let's get the news from steve harrigan live for us in atlanta this morning. steve. >> harris, more and even sharper criticism from president joe biden about georgia's new election law referring to it once again as a jim crow law. biden saying he would support any corporation's moves to protest that law and however form they deem fit. biden also telling georgia that georgia needs to smarten up. here is the president. >> president biden: they need to deal with this. georgia and other states to smarten up, stop it, stop it. it is not -- >> republican governor brian kemp continues to bristle at charges this is a new jim crow law. he said the state had to do something after the number of absentee voters tripled in the last election. here is governor kemp. >> doing the voter i.d. on absent east will make it more efficient for them. speed up the process and also brings another level of security. so who would be against that? how is that jim crow 2.0? >> former major league baseball commissioner saying baseball's decision to move the all-star game out of georgia was

major league baseball has moved its all-star game from atlanta to colorado. to the critics point to hypocrisy saying colorado has an even more restrictive voting law

the atlanta mayor is also speaking out against the law today. we've got both aspects covered by nbc's deepa who's covering from atlanta. let's talk about what we heard from mayor keisha lance bottoms who also spoke about this earlier today. >> reporter: you're hearing from democratic and republican leaders about this very kofrl voting bill that was passed by the governor just a little over a week ago, one that really does restrict voting measures in this state, making it really difficult, particularly in the suburbs of this atlanta region, right, communities of color, largely black voters, asian voters, folks who are, you know, turning out in record numbers in this last election like we saw, especially in that special election earlier this year. now harder, essentially, to cast a ballot going forward, and what you're seeing is democratic lawmakers speaking out and kind of saying, you know, this is going to have financial impacts for the state as well and that's something we're already seeing with major league baseball pulling its all-star game o

atlanta is 51% african-american. they moved it to denver, a city that is 9% african-american because they are such woke social justice warriors that they are going to take $100 million out of the pockets of the african-american small businesses and workers in atlanta. it makes no sense. it's dangerous and i do think there is a strong backlash that is building because the american people, when you go to a baseball game, you are not interested in their lecturing you on left wing politics. you would like to see people play a game of baseball. >> ben: the thing that i'm concerned about, senator, we have these handful of institutions that still unite us in american life. and we see them being torn apart by this woke leftism which is taking over all of these different entities that had been unifying elements of american life that we could all go to a baseball game together and cheer alongside each other regardless of race of religion, et cetera. to me, this is something that has to be solved from the bottom up, from the co

the city with only 9% black population compared to 51% in atlanta. georgia governor brian kemp joins us now. great to have you here today. seem to be the man of the hour, a busy one. do you believe major league baseball will live to regret that decision? >> i think they will. it's almost comical, all of these that keep falling and moving the all-star game from the cities and at 60% african-american to an metro area that is less than 10%, they have less of early voting days. they have a photo i.d. requirement, for in person voting. it's insane. we compared to where major league baseball is headquartered in new york, and i've talked to that issue at nausea them really about the discrepancies and how they are boycotting and pulling games out of the state like ours. yet they are headquartered in the state that's more restrictive than they are. it doesn't add up. and, there's a couple of provisions in this bill that are, with this i.d. if we can't hand out food or water and if you do it then you can't announce who you are and can't have any labeling. then

what's your view of mlb pulling the all-star game from atlanta? >> i think that is the kind of thing to expect to see when you actually create legislation that restricts or reduces the potential for people to vote opposed to expanding. this -- you know, the governor said, also, there were no issues with the election on january 5th or in november when the presidential election took place. but all of a sudden we have to put restrictions in place that limit the ability for people to vote and then you may even say if people happen to give individuals water for standing in line for long periods of time that that's illegal. there's something draconian and seriously wrong with what we are seeing. >> yeah. i think there's a lot that agree with that and including two black executives who called on companies to directly oppose the new georgia laws and some americans like american airlines, dell, delta, coca-cola put out statements for the first time i might add. do you think that public pressure played a role here. how much does it help after the law has pa

you've got keisha bottoms, the mayor of atlanta, who is also saying she's disappointed about it. and it is a lot of money. but again, past the money, you've got to figure this is looking through the political prizm, whether it's for business or politicians but they've got to get the story right, as kat mentioned. it's not us, it's the washington post that pointed out that people are looking at old versions of the bill and not looking at the final version and some of the details which in some cases, not all, but some cases expand voter rights. howie: yeah, media have to be careful jumping on the bandwagon to get the facts right. let me move to the pandemic. the media rhetoric heated up after the cdc chief said she was scared. >> i'm going to lose the script. i'm going to reflect on the recurring feeling i have of impending doom. howie: donald trump's former medical advisors appeared in a documentary and deborah birx described a tense call from the president. >> were you threatened? >> i would say it was a very uncomfortable conversation. he felt very strongly that i misrepresented

one, this is not a new dynamic in atlanta. atlanta is the home of the late hank aaron who we lost in january who if this track record is any indication would have had something to say about this voting law and it's not only the process it went through in the legislature but also the passage. he would have spoken out against that. so baseball is the sport where jackie robinson broke the color barrier. baseball is proud of that. atlanta is proud of being the city too busy to hate and there is a real question here as to whether or not the city is going to live up to that moniker now. companies like delta and coca-cola have long been part of what has made -- given atlanta that reputation, that made atlanta and georgia a place that's been able to point to southern neighbors and say we are not south carolina, we are not alabama. we are not mississippi. and now i think the confluence of atlanta and baseball given their kind of -- what they hold -- both of them holding themselves out to be markers of racial progress that confluence ha

the lawmaker behind the new executive order mayor of atlanta, keisha lance bottoms. mayor, thank you for being here. what exactly do you want to accomplish with this executive order? the law has already passed. >> well, thank you for having me. and what we want to accomplish is the 1.2 million customers in the metro atlanta area, what this new law means. how they can get the appropriate i.d., the new rules related to absentee ballots. we want our customers to be informed. so ambassador young tells a great story. one day of voting when he first ran for congress and 74% turnout in the african-american community. so even though there may be barriers, we can still overcome those barriers and we want to make sure our customers are informed so they need to know what to do to cast their ballot when the time comes. >> we have heard a lot about no food or water in line, but beyond those headlines what is the most dangerous part of this bill? >> the most dangerous part of this bill, in my opinion, is the dialing back or giving to the state legislature control over the election
