, working in hotels in atlanta. they're the victims of this major league baseball boycott, no one else. >> bill: there were 500,000 people who showed up to vote in georgia who had already requested an absentee ballot. i don't know if you knew that number or not. the secretary of state wrote a piece this week. maligned by republicans and president trump at the time supported by democrats at the time. if you under the old law in georgia were to show up after requesting an absentee ballot you would have to do a signature match which is subjective. does this signature match what's here? the reason why they changed the law and got rid of signature match. they wanted to go to voter i.d. or driver's license to determine what's the number that corresponds to your name so we can nail this down. when you have half a million people showing up to vote who have already requested an absentee ballot in a state that was decided by 11,000 votes, you have to find a way to figure it out. >> logically when that happens there is a risk

you have atlanta mayor keisha lance bottoms signing an order. i mean, that might blunt the impact, i suppose, but how do you make sure that voters are able, equipped to combat these efforts? >> you know, i think that we do need to have education as part of it, which is why our organization and many other organizations on the ground are doing voter education work. we've been engaged. some of the mobilizization didn't just up and happen. that came after people working on the ground, working with communities, working with groups, educating them about the opportunity to vote, educating them about the significance of voting and the impact of their votes. and so they responded to that. the other way is there a we have to safeguard people's right to vote, that we cannot allow legislation that is punitive that, punishes people for participating in the process. that's essentially what is happening. so georgia voters are now under attack, particularly black voters are under attack because they came out in record numbers this last election cycle. and so wh

a month ago, we were watching the horrible images come in from two-mass shootings in and around atlanta. seems a long time ago, doesn't it? the sad fact is, though, that mass shootings have become so common, it may, soon, be hard for one not to fall on the anniversary of another. this is a map of mass shootings in just the last month, which we're defining as four or more people shot, wounded, or killed, excluding the gunman. one other thing to note. there is only room on the map to show a little less than half. the full count, again, over just a single month since the atlanta shootings is 45 and the map is profound as it might be, doesn't do justice to the story. doesn't capture the horror. it doesn't capture the wounds, and the deaths of so many americans. the map doesn't tell the story of the five people, who were shot and wounded on march 17th in stockton, california. or the four shot in oregon, a day later. in houston, on the 20th, five shot at a nightclub. that same day in dallas, eight people shot and one killed in philadelphia. that night someone opened fire at a party, kill one

since atlanta spa killings on march 15, there have been 50 mass shootings in the united states according to analysis according to the gun violence, a kif, local media and police reports. you've long pushed for gun control legislation. we spoke in mid-march. you said because you've failed in the past, that doesn't mean one should not continue and try to if it for change. do you still have optimism tonight? >> i do. listen, the voters did their part. they put in charge of congress majorities that support universal background checks. they put a president in the white house who wants to sign that bill. now it's up to us to deliver. 2013 now, eight years ago, we lost a vote on background checks. and since then, we've been building up political power in the anti-gun violence movement. today we are stronger than the gun lobby. and i think that's part of the reason why i am having, i think, real substantive discussions with several republicans about how we can bring a bill to the senate floor in the next month or two that will dramatically expand the number of gun sales that have to be submitted
