best to do this before she goes back to class. >> i don't want to go to school, catch the virus. first i thought if i got the vaccine, virus went into my body, i saw people sick that didn't have the vaccine. >> that's worse, right? >> yes. >> reporter: the fear of actually getting covid. of course, that's a worse experience t

republicans in georgia are actively trying to take over elections in a crucial democratic stronghold. the atlanta journal-constitution says that still with us, victoria defrancesco soto, bill kristol. pictorial, you know this, activists are capping a four-day march for democracy with a rally where you are. the reverend william barber said, look, democracies in trouble, if this is the worst attack we have seen since the civil war, this needs to be massive. what needs to happen here? >> we need to see a movement. and it's really very much looking at the playbook of the 1960s. what was that playbook? it was pushing against over two dozen jim crow laws that restrict voting across the american south. we are starting to see the same thing, chris so what we are seeing in this fight is, folks going to washington, i'm going to assert my texas bias here, but i think the presence of the texas democrats from the legislature here, has really helped keep this in the spotlight. at the same time, you see the civil disobedience, grassroots marches, with sheila jackson lee that you saw yesterday. we sa

put coercive pressure on vice president mike pence to reject electoral college votes from arizona, georgia and pennsylvania, to proclaim a power no vice president ever exercised and doesn't exist in the constitution. and mike pence refused to do it. do you know what? they trashed the place and they entered and wounded 140 police officers. now we have representatives from a major political party in texas representing african americans, mexican americans, white people, native americans, who are coming forward to say the voting rights are subjected to a gauntlet, an obstacle course. they say this is a up form of voter suppression. i was delighted to your my friend that it pained him -- to hear my friend that it pained him, mr. fallon, to hear about voter suppression inflicted on african-americans. but at some point apparently, it all ended and what you have come to washington to talk about is apparently just a figment of your imagination. so we can't trust the african-american community or hispanic community or native american community or voting rights lawyers about this. we are supposed to,
