merchants and community members say they are on edge after 3 shootings in just 3 weeks in san francisco's famous haight ashbury neighborhood. good evening, everybody. thanks for being with us tonight on kron 4 news at 9. i'm grant lotus and i'm vicki liviakis tonight, supervisor dean preston who represents the district held a town hall to address the recent spike in violence. there are conference taylor. the second joins us now live with more know what they discussed. taylor. >> well, tonight's discussion centered around many hot topics we've been talking about crime. the district attorney recall and san francisco's reputation of being soft on criminals. neighbors flooded. the comments wondering where do we go from here to bring safety back to this area. >> i have never felt afraid for my life. and i don't ever recall the violent being neighbor sharing grief and frustration on wednesday. >> after 3 shootings in just 3 weeks. this haight ashbury community in san francisco supervisor dean preston held a

town hall on wednesday to address the recent violence. we know there are recent weeks have been particularly difficult for our and it's really heartbreaking not to experience violence within our community. more police patrols have been posted up in the haight ashbury corridor. >> following the death of 21 year-old samuel jessup of san francisco. he died last week on haight street after an exchange of gunfire that also left another person critically injured. there is some speculation on social media and through the conversation having. >> that a business was targeted they went to a that's not the case. what i can say is that. 2 individuals that came through in a and had a confrontation with the victim. fire. the c-urage. there was also there was more than one tar parties from the and party that was on the street. both

injured, the party from the vehicles. the one that that tied, it just a few days later. >> more violence erupted in the neighborhood after an attempted burglary at central park natural market late saturday night, an employee says 4 men used hammers to try and break into the store when a man who lives in the back apartment interrupted and was shot at thankfully the bullet missed the tenant back on october 22nd another man wasn't as lucky. he was critically injured during an afternoon hail of gunfire since the increased police patrols this week captain chris been dreamy said there hasn't been any shootings robberies or violent assaults. >> however, he says the increased police presence in the neighborhood is not sustainable due to limited staffing. >> and due to a limited time frame of that meeting tonight, only a handful of community members were able to get their questions in and those who did get a word. a word in all echoed similar opinions of not enough beinn done to stop the crime in this city and then turn prosecuting criminals

live in the newsroom. i'm taylor was accurate. porting kron 4 news. >> thank you, taylor. now to the east bay woman was shot near oakland's fox theater today. she is expected to survive. police say she's in stable condition tonight. she was treated at a nearby hospital. no further information on any suspects or motive. what may have led up to this. a library employee who works across the street from the crime scene describes what happened right after the shooting. >> it was mostly them and that we're going in and out to try get her. it helped in tried and things like that. really i hope things get better. >> the same clear by about 05:30am tonight. but the shooting forced tonight's all-time low concert at the fox to be canceled anybody with tickets can expect they say, to get a full refund. it. >> big story tonight out of

belmont. police say that they have arrested 4 people in connection to the 2019 murder of mohamed othman offerings. body was found in the parking lot of central elementary school on january 7th 2019. he was a 17 year-old student from redwood city. now, according to police, their initial investigation led them to believe that the suspects involved new city belmont says this was a complicated investigation involving a number of departments working together 3 adults and one miner are all now in custody for their connection to off death. 2 of those arrested are identified as 23 year-old ruben gonzalez, the lateness of indianapolis and a 21 year-old antonio valencia of concord. the other 2 suspects are not being identified because one is currently a minor. the other was a minor at the time of often steph officials don't indicate the motive for the killing. >> students at lowell high school in san francisco staged a walkout today to protest

harassment and assault. silence is violence. they said district officials say in addition to investigating current cases, students are calling on them to revisit cases reported over the summer and last school year san francisco unified school district has released a statement in response to the walkout today. it reads in part as few sd wants all students to know their concerns are taken seriously. the district encourages all students to report issues of harassment to a trusted adult at school as if usd is required to respond to incidents of reported harassment. >> sean reaction tonight from alleged assault survivors after a raid conducted a former north bay mayor's home. it happened this morning in windsor at the home of dominic foot poli for po lay resigned.

several months ago following angry cries demanding his resignation following multiple allegations that he drugged assaulted and attacked women, including a council member kron theresa has more on what was taken from his home and how the alleged victims feel about the latest developments. >> sheriff's deputies taking multiple personal items from former mayor dominic for police home in windsor early wednesday morning. you can see brown evidence bags concealing what precisely was removed from the home. but in this picture, you can see backpacks east the warrant, just the latest chapter in the case were nearly a dozen women speaking out claiming the once highly regarded rising star committed crimes against sam, including battery assault groping and rape currently represents 7 of the survivors of crimes that dominic the poli committed against them. >> i spoke with tracy korea

merritt college and found her calling in public service. she already made history as the first long council member in california history and she wants to do it again. as mayor has her supporters point to a track record fighting for tenants right. and affordable housing she's actually just one of only 2 council members right now who is or enter herself. tell advocated for paid sick leave as the daughter of laos refugees stood up for immigrant rights and supported early childhood program said helped her own family. once like head start. several of her backers include attorney general rob bonta, his wife assembly member mia been to council oakland council vice mayor rebecca kaplan and councilmember nikki fortunato boss. >> i want to be that champion. i want to be that mayor, that collaborate so that we can make a government will i will i will your next people come

based on rising case rates in other parts of the country and plateauing hospitalizations cases and positivity rates here in california after they all had been steadily declining. >> vaccines our way through this pandemic. we are concerned about the winter. we're concerned about rising case numbers pressure on our hospitals from a number of other issues on top of covid. >> state. health officials say about 90% of adults in california have gotten at least one dose of the covid vaccine. >> santa clara county health officials are urging residents to get their booster shots before thanksgiving boosters are available to those over 65 those 18 and over with underlying conditions and those who work or live in high-risk settings. but county health officials say that if you drill down on those guidelines. pretty much means that. everybody's eligible. >> underlying medical conditions include everything, including depression anxiety.

hypertension, diabetes obesity. >> there are very few of us who don't fall into one of you know, meet one of those eligibility criteria. >> a doctor cody says that means a million county residents are now eligible for the vaccine so far only about 20% of those eligible to receive the booster shot amid a modest but concerning uptick in new cases and hospitalizations. now is the time to head off a holiday surge. new developments tonight with the covid mess on cal's campus. for the first time we're hearing from. >> members of the cal football team about the confusion that lead some frustrated players to vent on social media yesterday on kron 4 news we told you about that outbreak that lead the teams to reschedule the game with usc. it was supposed to be this weekend. today the berkeley health department said 44 members of the cal football program have tested positive for covid officials say the

team did not follow basic protocol scott for jonathan mccall live on that. cal campus tonight with new developments. jonathan, this is one of those, you know, depending on who you talk to. >> what happened. >> that is absolutely right. grant. you know what talking with members of the cal football team tonight via zoom they say they're now looking forward to trying to turn this chapter of ugliness of what exactly happened with the confusion, with the covid protocols here. they did say that now that they know they've talked with university health system. they talk with berkeley public health leaders now everyone is 100% on board, but it comes as 44 members of this football team tested positive for covid-19. and once again, they say that moving forward, things will be different. >> i think moving forward. everyone is very clear about, you know, the protocols that are in place going forward. what is expected? you know, clearing up the confusion over

covid-19 protocols. members of the cal berkeley football team same everyone is now 100% clear. the team practice for the first time wednesday. but the limited number of players. >> it came just one day after news of a covid-19 outbreak forced the school to cancel this weekend's game against usc mean believe definitely had to adjust. you know, this outbreak happened to the missing outside. >> practices of the covid shorter. you know, we have different things that are different with sand. within practiced tuesday, kron 4 1st told you when some of the players vented their frustrations on social media over what they say was a lack of clarity over covid-19 protocols between the school and berkeley health leaders. >> the berkeley public health department hit back confirming 44 cases of covid-19 on the team. the department said that members failed to abide by public health measures, including not getting tested when sick staying home. when sick and wearing mask indoors.

that the trainers and the doctors to a return to play protocol. >> on anybody who's been covid positive and there's. that goes into that. but it's not that the coaches. oversee cal head football coach justin wilcox not specifically addressing the comments made from the health department. >> but says he is optimistic moving forward about his players and his program. there's still a lot of. >> a lot of good out there and you know, i don't envision this being a long-term. issue. you know, next year in the year beyond not to say that it's ioing to go away. but maybe that we're in a better place. >> so we did learn that 2 members of the cal berkeley football team are currently not vaccinated. one of the questions as to head coach justin wilcox tonight was if he didn't know if one of those 2 members of the team, carly

not vaccinated is also among the 44 members who are infected with covid-19. obviously cannot answer that question because of hippa violations. another issue that we want to ask is that because we know that 44 members of his team are currently testing positive for covid-19. they're also mingling in on this campus as well with other students. we reached out to cal berkeley officials to see if they are now concerned about a possible outbreak as a result of the members here on the team. contracting covid. so far we have yet to hear back from them as soon as we do. we'll let you know. as for the game itself, usc versus cal berkeley has now been rescheduled for december. 4th. the team will next take on stanford november 20th. we're live tonight in the cal berkeley campus jonathan mccall kron 4 news. >> thank you, jonathan. hopefully everybody gets healthy quickly. stay with kron 4 for the latest covid info that includes finding vaccines for kids. us 5 to 11 year-olds. they are up much

more info as well. you can scan the qr code there on your screen. you'll be directed to the special section on our website. that's kron 4 dot com. >> the oakland museum of california has temporarily closed its special exhibit due to water damage. we're told the damage happened from all that heavy rainfall that we had last month on october 24th the museum now says it's never had damage to this extent. kron four's gayle ong reports. >> no art works are artifacts were damaged, but it's going to take some time for repairs. we actually have to replace floors, ceilings and walls. so it's taking us a little longer than we helped the oakland museum of california is still cleaning up after last month's historic storm that brought heavy rain to the bay area water is goes everywhere. water is insidious and and once it is in the floor and in walls and ceilings. it's very hard to just, you know, dry it out. lori fogarty executive director and ceo of the oakland museum says the damage

occurred in the foyer of an exhibition space and in a gallery where an upcoming exhibit was being built. >> property restoration company is working on repairs, but the storm caused delays and temporary closures on 2 exhibitions. the mother ship voyage into afro. futurism will be closed until further notice. heat, a life in clay was set to reopen this weekend. now postponed and we're finally going to open it and the whole theme of the exhibition is around resilience. >> and how. >> you know that the enduring quality of these beautiful heath ceramics and we're we're really testing are resilient and these days, that's for sure. in the meantime, other gallery such as the art history and natural science collections are opened in the museum, including a project that took place during the 15 month closure during the pandemic. we just had renovated during that during covid times during our closure, our gardens and our gardens are still open and we're doing programming in our gardens. so there's plenty for people to still see him in coming to the museum are open. regular hours and so we still

now, not much in the way of fog worry about tonight and the whole rain line has shifted well to the north. you can really get a sense of high pressure building in as we clear around the state to see all the clouds up to 7 northwest. they're actually get pounded by an atmospheric river. that means that good old pineapple express taking aim at them, going to deal with likely some flash flooding over the next couple days across parts of washington also in oregon with some very, very heavy rain. we on the other hand, got high pressure overhead you've got a little bit of a northerly component to the wind. developing tonight. that is an offshore wind and it's that offshore wind that is really going to crank up the temperatures by tomorrow afternoon right now. cool in spots. we've got 52 degrees in santa rosa 57 and clear in concord, 55 degrees and a little more 60 still in san jose 57 in oakland, 59 degrees. as you make a way to san francisco. well, the next couple days. here we go. high pressure really going to start to build in. you can see a couple storms off the coastline. looks impressive.

but all that subtropical moisture had a well to the north as the jet stream begin to lift that is going to leave us high and dry. for now temperatures running above the average by tomorrow afternoon. we're talking about mid 70's in the warmer spots. guys, back to you. thanks, lawrence. the tragic death of a local boy who was swept out to sea is inspiring the installation of new safety stations along the coast. >> in january. 12 year-old. i run a proof. he drowned when he was just swept out to sea near half moon bay is trying to save his brother. the boy's family has fought to raise awareness about the potential dangers of bay area beaches. kron four's. dan thorn has the story now from half moon bay. >> these new safety systems to be found at several beaches along the san mateo county coast will be equipped with ring buoys and information on the hazards at the beach. the young drowning victims families, hoping the systems will help prevent future tragedies. nearly 10 months after a 12 year-old boy from fremont was swept out to sea and drowned near half moon

bay. new safety systems are being installed. a rune a proof he was playing along the water at cal ranch state beach in january when he was pulled out by a sneaker in the event happening there on the beach for us to even to and they know that the beachgoers were trying to find think somebody was too late, but the 7th graders family has since started a foundation to help raise awareness about the dangers that the ocean. >> they see the new life ring stations install that maverick speech and surfer's beach as just the beginning of making the water safer. bc has a stepping stone. >> to create more about this issue. there are the accident we want educate the crypt and from this project was able to get underway with help from the county harbor district and the nonprofit organization see valor, the system-hr unveiled wednesday. hopefully these these first 3 stations that have been solved will will save lives. it will inspire

>> an east bay oakland city workers may no longer have to worry about smoking weed while off the job. oakland's public safety committee voted unanimously to end testing for off the job cannabis use vice mayor in oakland. rebecca kaplan says the city is already facing a recruiting crisis. and quite frankly has trouble retaining employees with the current testing rules in place. the proposal will now go before the full city council and and approval. there would do away with testing for pot while you're off the job. the justice

department, meanwhile, is filing a lawsuit against uber for charging what they call wait time fees to passengers who have disabilities the suit alleges the rideshare company is violating the americans with disabilities act by charging disabled riders fees as their drivers wait for them to get it. uber does charge an extra fee for all passengers to take longer than 2 minutes to enter the rideshare car once it arrives at the destination, the federal government once the court to order uber to change its weight fee policy. also train its staff and drivers and pay monetary damages to everyone who's been impacted. uber says they have been in active discussions with the justice department adding they were surprised and disappointed by this lawsuit. >> coming up, a cash reward now being offered for information leading to an arrest in santa rosa bank robbery what information police are revealing about the investigation. hate crimes increased more than 30% last

thief in their city officers arrested a suspect who may be connected to several recent catalytic converter theft crimes. kron four's haaziq mod-yoon has that story. >> in the photographs that are pictured. there are several different brands that long to a car. a few catalytic converters, a replica handgun was kind of that orange tip as well. as a kind of ice, which thing is just like a burglary tool. take machine that can quickly cut out the talent. converters. >> a man arrested for allegedly being in possession of the stolen ribs is now under investigation for being the primary suspect in several recent catalytic converter thefts in the city of hayward, hayward police spokesperson officer cassandra fogle says it was a previous victims description of the suspect that that officers to contacting the man who was in a vehicle filled with these items and so when this case happened just a few days ago.

of shore zang and found co-defendant a key one wiggins guilty of robbery and causing great bodily harm as saying was an east bay research engineer and the scientists who was working at starbucks coffee shop. the man stole his laptop on mountain boulevard in montclair. in oakland and in that district, there is saying was run over by one of the thieves getaway after he was chasing it to get his laptop back. santa rosa. police are looking for suspects tied to an armed bank robbery this morning. it happened at west america bank on guerneville road at about 8.30, authorities say both men were carrying handguns and tied up 4 bank employees. they took some money from the bank but were unable to access the vault detectives are investigating if the suspects left in the car. but at this time they have no vehicle information. a cash reward is being offered for any information that leads to an arrest. in addition to the

start of the pandemic last year. california was dealing with an epidemic of hate in fact, a reported hate crimes climbed 31% from 2019 to 2020. and today the state's attorney general rob bonta visited san jose for the latest in a series of round tables. he's been holding to. >> try to develop strategies to better address bias and hate kron four's. dan kerman reports. there is no room for hate. here in san jose here in california. not here. not anywhere and not now, not ever in an ongoing series of roundtable discussions across california. >> attorney general rob bonta came to san jose wednesday to meet with elected and community leaders to identify concrete solutions to the epidemic of hate and also how to better protect california's residents, whether you are running an errand or going for a run. >> everyday activities are places where people worry, whether they might be next, but they might be the next individual targeted by hate

who they are, how they look where they're from. >> who they love. we have been to this epidemic of anti-asian hate for the year and a half here and what we have seen has really worked is for people to feel empowered to come forward to talk about what has happened with them to them friends and families and community members to do the same. bond established a racial justice bureau but says more work needs to be done. >> both in terms of reporting hate crimes and preventing hate crimes feelings of hate. >> turn the speech turned to hate incidents on the way to becoming hate crimes. there are many places in between where we can intervene and prevent hate from getting to that place by the attorney general indicated that reported hate crimes for up 30% in california last year. >> he was quick to point out that more than half of hate crimes are not identified or investigated to such indicating plenty of work still needs to be done. dan

beautiful weather down inside the peninsula. those temperatures warming up in the 70's tomorrow should be a gorgeous day. santa clara may very well be the warmest part of the bay area tomorrow with some of those downslope winds about 75 in gamble about 74 degrees in san jose 75 in morgan hill about 70 in pleasanton 74 in union city gorgeous weather having to worry about so much fog overnight tonight into early tomorrow morning. so that's some good news. just lot of sunshine coming our way and only a patch or 2 of fog temperatures inland tomorrow looking very nice. watch out there, maybe a little bit of fog moving along the coastline late in the day that will keep those temperatures down mainly in the 50's and the 60's next couple days. warm sunshine continuing in the weekend. rain has ended for now. looks like the rain line moving well to the north, they're going to see that atmospheric river in the pacific northwest. they're going to be dealing with some flooding up there. but for now, we're going to keep things dry. maybe not only through the weekend but maybe the next couple weeks. i want san francisco museum of modern art is offering free admission to veterans and their families tomorrow free admission runs
