>> reporter: developing news now in the search for the missing malaysian flight 370. malaysian officials say these newest satellite images show around 122 possible pieces of debris in the "southern indian ocean." >> reporter:it's not certain if the objects are part of the missing airliner. but authorities say it's a big part of moving forward in the search, which intensified today.

atika shubert shows us the extreme weather conditions search crews are facing in the search for m-h 370. >> reporter:this is what search teams looking for flight 370 are up against. >> reporter:strong winds and massive swells. as high as 5 meters. even china's ice- breaker, the snow dragon, struggles against these waves. >>"it's one of the most hostile regions in the world. this is what we call the roaring 40s there are always strong winds, big waves because there is no land to interfere with wind that generates waves." >>"these are ocean gliders." >> reporter:chari pattiaratchi, a professor of coastal oceanography, teaches in perth, now the hub of search operations. he uses these satellite- controlled gliders to study the currents of the indian ocean. using that data, he's created a model to plot a potential debris field. half >>"the main current here is the antarctic circumpolar current. it's the largest in the world in terms of
