merritt on grand avenue. it happened around 3 30 this afternoon. investigators say the victim had his own car broke it into before he tried to stop another auto burglary in progress. this suspected burglar shot the victim before taking off. crime stoppers had the oakland police department already are offering a $10,000 reward for any information that leads to an arrest here if you can help out put in a call to the oakland police department. that number is 5123838. to 1, and today's shooting comes as oakland police staffed extra officers this weekend to address the city's increase in violent crime. several tactical teams were brought in to support patrol officers who've been responding to armed caravans, illegal side shows and other violent crimes. those tactical teams focus on de escalation, using less lethal options alongside the department's emergency rescue vehicles. new at 11, police and antioxidant

officers arrested a 13 year old boy who was driving a vehicle stolen in a car jacking. police said that boy led officers on a chase after he was spotted driving on l street near sycamore drive just before three this morning. police say he ultimately crashed in the starbucks parking lot in oakley and was arrested after he was found hiding in the neighborhood. also new tonight. police in anti aka investigating a smash and grab robbery. this happened at a walgreens store on deer valley road and hillcrest avenue at about 8 30 last night. police say a woman and three men wearing hoodies and masks used hammers to smash open locked plexiglass cases in the cosmetic section. an estimated $2400 worth of merchandise was stolen here. no one has been arrested. anyone with information should call andy oct. police three people who were arrested for robbing the nordstrom store in walnut creek earlier this month, are now scheduled to appear in court tomorrow. 30 year old dana dawson, 32 year old joshua underwood and 19 year old rodney

robinson are set to be arraigned on charges including robbery, burglary, organized retail theft. conspiracy and receiving stolen property. the three suspects were among dozens of people who stormed that department store on the evening of november. 20th several nordstrom employees were pepper sprayed, punched and kicked. the search continues tonight for dozens of other people who were involved in similar smash and grab break ins across the bay area. recently at least nine people are facing felony charges following those organized thefts that we saw at stores in san francisco's union square, and governor newsom is promising state resources to help local law enforcement. deal with this problem. we need to investigate these crimes. we need to break up these crime rinks, and we need to make an example out of these folks. along with san francisco. there have been similar smash and grab break ins in downtown walnut creek, hayward, southland mall, santana row in san jose and several

oakland cannabis dispensaries among number of area businesses all those crimes happening within just the past two weeks. new details now on the friday night smash and grab at a home depot store in the southern california city of lakewood. police say they arrested four suspects in connection with the flash mob burglary of that home depot store. beverly hills police spotted the suspect car with front end damage early yesterday morning and pulled it over. police say they found brand new tools, including sledgehammers and crowbars inside the car, possibly stolen from the home depot. the four men were arrested and booked on conspiracy to commit burglary. and will be in court to face their charges. this week, at least four more suspects in the home depot burglary are still at large, turning now to a story getting international attention and new and highly contagious strain of the coronavirus has hit north america canada confirmed tonight two cases of the omicron variant the governor of ontario, the government of ontario says to people in ottawa

speeding through the bay bridge toll plaza shortly after four this afternoon, an officer is seen running to get out of the way. the driver of that flatbed truck passes through the toll booths and crashes into a patrol car. the chp says the driver also collided into two other cars before coming to a stop. the flatbed truck was initially parked in the lanes east of the bay bridge. officers say the driver was told to move but was not cooperating. he was arrested on several felony charges. the chp also says an officer was injured while taking that man into custody. several bay area communities how the menorah lighting ceremony to mark the first night of hanukkah ktvu. zach sauce was in alameda. tonight were hundreds of people gathered to celebrate the start of the jewish holiday. happy tanaka, rabbi meir smart kin lighting what may just be the most unique menorah in the bay area this year. the nine ft tall lego menorah built by local children, proudly lit sunday evening in alameda to mark the first day of hanukkah. we're so

are some preliminary numbers on the big shopping weekend traffic at retail stores on black friday was up 47% compared with 2020, but down 28% compared with 2019 levels and tomorrow cyber monday should be big. as fox news. alexandria hof shows us more and more people are doing most of their spending online. black friday isn't the king. it used to be for retailers. it's not even really just a day anymore, with sales starting in store and online weeks earlier, while black friday foot traffic was down, compared with pre pandemic levels, it was up from last year, perhaps signaling some brick and mortar nostalgia after nearly two years of shopping, online online sales actually fell for the first time friday, according to adobe analytics. retailers racked up $8.9 billion in cyber sales this year. compared with nine billion on the same day in 2020. people were worried about supplies in the last two months, and we saw it big jump in retail sales that came earlier than a lot of people expected. a major test comes tomorrow in order to break this cyber monday. record set in

of blue light surfers slicing through neon swells. wow and children splashing in flashing puddles along the shore. the light is coming from inside the surf itself, courtesy of billions of microorganisms, a phenomenon known as bioluminescence. bioluminescence is when living organisms produce light, so they have the chemistry within. their cells, our bodies to have a chemical reaction that involves release of energy comes out as light that we can see the single celled plankton called dina flag relates. released that energy when excited by wave action or even a passing swimmer, but the light that's just beautiful to us is much more meaningful to them. the purpose of the light can be for attracting prey or searching out prey like a flashlight. or attracting mates or defending against predators,

bioluminescence or signaling by light is a really effective way of communicating. of course, in shallow waters like along the coast. it's something that occurs at night. this luminous display is actually a form of red tide a bloom of algae that in extreme cases can foul coastlines and irritate your eyes and your skin. such blooms can be fueled by nutrient rich runoff after a period of heavy rain, the glowing waves are usually a fairly localized spectacle. but can be seen on beaches around the world. we can't predict when it will occur or how long it will last. but there are places in the world where the bioluminescence is consistent throughout the year. there are several places in the caribbean called bioluminescent bays, where you can go as a tourist and go kayaking at night and experience bioluminescence and as someone who's experienced this natural wonder first hand. it is a memory that will stay with you long after the waves have calmed. and the light is
