he does seem to be taking pages right out of the arizona playbook. in arizona, the republican state senate leader used her subpoena power to force the board of elections to turn over ballots. this pennsylvania state senator also runs a committee that theoretically has subpoena power. in arizona, the state senate fronted $150,000 to pay for their so-called audit. the rest of the funding for it is coming from sources that nobody involved will disclose. this pennsylvania state senator is also trying to secure funding for an audit and has sought advice from a law firm about how to go about using money from a private non-profit organization to pay for vendors, consultants and anyone else. in arizona, all the republicans involved in the so-called audit have been claiming that it's not about overturning the 2020 election. it's about restoring integrity to the state's elections. right on cue in pennsylvania, a law firm tapped by the republican state senator said in a letter that the purpose of such an audit would be to -- hope you are sitting down -- develop

let me put up some of the arizona's great reporting from over the holiday. arizona republican chair kelly ward's pressure campaign with hickman, the gop official who refused to pick up trump's call, began in earnest on november 7th as votes were still being counted. ward complained election observers were unable to see. after hickman pressed for specifics ward responded, quote, we need you to stop the counting. days later on november 13th, she wrote, we want you guys to do the right thing, prove to millions of arizona voters that the maricopa vote is legit. don't try to simply tell us that the recorder and elections department say it's fine. prove it to arizona and to america. you have all the power you need to make it happen. the pressure campaign is clearly coming from the ex-president. i think he bragged about it. i think he flew some of the officials from michigan in, and it really does sort of undergird the point that save for a handful of local election officials, a lot of them republicans, we could have had a very different outcome in november. >> yea

i've been talking about arizona and pennsylvania. but you know this well. this kind of nonsense is actually going on in michigan as well. >> it most unfortunately is. our legislature has been considering legislation for the last few months. there's been efforts to have similar activities to what's going on in arizona. they have not been successful to date. those efforts have been unsuccessful. there has been no evidence of any kind of conspiracy or falsehood. there are definitively just by many of the other states trying to make it harder in this state. i fear that they may be successful before it ends. >> i get the motivations are sinister, the problem i'm seeing is i'm talking to republicans, mainstream normal republicans who i don't think are subject to conspiracy theories who say the goal here is to make voting safer and more accessible. it's the language the arizona republicans are using, it's the language that the law firm representing pennsylvania republicans are using, that this is men to improve and make voting more robust. in michigan, you have a

then came this challenge to arizona's supreme court. the law requires election officials to throw away ballots cast at the wrong precinct. you have two voting areas, two places to vote, you go to the wrong one, vote there, woops, it gets thrown out. it makes it a crime for anyone to collect and deliver ballots to polling places other than family members. we know this had a disparate impact. they found tossing ballots cast in the wrong precinct has the effect of undercounting minority votes by a factor of 2 to 1. allowing someone else to drop off a ballot is particularly important for indigenous communities in arizona. today the supreme court's conservative majority said all of that stuff is fine. i could give you the legal reasoning but here's the real reasoning. they and all other parts of the right are working in tandem against america's multi-racial democracy. now donald trump's version of that is more vulgar, cringe inducing whipping up a mob to go beat up cops and chant hang mike pence and storm the capitol and go marauding to find

let's go to steve patterson standing by in phoenix, arizona. what are you hearing from folks ahead of tonight's rally? >> reporter: well, i've recently heard from a political commentator who essentially said that as long as the former president essentially draws breath and continues public speaking that he sets the tone and the agenda for the republican party. and that is what this event is about, even more than questioning the integrity of our elections in this country, it is an event to pledge to donald trump, especially for people who are running for office across the country. and there are people here running for senate, house, secretary of state, all across -- again, all across the country, here to be in his orbit. in doing so, they are essentially glomming onto this idea that there is widespread voter fraud and the election was somehow stolen from donald trump. nowhere is that more poignant than right here in phoenix with the audit that has been going on more months that has caused 2.4 million votes, and cost taxpayers $150,000 so far and

you mentioned the arizona recall -- recount rather, the voter fraud cases that have been found. according to the associated press as of yesterday, again, more than 3 million votes cast in that state, they found a big total of 182 cases that just warranted looking at, of which four, four, that's it, four were found to have lead to problems and that they brought charges. no one has been convicted, by the way. those kinds of numbers, it doesn't even begin to support these ridiculous and bizarre theories, but you have written about the qanon persistence and how it has been a problem. enough so that dhs is monitoring discussions about these theories online. give me a sense of how great a threat dhs is considering qanon. do you think it is possible to combat this group via dhs in some way? >> well, this is from one of my colleague's reporting, betsy swann. she wrote a few weeks ago that dhs was monitoring it. they didn't have any kind of evidence, anything that was going to happen, but it is just something that is on their radar this summer, especially considering everything that happ

republican congressman paul gosar of arizona, a member of congress who should be far more famous than he is. he writes, it is unjust to sweep ashli's death under the rug. her life mattered. we do not allow the execution of citizens by street justice in our country. babbitt is the 35-year-old woman who attempted to charge into the speaker's lobby where members of congress were present at that moment on january 6th with a violent mob breaking down windows, braying for blood at her back. when rioters broke the windows of these doors right there leading to the lobby, which is right outside the house chamber, ashli babbitt and her alone vaulted through, the first one to go through, though there was a gun drawn and a warning, and she was shot and killed by a capitol officer that you see there on the other side. her death is obviously a horrible tragedy. it never should have happened. she never should have been there. she never should have been in that position. the key question is not who killed her but who is truly culpable for her death and the deaths of three other trump supporters that
