traveling through here. 13 as well. up in fairfield. so taking your time as you're traveling and we're looking at our future cast. how long is this weather going to stay wet. well, it's going to rain this morning in the afternoon we'll get a break. they'll be another system, a weak one that comes into the north bay and that will be later this evening into the early morning hours ear and then we'll get a break wednesday thursday, a dry day for us. rain totals. just trace amounts all throughout the east bay and along the peninsula as well. let's get a look at current temperatures yesterday were all of the 40's. a little warmer this morning in the 50's here, valais hill conquer hayward san carlos. we'll have a look at your 7 day coming up. but for now we'll send it back to you. >> you know, i'm loving it a little bit of rain because that means it's not biting cold as we saw yesterday looks like you know, a lot of people still off, though, the majority of people i would imagine because usually we will see bumper to bumper at the bay bridge. no problems. if you're crossing that span
and down on to fremont street in san francisco. no accidents to report on the bay bridge from there. let's go to the san mateo bridge. look at that. it's picked up in volume, especially on the right side of your screen. that's the commute direction from the east bay across that span on to one o one but no accidents there as well from there. let's go to the richmond. sandra fell bridge holding steady meeting. it's still relatively light a little bit of slick conditions as you can clearly see highlighted by the headlights. but you're looking at about 10 12 minutes to cross that span into marion county. and then the golden gate bridge the fog was their briefly, but it's gone away in right now. it looks like, but only one set of headlights coming into san francisco. i did see a fender on northbound 6.80, through walnut creek. so keep that in mind. that's where ag ignacio road is happening right there. so keep that in mind that nothing major across the bay area. what is major covid
cases. it continues to wreak havoc across the country and right here in the bay area and the icu beds. well, they're shrinking in fact, in napa county officials are reporting that there are no icu beds currently available in that county. the rapid rise in cases is straining the healthcare system infectious disease expert doctor john swartzberg acknowledges napa county's hospital system is smaller than most of the bay area bay area. he says the lack of beds because of the surge in omicron variant could be a red flag however, for the rest of the bay area. >> if you've got plenty of icu beds open. even if you've got plenty of ventilators, if you don't have health care workers to take care of the patients in those beds. you know, care for them. the number of adss are getting taken up by patients with covid because the number cases of covid are just skyrocketing. >> okay. so studies showing that the variant is highly
transmissible. and as the cases continue to climb health experts. they continue to urge people to mask up to get vaccinated to get boosted because it's wreaking havoc at the hospitals. it's also wreaking havoc at the universities. a covid outbreak among students. in fact, at stanford university. the school says more than 100 students testing positive for the past few days. kron 4. sarah stinson is live on campus with the details. sarah, what are they doing to make sure everybody is safe. >> well, they're definitely having people quarantine in student housing who have tested positive were talking about 136 stanford students testing positive within the last week. this is a. >> post travel post holiday outbreak here at stanford as students return for the winter quarter. now, i haven't got information just in terms of hospitalizations here so that something will be kind of trying to. >> track down this morning. but we know that this outbreak
has caused a 7.7% positivity rate in the last 7 days. staff has a much lower positivity rate at 2.8% in the last 7 days. the state's seven-day positivity rate, much, much higher. so this is relatively low, but for and university. this is not their largest outbreak at stanford but certainly not their small us as well. class is here began yesterday all online because they were concerned that this may happen with omicron spreading that will continue for the first 2 weeks of winter quarter. students will resume in-person classes. the tuesday after martin luther king junior day on january 18th students will be asked to take a covid-19 test before going back to campus. stanford is strongly encouraging students to get a covid booster before returning to campus because guess what, it is required. they have to show proof of show of getting a booster by january 31st in less. they have an improved
exemption. and so they expect all the students will be boosted up. there will be protected in terms of getting those more intense illnesses from this omicron variant that is spreading so rapidly and so this morning we're not only tracking the latest with this outbreak, but also we want to know more about hospitalizations. we are here at stanford hospital. so a lot more to learn about this. we do know stanford very good about testing. they require testing for staff for athletes and for students. so that is why we have such clear numbers as to how many students have tested positive since december. 27th. >> well, yeah, this is not going anywhere. we do know that a lot of uc schools, they're going back to online learning. thank you so much, sarah, for that report. new cdc guidelines could change requirements yet again for people heading back to work or school. the expectations from the secretary of education is that students we'll still be able to return to in-person
learning even as thousands of schools across the country that they are choosing to go distance, learning others. they plan to use a test to return policy. this comes as there is now more confusion over quarantine recommendations for example, last week, the cdc they lower the isolation. time for asymptomatic infections from 10 days down to 5 days and said those to contract covid do not have to test again after isolating. now, there are new reports that the agency may revise those guidelines once again. >> we opted not to have the rapid tests for isolation we actually don't know how a rapid test performed and how well they predict whether your transmissible during the end of disease. i myself feel that that's a reasonable thing to do. >> i believe that the cdc soon we'll be coming out with more clarification of that since it obviously has generated a number of questions about at
that five-day period should you or should you not be testing. people. >> meantime, the biden administration says the definition of fully vaccinated may soon to include not just your first couple of rounds of vaccinations. but your booster shot this morning, we are hearing from local infectious disease experts about the fda's decision to authorize a 3rd dose of the pfizer vaccine for kids between 1215 years old. we first broke the story yesterday morning on the kron 00:00am morning news. the decision was made after researchers in israel. well, they found no new cases of heart inflammation a condition us experts had been monitoring has a rare side effect. the agency is also monitoring or shortening the wait time for boosters. they were talking about remember 6 months after your first round of vaccines. now they're saying it's down to 5 months. >> with pediatric hospitalizations op it makes sense to try and protect as
many people as possible if not people get infected at the same time. a lot of we're seeing in unity what you're going to see is that we'll get reprieve because it's like having a giant force field. >> the fda also authorizing a 3rd shot for children between 5.11 years old who have weak immune systems. the cdc could make a final decision sometime this week. happening today, san mateo county will be open a booster and covid vaccine clinic for people 12 years and older will take place at the san mateo county event center starting at noon and it will be open tuesdays through saturdays i've covered that story just go to their web site because the times change from day to day. happening today. the west contra costa county unified school district is opening 3 new testing sites for students and staff. the district says it's already given out about 15,000 testing kits to students and their families. but school officials say the drive-thru pickup stations for tests. it's just
only one step that they're taking to make sure that the kids are safe and the staff are safe and trying to slow down cold covid spreading throughout the community. they're planning to take more steps. you can find out all of those locations for the new testing sites on our website at kron 4 dot com. covid testing remains limited. however, throughout the bay area. kron 4 taylor reports that in san francisco testing apartments are quickly filling up and city leaders are blaming a lack of supply. >> available covid testing appointments are few and far between in san francisco as families scramble to get tested after the holidays. well, it's not required. all students are also encouraged to get tested before returning to school. however, judging by comments online and e-mails. we've received some still were unable to find available testing options in time when trying to schedule an appointment online through the city's website. you'll even be greeted by this message saying the city is experiencing high demand city supervisor asha
says the issue isn't the number of testing sites open. but instead a shortage in the supply chain. we have a lot of really good accessibility. >> the problem is the infrastructure, the actual tests themselves. it's a supply chain thing that has caused some delays. suffice says the shortage in testing kits has for several city testing sites to stop taking walk ins over the last few days in some places where there's walk-ups and appointments available or no appointments available or they basically reached passing fad to turn people away. i think there's been a major surge in the amount of people that need testing and so it's put a strain on the system overall. as for those who have been able to get tested through a walk-in appointment. many also had to test their patients, you know, had a number of people call in the said they had to wait in line for about an hour over in the bayview fred, a testing site there. that's where i went last week i went to the baby opera house
after going to a couple locations that either had reached capacity. and i think that's that's essentially where we're suffice as the city is waiting to receive test kits from the state to distribute a public school students staff and families. but expects to have been at some point later this week. >> in the meantime, as we wait for more tests become available going back to the basics wearing a mask socially distancing getting vaccinated and boosted will be important to prevent a continued surge and taylor reporting kron 4 news. >> okay. so let's stay in san francisco. and if you need public transportation, you turned immunity. you could be waiting a little bit longer for your bus train this morning. muni tweeting out that they are experiencing a high level of omicron cases and because of that staff has been forced to stay home and working quarantine. so they have to work from home. they can't be out there driving the handling the trains. and that means that fewer people wait times could be longer. i want
