one week ago, 84% of arizona in two highest levels of drought. this week, down to 52%. again, a huge improvement for the state of arizona but what about the rest of the states? the good news, we're starting to seat moisture surge into other areas specifically the pacific northwest which needs it. it's not a lot of rain but a little bit can make a difference. half an inch of rain, that's all you need, to stop the spread of ongoing wildfires. if they can get to two inches that can actually extinguish the fires. and there's a lot in the west. 83 afternoon active fires spread out over 13 states. including washington, idaho, oregon, montana. a lot of those farther north states, 96% of western states are in some level of drought. so, yes, even though not a ton of rain, even a little bit can make a huge difference. it's going forward, when we look at the long-term forecast, a lot of these areas go back to below norm pal precip, the difference is the pacific northwest will they will get a little moisture to help the firefighters out. >> every little bit helps out. allison chinc

last week we saw the supreme court upholding provisions of that arizona gop voting law. how do you think that the supreme court's decision is going to ultimately weigh on the calculus, the political calculation around voting rights moving forward. >> right, i think you'll see this is playing out in the states in much braet greater fashion than here in washington. the supreme court has shown no interest in sort of trying to fortify the voting rights act. they're sort of supporting -- they have decisions that have come down, the recent one in arizona you mentioned, obviously the huge case back eight years ago, the shelby county case where they have chiseled away at the case. and you're not going to see the court doing something and the math is not there in the united states congress. and you mentioned at the top, the biden administration and the vice president meeting behind closed door and meeting with voting rights actives and how passionate the president is about the issue, and he's going to give speeches and we haven't seen that on the schedule yet but president biden

now, next question, earlier this week the supreme court upheld restrictive voting laws in arizona. one viewer wants to know after this ruling is there any realistic way to challenge similar laws in other states? >> there is, but it got harder this week. now, the supreme court this week upheld two restrictive voting laws issued by the state of arizona. this was a 6-3 ruling straight along ideological lines. the six conservative justices, roberts, alito, thomas, kavanaugh, gorsuch and barrett all voted to uphold the restrictive laws. the three liberal justices all dissented. they said they would have struck it down. the challengers here have to show that there's a discriminatory purpose behind the law. the challengers said it impacts minorities more. however, the majority opinion here said, no, that's not enough. the law applies evenly and we don't see enough of an impact, so we will continue to see people, including the justice department who is now sued against the georgia laws. because the hill just got a little steeper in the federal courts and the supreme court has made very cle
