and before this, we heard from benny thompson, the chairman of this commission. he's who said that he was going to follow the facts as they move forward. we also heard from liz cheney one of the 2 republicans on this panel who had broken with her party and agreed to cooperate on this commission. because the republicans got quite an interesting strategy that just called calling fowl only. that's right. the republicans don't want this to happen at all. neither party really wanted this to be the forum in which they did this. the democrats wanted in independent commission that reported to congress rather than the select committee, that they have the republicans voted that down. and kevin mccarthy, the house speaker, who initially criticize president trump, for his actions on january 6 today said that this is a sham process. it's a partisan process and the american public should not put their faith in it. jamie raskin, a democratic congressman, who is on this committee as well passed by report is a little earlier and said it's a bit rich that republicans are saying th

i asked benny thompson about the time frame. he doesn't know how long it will go. it will go as long as it takes. and what will they investigate? the root causes of this including donald trump's role, including the role of some republican members of congress and conversations that they had with donald trump in the run up to january 6 and january 6 themselves. when i asked benny thompson last night where wl this committee should investigate kevin mccarthy's phone call on january 6, he said that is part of the evidence that needs to be put out as part of the report. last week mccarthy told me he's open to speaking to the select committee. he's speaking to reporters in a matter of minutes. but this could move pretty fast. the question now is what will kevin mccarthy do? will he name members, what kind of members will he name and will they be some who voted to over turn the january 6 electoral results, all questions for republican leader as this investigation begins to take shape. >> kevin mccarthy has five to select. we see pelosi has made the selection of her eight a

benny thompson said that kinzinger has been discussed and a welcome addition if he were to be named and melanie zanona is saying that the speak ser considering naming him. she said we'll see at the press conference. at the same time there are questions about other republicans including people who voted to impeach donald trump about whether they might get the selection. but one jaime herrera butler said she is not willing to serve and criticized this committee. >> unless this is made up of people who are not members of congress, the american people cannot trust the results. because everybody has got a dog in the fight. whether it is who is going to be in charge of the -- of the congress or who is going to win re-election. >> reporter: so now next is the hearing next week, there is some discussion about exactly how that will take place. police officers who defended this capitol will be testifying and the committee members who are part of the committee are meeting with nancy pelosi in her office later today. >> jaime herrera butler is not wrong in what she's saying about the need for a ver

democrats who serve on the committee are supportive of going that route including the chairman benny thompson who told me yesterday that adding kinzinger would be a good addition in his view, this coming after of course, pelosi naming liz cheney, both cheney and kinzinger were the only two to vote to create the select committee but they would be defied kevin mccarthy who pulled back all five of his picks this week after pelosi vetoed two of the republican picks because of her concerns she said that they would undermine the integrity of the investigation. but kinzinger has no qualms about angering kevin mccarthy. he's made clear he's willing to do it. he's indicated that for months and both kinzinger and cheney have been the foremost critics of donald trump and what happened on january 6. so the expectation that she was trying -- that pelosi is looking to add more bipartisan credence to this committee, not just by potentially adding kinzinger which it looks like she will do, but also adding outside advisers who are republicans like denver riggleman who met with staff yesterday. this i

liz cheney will give the opening statement after the chairman benny thompson does. that is unusual typically for an event like this. but everything about this investigation or this effort to put together this committee has been rather unusual after republicans blocked any sort of -- trying to block any investigation from going forward. but this is the first step before they get into more of the detailed investigative efforts and looking into what happened here. but expect some testimony and new video footage from body cam video about what they experienced. >> melanie, you and manu together have some really interesting reporting on the tension behind the scenes and has kind of erupted publicly between speaker pelosi and kevin mccarthy including your description of a private phone call between the two last week. how bad is this relationship now? >> well to be clear. nancy pelosi and house minority leader kevin mccarthy never had a great relationship but now it is in the down right gutter. mccarthy hinted that her decision to veto the two are going to come back to haun

thompson and jamie raskin and adam schiff, they think that's enough to just ensure her political career as a republican is over. so could they strip her of her committee assignments? of course they could. they could also expel her from the house republican conference in two thirds vote that would be 140, i believe, if my math is right, republicans voting against her, 141. i don't think they'll do that. but you can't rule it out at this point because cheney is in the last day again whether you think it's right or wrong, republicans think it's wrong. they think that -- she said pelosi was right and mccarthy should never be speaker. two pretty -- two comments that really anger a lot of house republican. >> no doubt about that. jake, let me ask you about south carolina senator tim scott telling axios last week he doesn't think negotiationings on police reform will be able to continue past the end of this month. we're just a few days away from that deadline. again, based on your reporting, what do you know about where things stand right now about trying to get any traction on police reform?
