Previously, preliminary data on the ability of a group of common indoor plants to remove organic chemical from indoor air was presented. The group of plants chosen for this study was determined by joint agreement between NASA and the Associated Landscape Contractors of America. The chemicals chosen for study were benzene, trichloroethylene, and formaldehyde. The results show that plants can play a major role in removal of organic chemicals from indoor air.

Transformation of data into knowledge through conceptual induction has been the focus of our research described in this paper. We have developed a Machine Learning System (MLS) to analyze the rocket engine simulation data. MLS can provide to its users fault analysis, characteristics, and conceptual descriptions of faults, and the relationships of attributes and sensors. All the results are critically important in identifying faults.

Outgassing data, derived from tests at 398 K (125 C) for 24 hours in a vacuum as per ASTM E 595-84, have been compiled for numerous materials for spacecraft use. The data presented are the total mass loss (TML) and the collected volatile condensable materials (CVCM). The various materials are compiled by likely usage and alphabetically.

In the opening weeks of 1998 a news article in the British journal Nature reported that NASA was about to enter biology in a big way. A ''virtual'' Astrobiology Institute was gearing up for business, and NASA administrator Dan Goldin told his external advisory council that he would like to see spending on the new institute eventually reach 100 million per year. ''You just wait for the screaming from the physical scientists (when that happens),'' Goldin was quoted as saying. Nevertheless, by the...

The AIAA/NASA Conference on Intelligent Robotics in Field, Factory, Service, and Space (CIRFFSS '94) was originally proposed because of the strong belief that America's problems of global economic competitiveness and job creation and preservations can partly be solved by the use of intelligent robotics, which are also required for human space exploration missions. Individual sessions addressed the following topics: (1) vision systems integration and architecture; (2) selective perception and...

The physicomechanical aspects of the emergence of the planets are discussed, based on the concept of accretion from solid bodies and particles which, together with the gases, made up the protoplanetary cloud enveloping the sun in the early phases of its development. The idea of accretion was extensively developed in Shmidt's theory and later in the physicochemical studies of meteorites carried out by Urey and others. The evolution of the gas-dust protoplanetary cloud and the formation of a...

In August 1997, NASA sponsored a 3-day workshop to assess the prospects emerging from physics that may eventually lead to creating propulsion breakthroughs -the kind of breakthroughs that could revolutionize space flight and enable human voyages to other star systems. Experiments and theories were discussed regarding the coupling of gravity and electromagnetism, vacuum fluctuation energy, warp drives and wormholes, and superluminal quantum tunneling. Because the propulsion goals are presumably...

In this paper we present the results from an extensive comparison study of three R-tree packing algorithms, including a new easy to implement algorithm. The algorithms are evaluated using both synthetic and actual data from various application domains including VLSI design, GIS (tiger), and computational fluid dynamics. Our studies also consider the impact that various degrees of buffering have on query performance. Experimental results indicate that none of the algorithms is best for all types...

A computer code base on an improved vortex filament/vortex core method for predicting aerodynamic characteristics of slender wings with edge vortex separations is developed. The code is applicable to camber wings, straked wings or wings with leading edge vortex flaps at subsonic speeds. The prediction of lifting pressure distribution and the computer time are improved by using a pair of concentrated vortex cores above the wing surface. The main features of this computer program are: (1)...

The Bonner Durchmusterung (BD) is a visual survey of stars in the declination zones 89 deg to -01 deg. This volume contains the data for the declination range 89 deg to 30 deg. The survey, completed by Argelander and his assistants in the years 1852-1861, was performed and the stars cataloged by allowing the telescope to drift along the mean declination of each zone and recording the positions and magnitudes of stars crossing the transit line of each field. The goal of the survey was to obtain...

Missions to many classes of planetary bodies - asteroids Trojans TNOs dwarf planets - can offer enhanced science return if they target binary or multiple systems.
Near Earth objects (NEOs) are attractive targets for spacecraft missions with the purpose of obtaining greater insight to the nature of the original bodies from which the terrestrial planets formed, without having to visit the Main Belt itself. Greater knowledge of NEOs directly sheds light on the origin and evolution of the asteroid belt, the formation of planets, and the history of the solar system. This report describes a search for NEOs that would be accessible for missions launching in...

This book presents recent developments in the theory of gearing and the modifications in gear geometry necessary to improve the conditions of meshing. Highlighted are low-noise gear drives that have a stable contact during meshing and a predesigned parabolic transmission error function that can handle misalignment during operation without sacrificing the low-noise aspects of operation. This book also provides a comprehensive history of the development of the theory of gearing through...

A comprehensive description of user problem definition for the PAN AIR (Panel Aerodynamics) system is given. The PAN AIR system solves the three dimensional linear integral equations of subsonic and supersonic flow. Influence coefficient methods are used which employ source and doublet panels as boundary surfaces. Both analysis and design boundary conditions can be used. The information needed to use the PAN AIR system is described. The structure and organization of PAN AIR are described,...

The purpose of the Mars 2018 Sky Crane Capabilities Study was to "explore the full range of science capabilities that could be delivered to the surface of Mars in 2018 by an MSL-derived Sky Crane EDL system" [1]. NASA commissioned the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) to perform this study. The Planetary Science Decadal Survey Mars Panel was particularly interested in the following science pathways: a surface field geology/astrobiology pathway, a subsurface geology/astrobiology pathway...

System diagnosis is an integral part of any Integrated System Health Management application. Diagnostic applications make use of system information from the design phase, such as safety and mission assurance analysis, failure modes and effects analysis, hazards analysis, functional models, fault propagation models, and testability analysis. In modern process control and equipment monitoring systems, topological and analytic , models of the nominal system, derived from design documents, are also...

Almost every year there is at least one technological disaster that highlights the challenge of managing technological risk. On February 1, 2003, the space shuttle Columbia and her crew were lost during reentry into the atmosphere. In the summer of 2003, there was a blackout that left millions of people in the northeast United States without electricity. Forensic analyses, congressional hearings, investigations by scientific boards and panels, and journalistic and academic research have yielded...

The National Academy of Science's Decadal Survey (New Frontiers in the Solar System: An Integrated Exploration Strategy, 2003) recommended that NASA develop a medium-class mission to return a comet surface sample to Earth for laboratory analysis. NASA tasked the Applied Physics Laboratory to refine the concepts described in the Decadal Survey. As stated in the task guidelines: The study results will include a pre-phase A fidelity plan to implement the mission concept, evaluating the cost,...

A novel way of controlling flow separation is reported. The approach involves using an adaptive airfoil geometry that changes its leading edge shape to adjust to the instantaneous flow at high angles of attack such that the flow over it remains attached. In particular, a baseline NACA 0012 airfoil, whose leading edge curvature could be changed dynamically by 400% was tested under quasi-steady compressible flow conditions. A mechanical drive system was used to produce a rounded leading edge to...

The objective of this research is to design an intelligent plug-n-play avionics system that provides a reconfigurable platform for supporting the guidance, navigation and control (GN&C) requirements for different elements of the space exploration mission. The focus of this study is to look at the specific requirements for a spacecraft that needs to go from earth to moon and back. In this regard we will identify the different GN&C problems in various phases of flight that need to be...
