she we are joined now live from atlanta university center. you covered a lot of ground with these students, tell us more about it. you know these students are hopeful but only call your attentionly so. so we heard a lot of reaction to the derek chauvin trial this week, but two things stuck out to me. this was a defining moment, the protests that many of them took part in. it has ticken up a lot of ground. the other thing is they they are really a coming of asian they are based on the deaths of michael brown, just kind of playing out as they were becoming tarms and going through adolescence. they say it has had a big impact on them. >> how many of you were surprised by the verdict? so all of you were surprised in some way? how many of you were relieved. >> it is hard for us to say that i feel relieved because then i have to gear up for something else that i have to champion. >> when our professor said guilty, there was like a weird backlash and reaction from some people, some political figures, some people in the news, and that celebration kin

if i think about the hospitality industry, i was talking with three restaurant owners here in atlanta just last week who are struggling to find workers as business is coming back online. and we had a lot of conversations about how important it is to train managers. the owners of restaurants, large hospitality companies, no matter how noble the ceo, they are not in those units every day. they're not hiring, they're not coaching, they're not addressing or promoting. so putting the effort on training frontline managers who can do a phenomenal job of attracting, retaining and developing women from within, that is a secret sauce to some of these policies having an impact on the frontline level. >> alex carder, i'm going to go to you but you can take a question to deens, it might be the same one. what is your advice to women right now in terms of approaching getting back in, but they still have a home that is literally defending upon them with kids, the potential positive work remote, the issues of starting all over again when they were completely displaced, which is traumatic? >> you know,

so our partner with the pharmacy in the west end, the rougher part of atlanta and we're out there, going to make it happen for people to get the vaccine right in their neighborhoods so it's very easy. >> now, we talked a lot -- go ahead. >> it has been more difficult for blacks to get the vaccine because people are not doing what damon does. initially only the physicians and medical providers could get it, then the older people. a lot of people did get left behind. >> we talked a lot about the importance of regular testing and the lead up to the commitment march with the vaccine rolling out now. what is the importance of continued testing and other mitigation strategies? >> it is just as important now as it was before. this disease is still killing people and still killing black people in disproportionate numbers than others. it's just as important to wear your mask, just as important to get tested. the vaccine will keep you from getting severe illness or death in most cases, but it doesn't mean you cannot contract the disease nor pass this disease on, so we still need to know whether yo

images and these devastating murders of unarmed black americans and also what recently happened in atlanta, an instance of white supremacy and misogyny against the aapi community. this recovery needs to be one that is trauma informed and we need to make sure there are resources that people can get help that they need, eliminate those barriers and i'm calling for my children act to be a framework within that. in that this is black maternal health week, we are sitting in the disparate health outcomes and the racial injustices, this is another issue. my grandmother died in the 1950s in child birth and the fact that right now in 2021 that black women could still be four times more likely to die in child birth or in birthing complications is simply unacceptable and those concerns and those realities have only worsened under the pandemic which is why i've introduced the covid-19 safe birthing act to ensure that there are those protections because ensuring a safe pregnancy should be a fundamental human right and not a privilege. >> as i listen to you talk, part of what i am struck by is that we a

some of those shootings included the killings at three atlanta-area spas, where six of the slain were asian women. a community that's faced an alarming spike in hate incidents, since the pandemic took hold and the president slapped the racist brand name on it. less than a week after that at a supermarket in boulder, a shooter armed with a military-style semiautomatic rifle took the lives of ten people. and about a week after that, the gunman opened fire at a california real estate office, killing four people, including a 9-year-old boy. this country is at a breaking point, folks. it's just a breaking point. partially, because of our refusal to reconcile our violent, racist past. a pursuit the reverend dr. martin luther king jr. died for. years before his assassination, he penned on this day, a letter from jail. included in the letter, were these words. for years now, i have heard the word, wait! it rings in the ear of every negro with piercing familiarity. this "wait" has almost always meant never. this is a moment, when we, as a nation, have to take a hard look at who we are. who we
