well, past yeah. hopefully into the new year. even we need all the rain we can get and i feel johnson saying that it's coming in a man at a manageable rate. not too much quickly, which is all good things. yeah. we've got team coverage of this this morning will tran is tracking the rain. >> and the storms up in the north bay will get rain harvey keeping an eye on the wet commute because it is being impacted by all of this. and then of course, john, we'll start with you in the weather center. >> walk us through where the rain is now. yeah, it's pretty much everywhere right now. but the good thing is noel alluded to. it's nice and light across the bay area. so we are looking at a manageable amount, not a lot of flooding going on out there. just some wet slick conditions which is going to have an impact. the biggest impact these next several days is going to be up in the sierra and northern california has feet of snowfall pile up there. even before we get to the holiday weekend and that is going to hold a lot of people up on their travels. your look outside this morning is showing you those gray skies can hardly see anything from our camera here at the you
would normally see a little bit of the transamerica building in the distance. but that rainfall, no cloud cover is blocking out the view. >> now we're sitting with rainfall currently is like i said, pretty much widespread everywhere. it's just that light green sitting across the bay. some of her heavier spots are just some moderate pockets out in eastern solano county, right around lafayette out along highway 24 and then in those upper elevations of the east bay. some brief moderate shower activity too. the santa cruz mountains. if you're heading up highway 17 also seeing a brief area of rainfall picking up zooming out. you do have snow up in the sierra nevada. it's starting. well above 4500 feet. but as we work our way through this forecast conditions will start to get colder and snow level will drop lower and lower because of it. meaning more areas are going to get slick up there in the high country light showers will continue on and off today. so do expect a day to just bring the rain jacket, keep it on hand heavier rainfall really arrives overnight tonight leading into early tomorrow morning. so
tomorrow morning's commute is going to be greeted unfortunately, by some really slick spots, maybe even some standing water on roadways into our early morning commute, especially current temperatures mostly in the 40's oakland in hayward, egypt. 47 timber on it. 44 not coldest mornings, but it is one of our weather ones. so be prepared for that rain. i know you've been talking about slick conditions what are you saying? yes, conditions pretty much across all of our bridges out there right here in the maze. 5.80, westbound east of grand avenue in oakland and 8.80 south of market street. >> you have accidents, but because it's so early in the morning. i'm not seen any major delays out there traveling from the east bay into the city right now. you want to take your time because conditions are very slick. it says 8 minutes. but again, slow down as you're traveling across across towards the peninsula. little under 15 minutes for your drive time there with slick conditions. i can see the puddles on the bridge heading out of richmond. you're at about 8 minutes but definitely taking it slow this morning and the rain continues to come down
along the golden gate bridge about 21 minutes and saying from 37 to the tolls. but again, you're going to see puddles of water as you're traveling across noel james, back to you. >> all right. thank you very much. rain. and here's just a quick look at what it was like on my commute in this is westbound 5.80 as we're coming up on the castro valley bart station. and yeah, it's like just as reagan was sayi-g and i did a few times hit a little bit of standing water. you can hear that, ok, rush, you know, as it hits entire party. absolutely. so be careful if you're out there. >> we're seeing wet conditions like this all around the bay area. >> we do have again team coverage this morning. it continues with another look at stormtracker 4 radar where you can san francisco kind of south north bay is really, think a liytle bit of rain. and then of course, san jose really getting in fact, up in the north. but we have kron four's. will tran standing by live marin county looking at conditions at this current moment and will that is up. rain is coming
>> just to echo john. it's a nice gentle rain. it feels like seattle. that's where i'm from. it doesn't come down hard. the good news is your morning commute and it's still light. you will not be battered by the wind. so the good part is it's not a 1, 2, punch. it's a one punch, meaning the rain. this is lucky drive historically obviously it pools up for northbound one. oh, one. so if you it's a little dark, it will have to wait for some headlights that are coming in our direction. probably a any moment now. and you can see the water splash up the tail lights. those the cars heading in the commute direction towards san francisco light rain, windy or even breezy at times at all. they if you cross the bridge, you've got to be careful, especially if you're following semi trucks, which this time i had to tell you, plenty of semi trucks as they're dating around the bay area. here's a there you go. there's a garbage truck coming through and you can see all the water splash up and that's the problem because it's a heavy vehicle but your little
car. james, i know you have a tiny prius. i believe you will be seeing your life last right before your eyes. so you got to be careful as far as that is concerned. but so far so good. plenty of room between the cars. >> take it easy. >> i said this for ever more. i like it when cars start to stack up that way. you don't speed everybody's just going about 20 miles per hour. and james, i'm more you have your desk and going into the station is that vision. yeah. it is. yeah. james cam, jim cam, as i like to call it every now and when i think about it all a hit record on that we should all get cars equipped with jay tv. absolutely. >> and with that i drive a prius was not a it's not a tiny us a tiny prius. it's but i got my looking at my shoes like gosh, what and are bigger than your okay. you want you
know, sandals. >> you're going to catch pneumonia will. but some shoes on. love you by so she's in the words of a y a we'll check in with in the next hour. >> happening today, governor newsom is expected to give more information about a new mandate. requiring health care workers in california to get their booster shots. governor newsom announcing that mandate on twitter last night. he says they're stepping up efforts to get people vaccinated and boosted the decision comes as data shows omicron cases are increasing across the state. that's why the governor says our hospitals need to be prepared. an infectious disease specialist at ucsf. doctor peter chin, hong agrees. >> is it going to be sick just like everybody else, not very sick because all of them have been vaccinated. >> but sick enough or identified on testing that they'll have to stay home for 10 days. >> governor newsome will hold a news conference later this morning to release more
information on the mandate. it set for 1030, and alameda county. >> in the south bay smith. a san jose mayor sam liccardo is proposing to add booster shots to the city's vaccine mandate currently all city employees as well as visitors to any city own facilities have to already proved that they're fully vaccinated. the only exceptions would be for the very young children who allowed to get it yet. and for people who haven't been vaccinated long enough to be eligible for the booster. >> we know the vaccines wear off over time. that is they're affect their effectiveness declines over many, many months. we all know that we need boosters. >> if approved san jose would become the first city in california to have a requirement like that city leaders are expected to discuss the issue this coming january 5th. >> in the north, a solano county has recorded its first covid related death in a baby. yeah. doctors say this is a crucial reminder now that getting vaccinated not only
protect yourself. >> but it also protects the people around you, especially those who aren't in this case old enough to get a vaccine shot yet. right conference camila barco joining us live in the newsroom with what we know camila. >> well, you guys said this is an example of why health officials are urging people to get vaccinated. those vaccines not only protect yourself but for the people like james said who cannot get vaccinated like babies. this child was less than a year old. it's the first infant death related to covid in solano county. now it's not known what city the baby lived in or the gender. but the child did contract the delta variant currently, there are about 377 active covid cases in solano county since the pandemic started 342 people have died because of the virus. now, the county's health officer says that these type of death, the pediatric ones are rare, but children can get sick and die from covid.
>> people who are eligible for vaccine should vaccinated. that creates a barrier to protect those who can't be vaccinated. and for an instant. that's really the only means of protection that you have. >> now with the holidays here. health experts are urging people. now more than ever to get vaccinated and get boosted health experts say these are some ways to reduce the spread of covid. so for example, where a mask we've heard that before avoid large crowds and poorly ventilated areas stay home. when you're feeling sick, get tested. if you have symptoms or have been exposed to someone who has covid and be mindful of people who have health problems. the elderly and young kids now solano county is continuing to offer covid-19 vaccines at their max. the axe, a nation clinic. it's at the solano county fairgrounds and allay. if you need one. the clinic is operating until this upcoming january 29th james. well, back to you. all right. thank you very much. camila.
>> over in the east bay. the oakland city council has decided to require proof of vaccinations in order to enter some businesses, similar rules are already in place in san francisco and berkeley. some oakland business owners say the move is long overdue starting february 1st, here's a list of businesses where you will have to show proof of vaccination in order to enter this is in oakland, some include restaurants bars, coffee shops, gyms, amongst others listed on your screen. movie theaters, concert venues, that sort of thing. owner of chop house and calavera in oakland said the move will not only protect customers but also his staff. he says even though restaurants ctrrently have the option of asking customers for proof of vaccines. many have avoided doing so because they wanted to protect staff members from any potential confrontations. they might get into from unvaccinated people pushing back now with the mandate on the way. he says it's going to make things run a whole lot smoother.
>> i think that the city mandating it is a really important having this small businesses kind of. seizing them. some says small business decided that they would have they would they would ask people for their vaccination status and that creates a little bit of a difficult situation for our staff where, you know, there could confronted by people saying that, you know that like this idea but with the city give us that mandate saying that we have we have to do this. it gives us the ability that actually, you know, for speed by have vaccine so that our business. so i bought it. i think it's long overdue. i would love to see this 6 months ago. but i think this is a is a great step. >> starting january 15th businesses will have to begin posting signs, letting customers know about these upcoming changes. says he will spend the next few weeks getting his staff trained on how to check vaccination cards. spotting real ones from fake ones and of course, cross

>> welcome back. it's 5.15 on this wednesday morning. and you can see, i guess that snow, right. oh yeah. oh yeah, ok, i'm like is it rain or snow because yesterday john was saying that they were going to get rain before it turned into snow cause. it's a little right. maybe that maybe this right was funny. as you look at camera. john, what do you think? the tracking skills actually getting a little snow. okay. yes, snow levels 4500 feet right now, still relatively high, but. >> it will drop into were lower and lower and then the next week it's going to be all about the snowfall, but i'm james and noel. exactly right. it's kind of a rain-snow mix for some spots up in the sierra, which makes it really slick, especially as you're crossing from where we do have rainfall to where that snowfall is piling up. that's where you see a lot of ice formation that area in between where you get the re freeze
and then it definitely gets kind of icy this is your look up donner summit. well above snow level. and as you can see, things are moving along just fine. got the hazard lights on and some of these big rigs in conditions out there are now snow-packed after that roadway had been cleared out really nicely. so snow is falling up in the sierra and it's going to fall and increauingly low elevations through the upcoming weekend. this is going to have a huge impact on our travel. gradually, especially as we approach christmas weekend now skies across the bay area are pretty wet. we do have a light showers all across the region, including in the north bay. widespread light showers across the core of the bay area. south bay. not much different. some of your moderate showers are up around highway 17 right now. nothing super noteworthy at this very moment. we're all pretty much in the same boat right now. it's just that lie dose of rainfall just enough to get roadways wet a little bit slick now showers will continue on and off throughout the course of the day today. you can see that here in
future cast tonight, we will see rainfall really picking up. now. this is when we could see some brief periods of heavy rain during those overnight hours. this is right around midnight, heavy rain possible just south of san jose, especially in the north bay pushing through the bay area into our early morning commute tomorrow making for some really wet conditions for your thursday. thursday afternoon does come along with some breaks from the rain, possibly even a few hints of sunshine. but don't expect any of that to last for long as we work into the holiday weekend. you get those breaks on friday. but friday night things really kick back up. so it's a friday afternoon for christmas eve. a good chance to do some last-minute shopping. all those preps that you need to get done because then we work our way towards those evening. hours. friday rainfall kicks into gear and snowfall really starts to fall in some lower elevations. this is when you're going to see the multiple feet of snowfall piling up in the sierra nevada on through christmas day on saturday, sunday, monday, even into tuesday of next week. we do have a winter storm warning in effect right now all the
way through sunday up in the sierra. we're looking at anywhere from 4 to 8 feet of snowfall piling up in the high country. also winter storm warning in upper elevations of lake county. when you hit. i 5 north of redding. you will also be running into some heavy snowfall that direction today is going to be the warmest day of the remainder of this forecast. some upper 50's to low 60's, not going to be seeing numbers like that for a while after today, daytime highs will cool down a bit tomorrow. even further into the weekend. as for our breaks from the rain tomorrow midday. we will see a brief break from the rain. even some sunshine friday afternoon on christmas eve. but after that showers really pick up friday night saturday, sunday, monday into tuesday. we'll continue to bring rain and as i've been talking about that low elevation, snow fall really piling up reyna. john, thank you for that. so conditions are slick all across our highways and bridges. >> we do have an accident 80 south of market street. there and we had much more of a delay earlier. so looks like that is not causing a delay.
we also have one along 5.80, that has since been cleared, though. so that's the good news. still pretty slick as you're traveling from the east bay into the city says 9 minutes definitely give yourself a little more time. no need to speed heading across towards the peni sula. we're at about 14 but still very misty pockets of water out of richmond. a little under 9 minutes for your drive time. hopefully you take it easy as you're driving there and 37 to the tolls. about 20 minutes as you're traveling along the golden gate bridge while james, back to you. >> thank you very much. rain to 5.20. is the time and president biden isn't giving up on his build back better plan as he looks ahead to his second year in office. he says he still believes that plan will help the economy grow. that's right. >> alexandra limon is joining us live from washington, dc this morning. she's got the very latest details on that alexander. good morning. while james, good morning. what many congressional democrats are angry and they want to move ahead with the build back better plan as is simply to
for senator joe manchin to vote against it on the record. but. >> president biden seems like he's much more open to continuing the negotiations. >> senator mansion, i'm going to get something president biden isn't giving up on his nearly 2 trillion dollars, climate change and social investment plan. on tuesday, president biden got passionate when talking about how the build back better plan will help families afford things like life, saving medications. >> imagine being a parent. look under the child. you can't afford. you have no house to borrow against. you have no savings. >> the president said his proposal will help families in various ways childcare. you can reduce 5 to 70%. president biden says more affordable childcare means millions of women will be able to return to the workforce. but those arguments so far have failed to convince senator joe mansion, a member of the
president's own party who says the plan could make inflation worse. i can not vote to continue with this piece of legislation on sunday, senator manchin takes the idea of passing the current version of the plan. senator manchin wants the bill to go through a more regular legislative process and be smaller and more targeted president biden is pushing back. >> sectional mission. reno fastball back better world trouble. because it is going to grow the economy without him. we're not going to grow. >> and as president biden looks ahead to his next year in office. his message is that he remains optimistic that he can get congress to pass his plan live in washington. alexandra all right, thank you for that live report. >> it is 5.22. we'll take a quick break, but again, we're tracking a lot of rain that's going to be with us for quite a little while. that's our big story not only on the weather front but also on the news front to and traffic as well as causing problems. here's a
hero faces seemingly impossible challenge. tension builds... the plot twist the hero prevails in hollywood, this would be the end. but our here, we are just getting started. introducing the all-new nissan frontier. but our here, we are just getting started. are going to be hitting the roads in the coming days heading to where they want to get for christmas. we're saying it looks a little bit busier this morning. headed into the seen the last couple of days. if you're planning your holiday vacation. aaa has
released its list of the best and worst times to be on the road. and i guess right now is a good time to be out there wanting to leave tomorrow, though. >> the worst time to be on the road is between noon and 06:00pm best time after 07:00pm. so wait down. no one had out there. >> if you're going to be leaving on christmas eve. you want to leave before 1 o'clock in the afternoon and then if you're coming home the day after christmas. you want to travel before noon because after that is going to get pretty jammed on the 27th the best time to hit the roads is before one pm. >> here is a look at the gas prices. if you do need to fill up before you head out. according to aaa, a gallon of regular going to cost about $4 and $0.83 in san francisco. price drops to for 74 in oakland san jose about $0.3 more expensive and then up in the north bay. a gallon of regular is going to cost you $4.90. that's a little lower than we on monday. i think we were so that's still eye-popping for people

>> welcome back. this kind of heat, if you can believe it, that nice bright light that you see there in the middle of the screen. that's quite our up there this morning. did in. >> or that's fog. that's just heavy rain are missed and maybe a combination of all of its all the we can't see through it very well. and that's kind of indicative, john, of what people are going to seen on the roads just to be hard to see that far out yeah. visibility, you know, the bay area's night like being a little shrouded out but we are looking at that miss that definitely a little dose of fog and also the rainfall see you guys are exactly right. just a wet damp morning. this gentle rainfall that we've been seeing across the bay area as a result in much flooding. but what it has done is make roadways really slick. and yeah, visibility is certainly lower than pockets. to your view oitside of the berkeley hills cam right now. also seeing those misty views looking down from the hillsides on into the east bay. we are seeing mostly light showers on the map. couple of spots. a heavier rainfall out towards highway 50 as you head around plaster
ville in sacramento. otherwise, though, the bay area's actually just very quiet. this is a nice misting dose of rainfall is making things a little on the slick side. so do be mindful of that. just hit the roads a little extra early south bay conditions. nice and light as far as rain goes. we have those moderate showers in san francisco further north, some lie areas of rain to now, if we zoom out the sierra nevada is actually seeing some heavy snowfall, right towards the south of lake tahoe. this is actually right around yosemite national park right here that you're looking at some of that heavy snow. as for lake tahoe itself. it is definitely snowing up there. we do have a bit of rain, snow mix right around emerald bay. but around south lake tahoe. we do have snow falling and by the time we reach early next week. south lake tahoe could have seen upwards of 47 inches of snowfall. so it is really going to be coming down these next few days, light rainfall stays the a way that we're going to be throughout the course of the day today on and off light showers tonight.
rainfall picks up in heavy pockets of rain can be expected into early tomorrow morning as our next frontal boundary crosses through. this is only get a lower temperatures more meaning more snowfall potential up in the sierra nevada. and this is going to be skier and snowboarder snow right here, the kind of stuff that we want to see on those slopes. tomorrow morning. 07:30am, look at the south bay and parts of the east bay going to have some heavy rainfall falling. now as far as temperatures go, it's not the coldest mornings were in the 40's to 50's san jose right at 50 degrees below what 43 oakland at 47 will be breaking down more of your forecast as we reach the holiday weekend. still to come, first, though, with wet roadways, a very important traffic forecast. what are we looking at? exactly. we're looking at roadway flooding in some certain spots northbound one. oh, one to that. 3.80, west. >> connector reports of roadway flooding in south san francisco. and as you're traveling from the east bay into the city. definitely pockets of water on the bay bridge this morning. still with a light commute, though a little under 10 minutes for
your drive there heading across towards the peninsula little under 14 minutes. still very slick across the richmond center fell bridge about 9 minutes traveling across towards sandra fell and 37 to the tolls here along the golden gate bridge with slick conditions. 20 minutes. take your time. no need to rush today. noel, james, back to you. thanks for a big story we're following this half hour as omicron takes over as the dominant variant here in the united states. the president has announced several big steps. >> to mitigate the impact and that includes making home tests available for washington correspondent basil john has the story. president joe biden says americans do not need to panic but need to do their part to prevent the omicron variant from doing real damage. well want us to still tuesday. president joe biden announced new steps. the federal government is taking as omicron cases rise throughout the country to prepare. we know more just

>> that's just not very prudent to do that right now. >> both fauci and the president want americans to understand that the country is not back to where it was in march of 2020 because they know more about the virus and they have the supplies to deal with it reporting in washington. i'm basil john. >> coronavirus testing has come a long way since the start of the pandemic for many, it's gotten easier with at-home tests. doctors warn while those tests are convenient. they're not always super accurate. >> if you're positive on those you'd like more likely to be infectious. if you're negative by one of those, you may still. the positive by pcr. but you're probably less infections. so it's a it's a good screening tool. >> as you head out for your holiday celebrations. you are encouraged to get a full pcr test before going to your destination. >> speaking of tests, university of california is delaying its return to in-person classes for 2 weeks after the holiday break. the

then the other large cities in northern california sacramento san jose and san francisco. we have to acknowledge that. yes, we need a higher baseline of police officers. while we are also re imagining public safety. >> taylor's actually running to be oakland's next mayor. and he's also calling for a bigger investment in surveillance cameras to be installed throughout the city. >> well, we are seeing that light rainfall all across the bay area this morning. obviously making for some wet conditions there as can't see much of anything out there, low cloud cover, certainly resulting in some lower visibility pockets too today, not the coldest of days. it's our last one reaching anywhere close to the 60's talking colder and wetter weather. still ahead. >> and we are seeing slick conditions out there as you're traveling today is a day to leave the house. a lot earlier just to give yourself more time will have a look at your drive times across bridges. once we get back from break.
