Students at Rush Creek Elementary school had a good reason to look down Monday morning. "Be kind" and other uplifting messages were the first thing students saw on the sidewalk as they made their way to the front door. "I like the smiley face ones that said make someone smile today," said student Sophia Linddlom. "It just made me feel better when I walked in to school," said Angeline Klitz. On Sunday, several parents wrote the chalk messages as part of the "Kindness in Chalk" campaign. Nicki Brunner came up with the idea three years ago, while dropping her oldest child off to school for the very first time. "I just want them to feel loved when they're at their school," she said. The campaign is aimed at preventing bullying. "People close to me have experienced this and I can see the impacts that it has on children through adulthood," said Brunner. Brunner posted on Facebook and other media sites and it took off. She was excited to see the reaction from students at Rush Creek Elementary. She also wants students to know that while bullying exists, they can be the change and make a difference. "It's just bringing the aura, the feeling up. Hopefully not just for the day, or the week, maybe it will impact someone for longer," said Brunner. Students at Basswood Elementary also participated in "Kindness in Chalk Day." The event runs in October, which is National Bullying Awareness Month.
