and we heard yesterday ben cardin on a hot mic at an event with pete buttigieg, transportation secretary. he said that it's going to be one party only. it's going to be on a reconciliation package. and just the administration should be ready for that possibility, ready for that reality. so, i think -- listen, i'm looking at july 4th as a probable timeline, a probable deadline for this infrastructure package. but there's just going to be a lot of haggling between now and then. and there are people that are even skeptical that this will get done at all. and you and i, kasie, have lived through many iterations, not only in the trump administration, but also in the obama administration. infrastructure is bipartisan in the sense that both parties recognize that infrastructure is needed and needs to be updated. it's not bipartisan in the solutions that are proposed or the ways to pay for it or the contours of the bill like this. >> yeah, no, for sure. real quick, jake, what do you got coming up in "punch bowl a.m." today, anything good? >> yeah, we have a big talk about immigration. my colleag

joining me now is transportation secretary pete buttigieg. thanks for joining us. the republicans want to keep infrastructure and any packages limited to roads and bridges, not interested in a green new deal as the committee chairman put it. which is more important to the biden administration, getting the proposal president biden wants in its entirety or getting legislation that's likely more modest burr bipartisan with republican support because it does not seem like you're going to be able to get both? >> well, i think that there's a tremendous opportunity to have a big bold package. i'm seeing it in the conversations with democrats and republicans on the hill and definitely in conversations that i'm having with people across the country. americans don't new zealand a lot of selling to know that we've got to do big things when it comes to our infrastructure, and the truth is you can't separate the climate part from this vision because every road we fix, every bridge we build, we can either do it in a way that's better for the climate or worse for the climate. why

buttigieg talking about taxing the number of miles people drive. it i a -- appears that might not be the case. stuart: i'm sure you watched last week's press conference, thursday, with the president. how long do you think you'll have to wait to get another press conference with the president? >> oh, i think it'll be a long time. they are very clear in their preference not to have him in this format, also not to have him in the format of a long address, like a joint address to congress which he hasn't done. they keep him as a sound bite president. i think there was a lot of pressure put on him to do that one. i venture to say it'll probably be another hundred days or at least until the media drum beat pipes up and says we need another before we'll see him in that format again. stuart: what do you think? the problem with biden is he doesn't look robust. that's the problem, isn't it? >> i think that's a big part of the problem. i also think he tends to step in it, and he's not good when pressed on follow-up about transparency at the border. i mean, he

first, we're joined by the transportation secretary, pete buttigieg. thanks for being here. good to have you here. >> thanks for having me. >> martha: big picture, jobs, the covid relief bill is very important to you. what do you say to those that $1.9 trillion is larger than any relief package by itself than we've ever had in this country and still have a trillion designated but not spent year and things are turning around. why not wait and see how it goes? >> the reason that the risk of not doing enough is so much worse than the possibility of acting too quickly or doing too much. it's true. we have not had a rescue package like this because we have not had a crisis like this. fantastic news more vaccines are on the way. that's why we have to pass this bill. we have to make sure that we get the sites up, get the shots in people's arms -- >> martha: people say 10% deals with that. a lot of it deals with education that doesn't kick in to 2022. what is that doing in a covid relief bill? >> one of the most important things in covid is to get schools open safely. >> martha: we

buttigieg that a budget reconciliation would likely be needed to pass the infrastructure bill. take a look. >> certain parts of it, ultimately when we put together similar to how you -- [ indiscernible ] jackie: and joining me now, americans for tax reform president, grover norquist. grover, good morning to you. you just saw that exchange. and i do want to highlight before we get into it that the coronavirus relief package, the 1.9 trillion that was just passed that really didn't have anything to do with the coronavirus, which is what they used budget reconciliation for, they're now calling it the america rescue plan. did america need to be rescued? and do we need more bills like this going forward? >> no, and of course they call it covid because it was about everything else. it was about spending $2 trillion. there's a law in there that says that states can't cut taxes for four years. not sure that's constitutional. but that's in it. okay. so it is a left wing political wish list. they brought back earmarks which are the corrupt process of where a congressman delegates, i want

buttigieg. this is the next big thing the white house is going to begin to push. legislation that they are hoping not only contains things related to roads and bridges, but also on larger issues including climate change things like building electric vehicle charging stations, or developing cleaner cars. they are trying to get democrats and republicans to agree on language. that might be difficult depending how much democrats want to push forward with climate change initiatives. at this point, you can see that president biden is once again trying to bring republicans on board with the process, similar to how he did at the beginning of this current stimulus package. shery: bloomberg government reporter emily wilkins joining us from washington. let's focus on one of those hardest hit sectors that really need the stimulus package, airlines. bloomberg intelligence is expecting u.s. airlines to tap up to $14 billion from the relief bill, giving them enough liquidity throughout the year. george ferguso
