we're seeing a younger dem dpraf if -- demographic and a very sick demographic because the delta variant replicates high and the viral loads are high and as a result, these patients are real sick. that's why the hospitals in the south and southwest and up to the midwest are being filled now. really at levels similar to what we saw in january. >> so you heard chad snielsen talking about the people that work in the hospital that are infected. there are people who work in the hospital that are not vaccinated and they are the bulk of the infections. the department of veteran's affairs is mandating many of the front line workers get vaccinated, which is a major step for the biden administration, right? they were reluctant to start mandates at the federal level. this has now changed. let listen to the head of the cdc. >> we're not counting on vaccine mandates at all. >> what i think you won't see is a requirement from the federal government to have people vaccinated. >> that's not the role of the federal government. that is the role that institutions, private sector entities and others. >> oka

if the delta variant is not breaking through, why all this talk about boosters? >> yeah, brighton. it's a great question. i think the purpose of the boosters is really to help supplements our him union response and it's getting confusing here because pfizer is coming out with her announcement last week that it really did imply that it had to have boosters. all americans did. i think if you really just paused to look at the data and that's with the u.s. officials did, even looking at israeli data and other countries you see that select populations, brian, do you need a boost at some point. and let's say anywhere from 6 to 12 months after the first doses. those are primarily the 5% of americans who have immunocompromised addition. or have organ transplant. and we're looking at elderly populations. france, the uk, and israel are moving ahead with these boosters. the same dose that they got in the first and second, but a third dose for those special populations and high risk workers. i think that's what a lot of the context was so there's no data to support that the majority of america

i'm not living in fear of the delta variant. having visits but trying to keep some distance, consider mask use. these would be additional precautions for vulnerable individuals. >> reporter: that's where we got two hands here. one of them saying, yes, the vaccine is working. it's doing what it is supposed to do. that is to protect us from serious illness and death. on the other hand is the fact that covid is continuing to spread even among the fully vaccinated. perhaps we should consider masking up when going into places outside of our own home bubbles. we're looking at concerts, restaurants, at bars here. there is community spread that's taking place. the outside advisory board to the cdc suggesting that there should be a potential third booster shot for immunocompromised individuals. pfizer has acknowledged that after six months the antibodies begin to wear off among vaccinated individuals. that's why you're seeing concern here at the highest levels in the u.s. when you see the spikes it's not about the ub e unvaccinated. >> e

we've been tracking all morning the delta variant. it's been surging across the nation. can you give us an idea of how things are across michigan? >> it was very scary in april. i got back home yesterday. it was an odd experience. i went to a din were 700 people last night. i was the only person wearing a mask. i come from washington. you see many of the staffers that are in the buildings that i've worked we have tested positive this week, and it's an individual source right now, but i think -- i'm vaccinated. i've decided to wear a mask when i am out in large public gatherings and i don't know if people have been vaccinate order not, and i find myself giving that message to a lot of leaders in the auto industry last night. i know people don't want to wear them, but people are getting sick again, and i know several people who have been vaccinated who have gotten the breakthroughing and i think we individually have to look at this. i don't want covid. even being vaccinated, i don't want the danger of even a minor case of covid. i think we all have to think about that. >>
