up and shipping it to all areas around the country overnight yeah. and they didn't waste any time. the cdc just yesterday approved it for kids between 5.11 years old. we know the bay area has been getting ready for some time in crawford. sarah stinson is live for us up in marin county with more on their plans on getting the shots out. sarah, good morning. >> reporting here at northgate mall, which is where there's a vaccine clinic and a flu clinic. all in one and starting on saturday. they're going to be able to start getting doses to kids. >> this is a huge this is a pivotal moment in the entire country. kids 5 to 11 years old. finally able to get the covid vaccine after pfizer was able to get their trials done and have an approved first by the fda and then secondarily by the cdc advisory committee. finally by the director of the cdc here, marine county. they've been making plans to
get the ball rolling they're still waiting for their approval from the county level. but once they do northgate mall will be one of the locations where you can get your kids the vaccine, the director of the cdc calls this a very monumental moment saying now 28 million youngsters across the country can get this protection against covid-19 and its variants pfizer already started shipping millions of pediatric shots to each state and 2 right here in the bay area. >> we were just talking with the health or a health officer and he tells us doctor matt willis tells us they got their shipment last night. they are ready to start handing out doses on saturday. a lot of parents have been anxiously waiting for this to their kids can gain that protection. well, some parents are still worried about the vaccine advisory committee of the cdc says and they encourage parents to ask questions, get
that knowledge. but they say the risk for getting covid outweighs any risk from getting the vaccine. let's hear now from doctor matt willis about the plans here in this the system is really teed up and ready to go. we've got vaccine appointments available starting early saturday. you know, we're still waiting for the western states finals. we don't have the final approval from red ctunted, even begin vaccinating our kids. >> we're expecting that to come today. appointments to start becoming available in the next 24 hours we're expecting if we do get that, that authorization by today. this is one site northgate shopping center starting on saturday will have about 400 appointments by appointment. only for children. it's also open for adults who want to get booster doses and flu shots will be mixing our kids and our adults and this set. >> and those other vaccine locations where you can get your kids that shot in the arm and that includes miller creek school that locations going to have a 1000 appointments a day. this one has 400
appointments a day starting on saturday and you have to make that appointment on line. kids will be getting 2 shots. each shot will be 3 weeks apart. and we've been talking about how we're going to make kids feel better about getting this shot. well, maybe here at northgate you can get a toy. some ice cream. watch a movie after you get that shot maybe on saturday because that's when it all starts. we have more information on our web site about the vaccine and counties plan as well as information about a town hall taking place in marin county tonight and that we can ask any questions. you may have with doctor matt willis. that information is on our website. kron 4 dot com reporting at northgate mall. sarah stinson, back to you, ok. thanks a lot, sarah. >> also new this morning, we've learned that walgreens is going to be giving out the covid vaccine for kids starting this saturday, though you can start scheduling your appointment today. and that's recommended because these appointments may go quickly. the times will be made available in the coming weeks
as well for other dates down the road as more doses for the vaccine for kids comes in and cvs is going to start giving out shots to the little kids today to starting sunday. 200 locations. >> in california and they to james are accepting appointments. now kids have to be accompanied by an adult. obviously 5 to 11 year-olds. you have to walk them in and give consent for them to get the covid shot. and san francisco is going to be vaccinating kids starting on saturday, too. they're rolling out the shots for kids at a 100 sites. doctors offices pharmacies, community health clinics neighborhood school vaccine clinics as well. like unified that district are going to have 4 clinics and those are some of the dates and times to start. we have a whole list of everything on kron 4 dot com. so if you want to get your kid vaccinated and you live anywhere. the bay area. we've got the info you need. >> and in the east bay with contra costa county health officials saying that they will be holding a town hall this thursday discussed the county's plan for vaccinating
children there. they say the vaccines could be available as early as this coming saturday at county run clinics. but they add that parents should check with their child's doctor or local pharmacy just to double check and make sure. >> let's go to our team coverage now around the bay of the little kids shots. and when they can and it looks like first up is going to be santa clara county. yeah. so as early as 2 this afternoon. we could see kids getting their shots. will tran is standing by with a look at that live from the fairgrounds there. hey, well. >> good morning, james and ari, i'm just sitting here day dreaming about being back in kindergarten with mandatory naps. you know, when you daydream you look out in space. so that's what i was doing. going back and look at this. they brought the kids stories because you have a new clientele. up until today. they only dealt with adults and older kids. but now kids between 5.11 years old, starting at 1 o'clock. >> through 8 o'clock. you can come down here and they -pbrought this out to lower the stress level and they plan to

watch your travels up and down highway one. oh, one on the peninsula. highway one at the coastline. dense fog advisory in the salinas valley as well as the central valley and pockets of our inland valleys also affected by some of that lower visibility this morning. as for the day ahead. we've got the sunshine and then the evening tonight comes along with rainfall. so today really is offering up a bit of everything gray, but dry start sunshine and 70's towards the middle of the day and then after midnight tonight, some rainfall pushes through most significant for the north bay starting to see less and less totals. the further south in the bay. you get and it's going to be a brief bit of rain moving in quickly moving out really quickly too, from midnight on until around 05:00am to 06:00am tomorrow morning to expect some areas of widespread rain. a few showers hanging on after that. so this is one for early risers that is going to be making for a wet commute to work and then some damp conditions after that skies really looking nice towards the afternoon. tomorrow. so the shower activity pushes and

they go with james as if the drinks couldn't get any sweeter. okay. now, this next story kind of blew my mind. what i saw the headline of this morning. college costs increased what almost a 170% since 1980 that. same. >> the 4 people 22 to 27 years old. has only increased 19% in that same to unite james are benefiting from that system where is our children are going to run into a situation where they're going to be saddled with more college that and kind of the same tuition room board books, applies in-state public school costs about 27,800 per year. now private colleges are about 55,800 of the pandemic has slowed some of the stout. but it's not static. the median income for young people about $45,000. if you have a degree, $30,000 a year. if you don't and a study that was released also said that children in kindergarten come from poor
families. they're not. this keeping up with the fact kids who are coming from wealthy families in kindergarten. and again with the same kind of test scores our college system are not cars. are college. systems are expensive, but education system k through 12. it's not really working. it's very dysfunctional. so i'm excited to see biden spending plans to include education costs. yeah, we do something to get that down so well. >> we'll look forward to that. meanwhile, bad news once again for winemakers. we've got not only fires and droughts have been dealing with in that supply crunch down in various ports. but you're now talking shortage of bottles. what more can go wrong. >> yeah, we know there's a supply chain crunch. i thought i would hit home with some of our favorite urime acres right now and say you may not be getting the line you want next year or it may be because there's a glass shortage in the world and china and crew make a lot of gas that united states consumes small weiner's just aren't able to get the orders and fast enough. so

that there are other places. the district could cut before impacting students and teachers in about for men. >> from levels of administration and management. that may be are directly impacting students at this moment, perhaps special projects that can be paused until such a time as grants can be found to us and that cuts to schools or schools having to make the decisions around which position to cut only exacerbates the trauma that we've been so. >> the state of california has offered 30 million dollars in grants to help offset the district over the next 6 weeks. there's going to be some public hearings on this matter and then a final plan has to be submitted to the state by december 15th. >> it is 9.26. coming up on the kron 00:00am morning news, the walnut creek city council unanimously votes to ban the sale of flavored tobacco and vaping products. we'll tell you what city leaders say motivated them to pass

areas in the 50's and santa rosa, one of our last spots holding on to the upper 40's talking about tonight's rain and even more rain in the rest of your forecast all still to come back to rain so that got some good news. a hot spot we're following in milpitas. >> they just cleared the lanes there. so as you're traveling along 8.80 say leandro from to 38 down in milpitas to 37. it will take you about 30 minutes to make that drive because of that accident there heading into the city. now down to a little under 21 minutes for your drive time there still got a little delay along the overpass as you're traveling the golden gate bridge heading from the north bay into the city soon as you get to the tolls about a 25 minute drive for you. richmond sandra fell as you're heading out of richmond, a little under 12 minute. and let's check out the san mateo bridge that fog starts to roll across a little under 14 minutes with low visibility. so drive slow darya. james, back to you. tonight. 31 seat is another thing i when i was a kid, you know, pens and paper and we it was cigarettes which we would now they have these vapes.
yep, that seems so easy and so healthy and feel less harmful. but that's not necessarily the right. and so a lot of parents have been pushing for what walnut creek is now doing. yeah. of. >> so to ban the sale of vaping products. we have kron four's, camila barco standby from walnut creek with the story. >> one, it reeks mayor found vaping as the number one problem at the local middle and high schools. city leaders say it was about time that chains, the idea came after the mount diablo school district recommended city leaders. >> enact a ban on the flavored tobacco vaping products, city council members heard school leaders and unanimously agree to prohibit the selling of flavored tobacco and electronic smoking devices with in city limits. according to the mayor, a state survey found 92% of students using tobacco reported using a flavored product during the meeting. staff also reported nearly 9 out of every 10 adult smokers, try smoking by the age of 18 in california. it is
illegal to sell vaping products to anyone under the age of 21 and again, they shouldn't be selling this to anybody under 21 anyway. >> but children are still getting it. and that was the problem. anything that is tobacco related shouldn't be sold the people that are under 21 the problem is that there's a lot of ways they can get it through having adults. but for them it's just available everywhere. so it's not going to be available for sale in walnut creek in 2019 contra costa county enacted its own ban. >> to not allow the sale of flavored vaping products and electronic devices that ordinance only covers the county's unincorporated areas on a creek span is more restrictive than federal and state laws. however, there are exceptions for adult, only who cut tobacco businesses. >> the ban goes into effect in 5 months and this gives businesses enough time to understand and comply with the
rules and walnut creek. camila barco kron 4 news. >> and here's something else that is meant to protect kids in the east bay. the city of pleasanton has approved an ordinance requiring gun owners to keep their guns in a locked container or keep a trigger lock on them and the goal of this is to keep kids from getting a hold of guns according to a study, more than half of gun owners don't look up their guns and another report shows that there were more than 350 unintentional shootings by children in 2020 alone. other bay area citpes have already enacted similar ordinances including palo alto and san jose. >> some breaking news from overnight in the south bay where police now are investigating 2 fatal car crashes in san jose. the most recent happened a little before 6 o'clock this morning, a truck and a motorcyclist got tangled up here. north 10th street and commercial street writer on the motorcycle died at the scene. police say the morning commute was impacted for a bit and they still
suggest use alternate routes to they get that completely cleared out. meanwhile, the first crash happened just before midnight right near the intersection of campbell avenue in prospect, road. in that case, a car crashed into a tree. one person died. police haven't released much else about that accident. but we'll stay on top of the story. >> its 9.34 and today the man accused of a deadly shooting in gilroy is going to be arraigned in court benjamin calderon was arrested on saturday after a shooting that happened at a halloween party and it was at the home of a gilroy city council member police were called there becauhe a fight broke out and shots were fired. 4 people were injured and one of them later died. >> another big story this morning. the las vegas raiders have released wide receiver henry ruggs, the 3rd from their roster. he's now facing multiple felony charges because of a 2 car crash that happened in las vegas. >> a woman died in that accident. and police say that ruggs is car a chevrolet i'm sorry, a corvette, a rear
ended another car. i i can hardly tell which cars which and this the vaccine was clearly. >> a bad accident. there were flames when officers got to the scene. and they say that ruggs appeared impaired when they got there, the raiders drafted him in 2020 in the first round and his attorney released a statement saying in part, you can see on your screen, quote. >> on behalf of our client henry ruggs the 3rd. we are conducting our own investigation as of this writing and ask everyone to reserve judgment until all of the facts are gathered. well, to pittsburgh. residents accused in a murder that spans multiple northern california counties appeared in the fairfield courtroom. jessica and mark o quinton the didn't enter pleas in the murder of a lonnie bo champe. the investigation into her death is still ongoing. but officials are accusing jessica canton, the now of killing both champ just as brother marko faces charges of being an accessory to murder and for parole violation. we also
learned that won parra peralta who you see here and airman out of travis air force base may not be facing charges after all, he was initially arrested on suspicion of accessory to murder. but the chief deputy da says that he may be considered now more of a witness. then a suspect. champe was reported missing saturday night after leaving a halloween party in sacramento with 2 men that police later identified as active duty air force members, police say she was killed in fairfield, but ay in monterey county. >> for the second time in the history of the san francisco police department, an off-duty officer is charged with homicide. this is according to san francisco's de a chase dean and here's body camera footage from the shooting which happened in 2017. it shows officer kenneth che shot shawn moore and he was responding to a noise complaint, but more was unarmed when he was shot and he ended up dying nearly 3 years later and the coroner ruled his death a homicide.
the san francisco police officers association released a statement defending the officers actions saying that they support change right to defend himself against the charges that stem from that shooting. >> all right. now to a story that could impact you and hopefully we'll have a happy ending for you. today. state leaders are going to try and fix the shipping problems that have delayed your orders and made things more expensive here in recent weeks. you're looking at video from ports in southern california will today's hearing is a joint hearing at the state capitol talking about the congestion problems we're seeing at these ports and how best to fix it. so that hearing is expected to start any minute now. it was set scheduled to begin at 9.30. we'll keep an eye on it. let you know what they decide. hopefully they can get rid of that logjam down there. you can get the stuff you've been waiting for this. >> it's been like daria months. i think it's out the ships is not dock. happening right now. check this out. what you can do. skaters are back at the ice rink in union square. this is a live look.
