the supreme court has just issue aid ruling on a challenge to arizona's voting law changes. let's get to jessica schneider for more. what did they rule. >> this is a major decision coming from the supreme court on voting rights and in particular how challengers to many of the restrictive voting bills around the country enacted by the republican-led states, how they'll be able to enk the laws in court. so first of all, i'll tell you that the supreme court was ruling specifically on two arizona laws, the supreme court upholding these two laws. these were one regulation, one law, the first regulation said that election officials had to discard ballots that were cast at the wrong polling precinct. the second was a law that actually made it a criminal offense to help in ballot collection. something that critics call ballot harvesting. and it said that anyone who wasn't a family member or a caretaker or an election worker could not help another person deliver their ballot to the right precinct. so the supreme court saying that both of those regulations or laws were okay. now that

and at issue were the two arizona laws. one said that if you cast a ballot in the wrong precinct, it has to be wholly discarded. and the second said -- had to do with restrictions on who could deliver a ballot to the polling place. it said only family members, close family members and really was more restrictive there. and a lower court said both of these laws had an impact on minorities and struck them down under the voting right act. and today a justice writing about a 6-3 majority, and that's breaking down along ideological lines. he said the laws were okay. and what's really important about it is his reasoning. you heard echoes of what the conservatives have been saying, what president trump is saying. that states have a right to pass laws to combat voting fraud. and so what this means is now the court today has limited the reach of section 2, and it comes as states across the country are passing more and more restrictive laws. so it should have a big impact in the near future. >> yeah. for georgia, to florida, to texas

. >> joining us is democratic congressman ruben gayago from arizona. he was on the house floor and helped some of his colleagues out of the house chamber when it was attacked. i want to get your reaction to the list of the additions to the committee. three voted to object to the 2020 electoral college. two of them also signed on to the texas lawsuit that challenged the votes from some swing states. your reaction to the choices? >> well, look, this is kevin mccarthy's attempt at basically bringing a clown show to congress, especially with the lead clown being jim jordan. this is a very serious situation, we had an attempted nurse. the fact that mccarthy is not taking it serious tells us who is in control, and that's likely donald trump. the fact that donald trump is making the call who is on the committee is disturb inbecause it is the person that should be investigated in the process. >> speaker pelosi told manu raju that their vote isn't the decision for being on the committee. should itt be one? >> certainly allowing jim jordan who is a walking clown

now, next question, earlier this week the supreme court upheld restrictive voting laws in arizona. one viewer wants to know after this ruling is there any realistic way to challenge similar laws in other states? >> there is, but it got harder this week. now, the supreme court this week upheld two restrictive voting laws issued by the state of arizona. this was a 6-3 ruling straight along ideological lines. the six conservative justices, roberts, alito, thomas, kavanaugh, gorsuch and barrett all voted to uphold the restrictive laws. the three liberal justices all dissented. they said they would have struck it down. the challengers here have to show that there's a discriminatory purpose behind the law. the challengers said it impacts minorities more. however, the majority opinion here said, no, that's not enough. the law applies evenly and we don't see enough of an impact, so we will continue to see people, including the justice department who is now sued against the georgia laws. because the hill just got a little steeper in the federal courts and the supreme court has made very cle

we saw last week, new revelations out of arizona about him putting pressure on county officials the same he did in georgia, trying to overturn the result are. i think it would be an incr incredible gamble for mccarthy to not select members for the committee. but the question is, does he appoint anyone who voted to certify joe biden's victory or does he appoint skeptics of the victory. i think he has snignaled disciplining cheney. she may be disciplined before marjorie taylor greene and it sends a clear signal to the roughly 1/4 of republican voters who are uneasy with the way trump handled the party. they are the subordinate part of the party. >> thank you for your opinion. >> thank you for having me. >> former south african president is lashing out at the judges that sentenced him, he was sentenced to 15 months in jail for contempt of court for refusing to ask questions from an anti-corruption commission. he was supposed to turn himself in sunday and that is delayed until the court hears the challenge to the jail term july 12th. >>> things like detention without trial, should never agai
