>> from the bay area's news station. you're watching kron. 4 news at all. >> and tonight at 5 on the last day of 2021 the first lady of television has died just weeks before her one 100th birthday. the world is saying goodbye and honoring the life of betty white, thank you for joining us on kron 4 news at 5. i'm catherine heenan and i'm ken wayne, the entertainment world is saddened after learning of the passing of betty white to legend the film and television and one of the world's most beloved celebrities as the entertainment world is mourning the loss of a very likable hollywood hero. sam

>> after story of a popular snickers commercial fans launched a facebook campaign to get her to host saturday night live in 2010 it worked. and she became the oldest and one of the best hosts in snl history. >> campaign to get me to host saturday night live. i didn't know what facebook and know that i do know what it is. i have to say it sounds like a huge waste of >> white parlayed that hosting gig into a starring role in the tv land show hot in cleveland. which one or another and the end to sag awards. i am now in addition to acting that he has served as the ambassador for animal rights donating hundreds of thousands of dollars to the la zoo, perhaps the only thing she enjoyed more than helping animals was being in front of the camera. and when i asked her what kept her going after 8 decades in hollywood. she said it was the internal joy

and gratefulness for her career. i've been around so long they can't get rid 3 years is a long time would live or green. >> that 90 years old and still be. privilege to be asked to do stuff. and i i am i don't take it for granted. they teach the remit of them. >> you know it. people in every generation can liked her mean everybody like betty white and and it's i think the reason is simple because she she looked great as she matured through those decades to the point where she was kind of this maternal figure. but the things that came out of that mouth didn't quite match her very pleasant and charming demeanor because she could kind of be a little bit of a mouth which was endearing and people loved it. yeah. remember the snickers

commercial saturday night live, which they referenced as she was just a lot of fun. a lot of fun. and that's i think that's how people related these want to hang out with somebody like exactly. coming up on kron 4 news. we're going to talk live with a filmmaker who worked closely with the trailblazing actress on one of her last projects among others. and that's coming up at 5.30. >> we do have breaking news out of the east bay to tell you about. there is a shooting investigation at the sun valley mall in concord. police just confirming within the last 5 minutes that they are looking into some kind of shooting. you're looking at video from the citizen app of the day. police activity concord police just tweeted out the mall is on lockdown, but they say there does not appear to be any threat to the public. they're still advising people to stay away. we have one of our reporters headed to the scene. we'll bring you any updates as soon as they come into the newsroom. now to a developing story this afternoon. longtime bay area.

television news anchor frank somerville is facing dui charges for a crash that happened in oakland last night. >> and kron four's obtained some video of the collision. >> oh, my he's >> you can hear people reacting as this crash happened. the porsche rear ended another vehicle believed to be an audi forcing that driver to get out of the audi. the person driving the porsche who is believed to be somerville, then slams both vehicles through the intersection into a pole on the other side of the street. while a group of people watch this entire scene play out. many with their cell phones out taping what happened? this happened at the intersection of grand avenue and broadway just after 7.45 last night,

somerville was taken to the hospital hospital to be checked out. and then he was later taken the santa rita jail where he was booked on dui charges. the other driver was not hurt. somerville has been a longtime anchor of ktvu fox 2 but has not appeared on the air for several months. kron 4 has reached out to ktvu for statement. but has yet to receive a response. time for a look at the forecast as we look live at the embarcadero a pretty looking day, but to pretty cold. >> chief meteorologist lawrence karnow joins us now with more on just how cold it isn't going to get. yeah. tonight. if you're headed out to do a little reveling for the new year's bundle up. it is going to be very cold out ws dropping down the 20's in some of the valleys skies have cleared out. the good news is nice dry day. lots of sunshine around the bay area. sure. but cool but still very nice. and we needed really a few dry days. we're going to i think as we head through the weekend right now. you can see on the doppler radar. keeping your skies. mostly clear. i don't

think we have to worry about much in the way of cloud cover, maybe a few passing clouds and that is about it. temperatures, though, already getting a little chilly outside 47 degrees in santa rosa 47 in livermore. we've had some much drier air begin to mix into the bay area with that drier air these temperatures. we're going to fall off in a hurry. so few headed out toward the midnight hour planning being cold out there timing out on the models here, they can see the united state mostly clear as we take you toward the midnight hour. the new year. yeah. looks like we're going to ring in the new year. nice and clear around the bay area. but on the cold side, these temperatures really dropping off tonight. some of these numbers down maybe in the upper 20's in places like santa rosa. so very cold weather. then we start out the new year looks like that will be a nice sunny day around the bay area to but the temperatures. yeah, they'll be the big story early tomorrow morning. frost all around much of the bay area even inside the bay. expect a cold start the beginning of 2022 guys. all right, lawrence, thanks very much. and as you ring in the new year. tonight, law enforcement will be out in full force.

>> 362 people were arrested for dui in california during the christmas weekend. the chp will be conducting maximum enforcement as they call it. again this weekend. kron four's rob nesbitt joins us live with more on how officers are trying to prevent trouble or even tragedy tonight. rob. >> catherine, this is a time to celebrate. we made it through a difficult year after all. but with ride sharing apps, there's really no excuse to get behind the wheel after a night of drinking. you've heard drive sober or get pulled over. but the stats prove it christmas weekend 28 people died in car crashes on california roadways and chp conducted an average of one dui arrest every 9 minutes plan >> you know, we we want to lower the statistics chp officer edgar vega says maximum enforcement will be happening for new year's eve. police on high alert for anyone making the wrong decision speed violations.

was at the canyon middle school in castro valley last week, governor newsom announced that 6 million at-home covid test kits would be distributed to k through 12 public and charter school students as the winter break comes to a close. california. >> has been able to keep schools open at a higher rate than most of the states because of what we're doing here today. i'm using a rapid covid test. and because california has really promoted the importance of getting a simply put. we want to make sure that takes a test before they come to school. and so that if someone is symptomatic that they can quarantine safely. we can keep the rest of the school community safe and we can continue to support keeping our schools open. >> school districts all over the bay area say they will continue to conduct masking protocols daily health screenings and will continue to push for everybody to get vaccinated and get a booster shot.

>> a wildfire in colorado has destroyed hundreds of homes and forced 10's of thousands of people to evacuate. ashley michaels tells us about the act vaccination efforts as crews continue to try to contain the fire. >> it anybody in the community of thousands. we need to get out there. we're just minutes to leave white house. is all the medication that we are just near main street in lewisville. they're literally going door to door right now, knocking on doors, making sure that people have evacuated from this area. as fire crews rounded up the last few people in town who are grabbing what they could from their homes right over there like we're blocks over white house tie the roads turned a one-way exits as people look like really and it looks like it's right behind us. it's crazy. a smoke-filled sky turning darker every minute in. it's

pretty crazy. i mean, we've dealt with fires and smoke before but never something that's close. >> people just trying their best to stave off the worst fire i don't know. but it's coming and it did. the official count 580 homes gone. unofficial count. >> likely much higher. the thick smoke is really just coming right on top of us. now from every single direction. and it's just truly, truly heartbreaking to see. a wildfire fueled by wind that turned a community into a catastrophe. just a very serious situation. you guys. we don't feel safe. we got to go. and as the sun set the flames shifted again taking entire neighborhoods with it watching collapse in just the last couple of minutes here as firefighters are working on this structure. >> never seen anything like that. you face really, really hard really hard to watch and see and witness someone's someone's go up in flames like that.

>> again. that was ashley michael's reporting for us tonight. at least 7 people have been injured. but there are no immediate reports of any deaths or of anyone missing a snow system is heading into that area and that will help keep the fire from growing the fire is currently 0% contained. >> time for a look at the forecast. also conditions tonight in colorado as we're looking live over downtown san francisco, dry and clear and cold. lawrence. yeah, cold around here. and of course they've got that snow. that is now moving into colorado. they've got a storm system that rolled over the rockies that system also partly responsible for those winds are gusting over a 100 miles per hour really fanning those flames yesterday. and so the winds have backed away off. now. that's some good news. look at the long-range forecast. we get right back in windy conditions as we head in toward next friday across the front range of the rockies. so here it is. you see the snow moving in now. we've got winter storm warnings up expecting as much as 5, maybe 6 inches on the ground. so of course that is going to put a damper on the fire. that is

some good news there. but all those folks without a home. now and they've got some very cold air moving in. so dangerous conditions continuing into colorado back out west. we go and we've got some dry weather for us as high-pressure kind of building in now. and that ridge is going to settle in with some much drier air that's going make for very cold night outside temperatures dropping off around the bay area in the 40's along the coastline. 46 in dublin. 47 in livermore love these numbers really going to fall off as that sun sets tonight, these temperatures headed down the 30's even before midnight tonight. so we do plan to head do plan on some very cold weather. looks like we'll start out dry for the new year high pressure going to hold on here. that will be just enough to bring us some sunshine and some dry weather for tomorrow. the temperatures still going to be on the cool side. you're starting a very cold in the 20's 30's early tomorrow morning. the most folks could be sleeping enough. so you look at numbers running up in the 50's tomorrow afternoon. next few days. we keep it dry into the new year as well. and then things begin to change a monday doesn't look as impressive now. looks like just a chance of showers monday and tuesday, maybe a

lingering shower come wednesday morning of the new year. you are. it's turning now some sports news. looks like forty-niners quarterback jimmy garoppolo may not be ready to play against the houston texans on sunday. >> as he continues to recover from that thumb injury. he suffered against the titans last thursday. earlier today head coach kyle shanahan said that after missing the entire week of practice. garoppolo is doubtful, but because he hasn't officially been ruled out. shanahan did not definitively declare number 3 overall pick trey lance as the starter for sunday's game. but of course of jimmy can't go. all signs are pointing to lance on getting that start. how to starting the new year off as a multimillionaire sound. well, tomorrow night. your chance to win the powerball jackpot. it's now climbed to 500 million dollars. the top prize has been growing since october. 4th. the next drawing is just before 8 o'clock tomorrow on new year's day. coming up on kron 4 news. thousands of flight cancellations continue across the country. when will

>> welcome back to kron. 4 news holiday travel plans once again affected by a lot of flight cancellations across the country. so far nationwide, more than a 1000 flights have been canceled. that's according to flight tracking website flight aware thousands of flights have been canceled since christmas eve. part of the problem has been the spread of the omicron variant which has affected flight crews at several airports and tsa workers and everybody associate was traveling at the airport. here's a look at how they air bay area airports are fairing. these numbers represent both incoming and outgoing flights at sfo. 59 flights were canceled today. oakland 6 flights have been canceled. and in san jose 11 flights have been canceled. crew shortages and positive covid cases have led to thousands of flight cancellations throughout the country. kron four's charles clifford has a look at what's happening at bay area airports. this. >> new year's eve. >> well, here at sfo on friday . more und the bay ar flight cancellations as covid-19 wreaks havoc on

staffing at multiple airlines. now, according to flightaware, dot com nationwide on friday. there were 6500 delayed flights and more than 2800 cancellations. jetblue united delta. pretty much all airlines canceling flights problems caused by covid-19. now here in the bay area at sfo. there were 55 cancellations on friday. 51 delays san jose. 9 canceled flights 26 delays in oakland. there were 6 cancellations and 15 delays. also here at sfo at the international terminal. covid-19 testing is required for many international flights that has resulted in a long line of people waiting to get tested before they can get on their airplanes. now, if you're headed out to the airports over the next couple of days. keep in mind that we are expecting more cancellations. this problem is going to get worse before it gets better. call ahead. check with your airline to make sure that your flight it's still leaving on time. but for now at sfo, charles clifford kron. 4 news.

>> the loss of betty white is being felt here at home. the golden girls live show has been a longtime san francisco tradition. the show just wrapped up a week ago at the victoria theater in the city. kron four's. gayle ong talk was one of the actors who played whites hit character rose. >> you know exactly how you feel. she's really part of my life and having her be gone off a sudden is heartbreaking darcy drawing or played betty white's beloved character rose nyland for 7 years in the draft version of the golden girls really gotten to know. >> her as an actress and i've lived with her my whole life and growing up with mary tyler moore show tillis i even share the same birthday. drawling or is the owner of oasis nightclub in san francisco.
