maricopa is arizona's most populous county. county supervisors there reportedly got texts and phone calls as votes were being counted and later as the votes were being contested. here are two of those voice mails from rudy giuliani, one to clint hickman, who is the chair of the maricopa county chair of supervisors at the time, and another to bill gates. the music you'll hear underneath the call was added by the arizona republic in their online story. >> this is rudy giuliani. i was very happy to see this is going to be forensic audit of the machines. i really wanted to talk to you about it. the president wanted me to give you a call, all right? thank you. give me a call back. i would really appreciate. hello. it's rudy giuliani, president trump's lawyer. if you get a chance, would you please give me a call? i have a few things to talk over with you. maybe we can get this thing fixed up. it's a shame republicans are in this situation. i think there may be a nice way to resolve this for everybody. so, give me a call, bill. i'm on

amplifying the big lie and praising arizona republicans despite what arizona senate president and leader of the effort karen van publicly says. >> this is not about trump. this is not about overturning the election. this has never been about anything other than election integrity. >> reporter: her e-mails tell another story. obtained by watchdog group american oversight last month. van writes in a december e-mail she spoke with mayor giuliani at least six times in two weeks and mentions a private two hour meeting with giuliani and the trump legal team. in november van writes she asked the trump legal team to please file a lawsuit to halt vote certification in the state. she tells another voter last december about a personal call from president trump thanking us for pushing to prove any fraud. but van wasn't the only elected official who received calls from the trump orbit. maricopa supervisor bill gates got a voice mail 2020 from then trump lawyer rudy giuliani. >> i have a few things i'd like to talk. maybe we can get this thing fixed up. >> reporter: do you believe this entire thing wa

democrats challenge two arizona rules. one, that tosses out ballots when voters show up at the wrong pre precinct. the ruling was 6-3. that a reflection of the court's powerful conservative majority and it sends a clear signal this court believes states get wide latitude in the voting rules. we are joined with the big final day decisions. >> very big, indeed. and the take away from this is that this is going to make it a lot harder for challengers of these voting laws to actually prevail here. because in this 6 3 decision written, this didn't just uphold the arizona laws that have been in effect for many years. but this restricted the ability of challengers to really challenge section 2. and the reason why this is so important is that really section 2 is the only way now for these people to challenge these voting laws. that's because in 2013, the supreme court struck down essentially section 5 of the voting rights act. that was a section that mandated that jurisdictions with the history of racial discrimination, they neede

now there are no good options for this audit here in arizona. it was -- first of all, it was unnecessary. our republican county board of supervisors, which is 4-1 republican conducted two audits using election assistance commission approved companies, bipartisan commission, non-partisan professional companies two audits confirmed we had a fair election here in maricopa county. it was no purpose to begin with but since it's been a conclusion in search of evidence and now that no evidence of fraud or error has been detected, they've taken to inventing statistics and facts made up out of thin air about more ballots received than requested, which of course is thoroughly debunked. there is no good resolution for this. when i started, there is no good that can come out of this. >> here is the thing, when this audit and, you know, i put the quotes around it, when this is done, whatever it's done, it been going on and on and still goes on and on and there is an outcome and what chris said is powerful. you can go off the cliff or jump off the train going

ward targeted arizona election officials with a pressure campaign, according to "the arizona republic." but inlike in georgia where the gop secretary of state recorded a call with the president, the keymar -- key maricopa county election official refused to speak to trump. ron brownstein joins us. why are these latest revelations significant to you? >> happy fourth to you and everybody watching. i think there are two real important conclusions that come out of these revelations in arizona. one is that we simply do not know all the ways in which donald trump used and abused his power as president. it just underscores the need for a more comprehensive understanding of what he did in office. and all of the ways in which he may have gone beyond the proper boundaries of the use of presidential power, especially given that he may ask the country to restore it to him again in a little over three years. i was talking to our colleague john dean a couple of weeks ago for a story i was writing. he noted that when nixon left office, we had so much of a better idea of everything that had happened

the supreme court has just issue aid ruling on a challenge to arizona's voting law changes. let's get to jessica schneider for more. what did they rule. >> this is a major decision coming from the supreme court on voting rights and in particular how challengers to many of the restrictive voting bills around the country enacted by the republican-led states, how they'll be able to enk the laws in court. so first of all, i'll tell you that the supreme court was ruling specifically on two arizona laws, the supreme court upholding these two laws. these were one regulation, one law, the first regulation said that election officials had to discard ballots that were cast at the wrong polling precinct. the second was a law that actually made it a criminal offense to help in ballot collection. something that critics call ballot harvesting. and it said that anyone who wasn't a family member or a caretaker or an election worker could not help another person deliver their ballot to the right precinct. so the supreme court saying that both of those regulations or laws were okay. now that

what do you think the lasting effect of this audit will be for the republican party in arizona? it sounds as though it could become a litmus test, republicans trying to win elections in that state may have to attach themselves to the results of this audit. what do you think? >> i think most people have even forgotten -- most sane people, let me rephrase, have forgotten that this audit is going on, right? joe biden has been president for over six months now. he swore in six months ago. but the people who are not -- who are part of the trump cult are putting all their eggs in this maricopa basket and there is people that actually believe that trump is getting reinstated in august. they can't tell you how, they can't tell you why, they can't give you any sort of legal precedent, they can't make a logical argument. but the same way the tooth fairy shows up, they think there's going to be somebody showing up and spreading dust and trump is going to be president. and then we ask ourselves how is it possible that people are not getting vaccinated? and it's because the republican party,

and at issue were the two arizona laws. one said that if you cast a ballot in the wrong precinct, it has to be wholly discarded. and the second said -- had to do with restrictions on who could deliver a ballot to the polling place. it said only family members, close family members and really was more restrictive there. and a lower court said both of these laws had an impact on minorities and struck them down under the voting right act. and today a justice writing about a 6-3 majority, and that's breaking down along ideological lines. he said the laws were okay. and what's really important about it is his reasoning. you heard echoes of what the conservatives have been saying, what president trump is saying. that states have a right to pass laws to combat voting fraud. and so what this means is now the court today has limited the reach of section 2, and it comes as states across the country are passing more and more restrictive laws. so it should have a big impact in the near future. >> yeah. for georgia, to florida, to texas
