in the last two and half months, it is all gone. >> it's interesting you frame it around georgia. that may be the single most important factor here. people got very excited about inflation, it is possible this is all been about biden getting much more backing than he was expecting to. and steadily running into trouble, as you almost inevitably expect any present to do when they realize they have overstated the potential fiscal impulse. they overshoot both directions. i think probably, the single biggest factor here is excitement subsequently dissipating about what we used to call a blue wave. caroline: excitement around inflation i feel like has reason still to be there. oil was at $76. blink and you miss it, it comes down a little bit. i don't understand why we are's all of a sudden thinking that inflation is not a problem. >> that is what most and current -- what most concerns me, there is nothing other than the transitory elements, such as lumber. but what has improved in the last three months to make you think inflation is less of a concern. you have seen before, inflation com

seats if this georgia law had been in place. i mean they see, to eli and ari's point, they seem clear-eyed about the threat. if you could just pick up on ari's point that today's speech was really the first time that the rhetoric and the bully pulpit seemed in line with, commensurate to the threat they're facing. i'd like to know what you think the appropriate next steps are on both these paths, the public -- i don't know, public relations, public education, whatever you want to call it and the behind-the-scenes action to have federal voting rights legislation passed by this congress ahead of the midterms, because i think what everyone agrees on is that this supreme court, when you've got justice alito trotting out the word voter fraud, which wasn't a thing. if he had bill barr's phone number, bill barr could have told him so. you have no guarantee that the legal path and democrats say they plan to sue more states for their laws. but there's no guarantee that, one, it will be successful or, two, that it will be speedy. >> we hav

then in march of 2021, georgia's legislature passed a law. many of that law's provisions make it harder for people to vote. the complaint alleges the state enacted those restrictions with the purpose of denying or abridging the right to vote on account of race or color. host: mr. george terwilliger, what do you think about the case dd -- the drg has to make? -- ddo g has to make? -- v doj -- the doj has to make? guest: that will be played out in court. the central premise of the department's case and what the attorney general stated is that the georgia legislature acted with a discriminatory intent. i think that is going to be very difficult to prove under the relevant jurisprudence. i think others have questioned, legitimately, and i think this will be an issue if what the georgia legislature did actually made it harder to vote. georgia has a very liberal, open voting process in terms of the number of days that voting by mail and other means is possible. and so forth. as the supreme court said in the arizona case, placing certain requirement

some a pass in some states like georgia, some of just the introducing others. so in 2022, during the mid term elections, you can honestly expect a lot more of all the suppression tactics in law's being have altogether on the local level. people just seem to be aware, they need to know how to get around these voting laws. and again, i have a lot more job security because this country continues to implement in a whole graces policy. and chris, as you alluded to a little bit earlier, the in the supreme court, this decision is a very awful decision, but it fell 63 along ideological lines. conservative doing what they do, best, upholding white supremacy. but just as atlanta, kagan to think, it's worth noting here, she said, quote, maybe some think that voters depression is a relic of story. and so the need for poems section 2 have coming, gone. but congress gets to make that call because it hasn't done so. this court to duty is to apply the law as it's written. what are your thoughts about that, chris? what i'm glad just skating was in the sand. i think she could ha

from arizona to missouri to nebraska to georgia. i mean we could tell -- to texas. we see this happening. it is a concerted effort. it is an all-out effort on the part of the republican party. i think what you have been saying over the course of these many weeks, nikole, you have been sounding the alarm, you have been trying to tell folk that we are in serious danger, that democracy is in serious danger. i think it is time for president biden to go on the offensive. i think he needs to give a speech about not the state of the union but the state of american democracy from the oval office, to set the terms of the debate, to bring the fight to these people, because the stakes are that high. we keep seeing democrats on their heels while republicans are attacking at every front, on every front. it seems to me, given what we have described, what you have described, what we know, democrats have to go aggressive, and if they don't we need to start asking questions why. >> okay. i want to throw out everything i was going to ask you guys. let's talk about this. what does tha

>> in this state, no one ever thought we have to monitor elections in georgia. i just assumed elections were accurate. and i trusted our officials. looking back on it, it's not a very good thing i did, but i did. i trusted the officials and i still do to some extent. i think we know the ones that don't tell the truth and tried to. well, i don't call it corrupt corruption because i don't think that's a good definition for it. >> woodruff: and they're monitoring, president carter, they're monitoring for fraud. they're also monitoring for access. make sure people who should be able to vote can vote. how you mean how concerned are you? and again, the fact that your own carter center is now involv in this. >> i think all over the world, we've always, ever since the carter center was founded, tried to promote national involvement in the people in election themselves and make sure that votes were counted accurately. and all of those things have gone by the board because of a republican state legislature, who take the position that trump is espoused. so i think we'll ha

with me is hank johnson of georgia. he's a member of the house transportation and infrastructure and judiciary committees. thanks for being with us. how do you see this unfolding? we have bipartisan support for the part of the bill that you would have assumed we had bipartisan support for. the fixing of roads, bridges, public transport. we've got some problems on the much bigger bill that democrats are interested in. >> well, i tell you, thank you for having me this morning, ali. i think the fact that democrats control the house and the senate, though those -- that control is very slight. we do have the ability to deliver for the american people. we already delivered the american rescue plan which lifted our economy from the doldrums of another great recession. and we injected money into this economy which got people back to work, got our children back to school safely or at least gives them a chance of returning to school safely now. and put money into peoples pockets. and made an initial investment to rebuild america.

again, you asked about georgia. yes, senator warnock be up again xt year ands we said, we're not going to be able to just out organize thilevel of voter suppression. the scary thing about the georgia bill, which is part of a trade we are seeing inther states, it has that piece in there that would make it easier for the stateo overturn elections. they have already gone about the process of removing people, removing officials from some of the election boards in some of the counties. that was made possible by this new law. with that provision, even if we have organized and when the vote, they can always come back and do exactly what donald trump was trying to get the secretary of state to do on that phone call, which is to go out and find 11,000 vot or decide fulton county, predominately black county in georgia, that that counties vote should not be counted. this bill gives them the ability to do that. we cannot out organize theevel of jim crow oppression we're seeing. we came close to spinning $25 million in their lim
