this cites senator warnock of georgia, senator kelly of arizona. it suggests part of this is the anti-trump factor. how about you, how do you read it? >> i read it pretty much the same way. i mean, the map is pretty good. they're having to defend a lot more seats than we are in this cycle, and we have to have a good cycle because the 2024 map is not good at all. so i am somewhat encouraged. we have to hold with new hampshire, and we have to hold arizona and georgia, but we've got real pick up chances in north carolina, pennsylvania, wisconsin, places like that. we've got some real good pickup opportunities. so i'm mildly optimistic. >> okay, but here's the deal. you just said something that i had no intention of asking because i don't really want to think about 2024. but you being who you are, you just said that 2024 doesn't look good. why not? >> well, because we had a big year in '18, so we just have more seats at risk in 2024 than we do in 2022. >> indeed that makes sense in the six-year terms. okay, got it. i thought there was something else i

you mentioned the arizona recall -- recount rather, the voter fraud cases that have been found. according to the associated press as of yesterday, again, more than 3 million votes cast in that state, they found a big total of 182 cases that just warranted looking at, of which four, four, that's it, four were found to have lead to problems and that they brought charges. no one has been convicted, by the way. those kinds of numbers, it doesn't even begin to support these ridiculous and bizarre theories, but you have written about the qanon persistence and how it has been a problem. enough so that dhs is monitoring discussions about these theories online. give me a sense of how great a threat dhs is considering qanon. do you think it is possible to combat this group via dhs in some way? >> well, this is from one of my colleague's reporting, betsy swann. she wrote a few weeks ago that dhs was monitoring it. they didn't have any kind of evidence, anything that was going to happen, but it is just something that is on their radar this summer, especially considering everything that happ

what's the immediate impact in arizona? >> it's negligent. they took away section two of the voting rights act. it makes it difficult to sue, us as u.s. citizens when we feel they are trying to suppress our vote and opportunities. this has been a two decade long approach. they know they are not a majority party anymore. they are largely a regional party and the best thing they can do is try to suppress the votes of the growing american electorate and by getting rid of the voting rights act. e need to bring that back. i worked with a bill that will allow people to defend themselves when the government tries to disenfranchise them. >> congressman, you say that we need focus on the fact that the supreme court decision stripped most of section two. at the same time this will have an impact on voters, particularly minority voters in arizona. yesterday i spoke with the chair and they said they are going door to door in 115 degrees to educate people about these changes. is that education enough? >> there's voting centers. most latinos and young vote

most notably, the preposterous brought it going on in arizona. all of that propaganda has had the intended effect on his target populous. 86% of republicans see by mail increases voter fraud. 79% are not confident in the national vote count. perhaps most alarming is the number at the bottom. 46% of republicans that think state legislatures should override their states popular vote. today, we have an actual example in the news of a colossal election administration screw up in the bluest of blue areas. in the democratic primary in the very democratic city of new york city, involving the mayoral race. you should know, the board of elections in new york city which oversees elections, is one of the most notoriously incompetent election administration units in the country. in 2013, the city's department of investigation released a 72-page report on the board of elections detailing incompetence and misconduct. in 2016, in the midst of the democratic presidential primary between hillary clinton and bernie sanders, a member of the board mistakenly removed

then came this challenge to arizona's supreme court. the law requires election officials to throw away ballots cast at the wrong precinct. you have two voting areas, two places to vote, you go to the wrong one, vote there, woops, it gets thrown out. it makes it a crime for anyone to collect and deliver ballots to polling places other than family members. we know this had a disparate impact. they found tossing ballots cast in the wrong precinct has the effect of undercounting minority votes by a factor of 2 to 1. allowing someone else to drop off a ballot is particularly important for indigenous communities in arizona. today the supreme court's conservative majority said all of that stuff is fine. i could give you the legal reasoning but here's the real reasoning. they and all other parts of the right are working in tandem against america's multi-racial democracy. now donald trump's version of that is more vulgar, cringe inducing whipping up a mob to go beat up cops and chant hang mike pence and storm the capitol and go marauding to find

what are these new revelations from arizona contributed i think about that? >> thank you be with you. happy anniversary, i guess we would say. this is just a crazy moment in american history. we've gone through a storming of the capital. we've gone through an attempt to overturn the results of an election led by the president, and yet we have one political party that is not only in denial but there's also in a position that in order to show fidelity to the parties leader, donald trump, you have to mimic the lie that the election was stolen and you have to push legislation and other rules that are going to make it easier to mess with votes next time. i'm really concerned. and it's really hard to explain. this is different from the concerns about gerrymandering that we talk about all the time. this is worse than voter suppression. where states pass laws that they can't give voters water. this is really about something so basic to a democracy that the vote is going to be fairly counted. you put together what happened in arizona with what happened in georgia, wit

republican governors, texas, georgia, arizona have ordered public universities not to mandate vaccinations. an indiana university announced in the spring it will require all students to be vak si flated. they lobbied the governor to block the move. the president of purdue university, former republican governor of the state last april when the u.s. pandemic was still in its first wave he was announcing they would open in person in fall. mitch daniels announced his university and more than 45,000 students will not require vaccines in the fall. now, i don't know how that's going to turn out. i hope well. maybe people are vaccinated already. again, the principal here is extremely hard to determine. particularly since this defensive private body autonomy is not a watch word among conservative republicans when it comes to the extremely high stakes intimate personal health decision of a woman's pregnancy. it sure seems like the principal is just backlash politics. we perceive that liberals are trying to get you vaccinated, which is not true, so don't take the vaccine. it doesn't have to be this w

this is the first time the supreme court has applied it to changes in voting laws and two in arizona one that said ballots would be thrown out if cast in the wrong precinct and only voters themselves or their family members or caregivers can collect their ballots. the supreme court upheld those both provisions and that's not a surprise and even the biden administration said they probably passed the test. the critical thing is what the court said about what is left of the voting rights act, and this is where the court bitterly divided. so justice alito said that anything connected in voting imposes some kind of restriction. you either have to go to the mailbox to drop off your ballot or go to the polls to drop off your ballot. any time it changes the rules it imposes some restriction. it is not going to be illegal, he said. even if it imposes a minor difference in the way different populations respond to it. the mere fact that there's some disparity in the impact doesn't necessarily mean that the system is not equally open or doesn't give everybody an equal opportunity to vote. that,
