good morning. expect plenty sunshine today. we will get right to weather and traffic beginning with mary. i can see the photos already of the sunrise, beautiful. >> it's gorgeous. get ready for a lovely day across the bay area on this veterans day. we are looking at fantastic weather as we honor and celebrate our veterans and all of the events going on around the bay area. you see clear skies as we start our day in san francisco and our temperatures in the city looking at 54 degrees now, 50 in concord, oakland 53 and a chilly start in santa rosa with patchy dense fog in the mid 40s. let's take you through the day. we are going to see plenty sun, coast low to mid 60s, around the bay mid to upper 60s and low 70s inland. daytime highs are a little bit above average and a little bit warmer compared to yesterday. let's check with gianna. you are tracking that crash in the south bay. it's causing significant
delays out of san jose north 101 near old oakland road where a couple cars are tangled. injuries are reported so you have a lot of activity on scene. look at all the red on our censors. speeds are dipping down to five miles per hour as you head through and back up looks at least beyond the 280, 680 connector. i will zoom out and show you the speeds as you work on 87 or 280. those are great alternates to 101. try that if you want to avoid the brake lights. travel times are an hour north bound 101 from san jose to sfo. we have new video of pricey gas found right here in the bay area. >> you see drivers are having to pay nearly $6 a gallon to fill up tanks. >> we will get to joycelyn moran with a look at gas prices in south san francisco.
it's not easy for any of us. >> reporter: it really isn't. i am sure we all have had similar feeling of noticing the amount it takes to fill our tank is just rising and rising. at the valero station on airport boulevard, the price is $5.19. this is not the worst in a we have seen. take a look at this video. that is nearly $6 at a shell station in san francisco. this is on 4th and bryant. according to aaa, the average gas price in california is $4.65, highest of any state and is much higher than national average of $3.42. even that national average is higher than a year ago. aaa says it was $2.11 a year ago. high gas prices come as we approach the holidays when people are expected to travel and aaa expects traveling to be close to prepandemic numbers. as far as gas prices, a new
forecast from the federal government predicts crude prices will hold steady and drop back down next year. >> it's going to be messy. 53million traveling, that's estimate for aaa, most by car. even with high gas prices pain at the pump is not being translated into people not going. if you plan properly remember we are living, working, learning remotely these days so there is no crush to have to fly or travel on the wednesday before thanksgiving. >> reporter: in the next 30 minutes we will tell you more about what average gas prices are in cities specifically in the bay area. i am joycelyn moran, kpix5. >> get ready to pay up. thanks. if you are sick of the high gas prices it might be a good time to go electric. in 20 minutes, what san jose just launched that macon vince you to go green. 44 positive covid cases within cal football team forced
pac-12 to postpone the game against usc. >> one expert says some of the players should not have even been tested in the first place. >> i have zero panic whatsoever as a public health person, as infectious disease doctor of 44 healthy people who are fully vaccinated who may have a little virus in their nose on a highly sensitive test. it is not an outbreak. it does not mean they got sick. it does not mean that the vaccines don't work. it means our public health strategy in this case was off and they were doing mass testing of people who didn't need it. >> cal's athletic director says more than 99% of the team is vaccinated but everyone had to submit to a covid test even if they did not show sytoms. one player says the university's health services told the team they could be arrested for refusing to test. >> we have reached to the city of berkeley and university for
clarification on the testing policy but have not yet heard back. in a statement released yesterday berkeley says it followed cal osha's guidance. health experts in south bay trying to clear confusion about who is eligible for the booster shot. >> i think what the public heard was i have to be 65. otherwise i shouldn't get a booster. that's not correct. that's not correct. we know that protection fades from the original vaccine series. it is important to get a booster. >> the doctor says if it's been six months since you were fully vaccinated, you can get your booster shot. i am anne makovec at the live news desk. it is of course veterans day. let's go to washington, dc where a ceremony is just getting underway. you can see from these live pictures we have helicopters in the sky and president biden is about to lay a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier. there we are right now.
this is a procession that's going on, a wider view of arlington national cemetery. the tomb of the unknown soldier has been a final resting place for three unknown u.s. service members. it's also really a symbolic grave for unidentified american soldiers and those who were never found. any minute now, president biden is expected to show up there at the tomb. the tomb, by the way, was the site of some historic activity over the last couple days. for the first time, the public was able to walk on to the plaza and lay flowers before that sacred memorial site. it was certainly a rare chance for the public to get close to the tomb of the unknown soldier. it is an annual tradition for the president to lay a wreath and we are going to be continuing to follow that ceremony throughout the morning for you. back to you. >> thank you so much. let's go live to justin
andrews at the uss hornet museum in alameda where there will be special exhibits today to honor our veterans. >> reporter: we are live inside the hornet this morning on this veterans day. the ceremony will take place right here. i call your attention to this plane. this is one of two world wore ii planes and this sank in lake michigan which i am told helped preserve it for 50 years and it was recovered in '95. in a matter of hours there will be a ceremony at the uss hornet thanking our veterans on this veterans day in alameda. there will be a ceremony at 11:00 and there is a special exhibit created by walking ghost of black history featuring bios of prominent black female firsts in america's military. there will be a special tribute to the former secretary of state as well, late colin powell. the exhibit is all day. veterans will be allowed on to the ship for free.

in the east bay a massive catalytic converter theft ring has been busted thanks to a tip from a livermore resident. the person noticed a suspicious truck and snapped a picture of the license plate and reported it to the police. >> officers located the arrest, they had four catalytic converters freshly cut. >> officers followed the truck that led to two houses with stolen goods, one in placer and one in stockton. 30 people were taken into custody. fox theater canceled its latest show after a woman was shot on the street outside. chopper 5 was over the scene just after 2:30 in the afternoon. the victim is expected to recover. all time low was set to perform and issued a statement saying refunds will be given.
if you were planning to fly for the holidays, you might want to get there extra early. facing a shortage of security screeners. get to the airport extra early at least 90 minutes before your flight to avoid being stranded. tsa check points are not longer than usual but could change when the federal vaccine mandate deadline becomes in effect the monday before thanksgiving. >> we are anticipating it will be amplified further for a number of reasons, one which is potentially the vaccine mandate. >> last month reps told congress only 60% of tsa screeners were vaccinated. new, teams of scuba divers are making progress cleaning trash in lake tahoe. >> the under water effort led by clean up the lake kicked off last may. divers have counted more than

peninsula 68, san m ateo for the south bay, 70 for sunnyvale, 72 for morgan hill. inland east bay, 71 concord, 72 pleasure and hill, low 70s for the tri valley. 67 in san francisco, 64 in daly city, 67 alameda, 68 oakland. north bay, low to mid 70s. 73 in santa rosa and 74 for ukiah. the seven-day forecast, san francisco, oakland, san jose, you see a little bit above average as we head through friday and our weekend and a cool down as we look to next week. inland east bay, north bay, coast, slightly warmer as we look to friday and our weekend, looks great for the weekend ahead and then cooling it down as we look to next week. wednesday is the coolest day out of our extended forecast. let's check with gianna for a look at traffic. how are the roadways? a little busy in some spots. brake lights 101 due to a crash, altamont.
plus we have major bart delays. the san francisco line there is a major problem on the equipment there. there are delays on the line for the dublin practices ant ton direction due to the equipment problem and ten minute delay. if you are taking bart as you head out, you will see delays depending on which route you are on. ace rail, muni, cal are on time with no delays. headed along the south bay if ready to take 101 north they cleared a crash at oakland road. it was blocking lanes but the damage is done. this is extending almost to 880 where the 101, 880 connect in the area. use 87 or 280. stick with those freeways as alternates. it is lightly traveled because of the veterans holiday.

day. let's check with gianna. i know you have been tracking the south bay and that crash. they just cleared it out of lanes. 101 north bound near old oakland road. we had a crash involving a couple vehicles with injuries. everything is cleared but it is still slow as you go through, brake lights from about of 280, 680 connector to 880. checking travel times, west bound 80 is looking good, highway 4 as well. west bound 580, a lot of brake lights out of the altamont pass 205 to 680. give yourself about 35 minutes. commute out of the south bay is looking better now that the crash is cleared north 101 hellyer to sfo, about 47 minutes. stuck in traffic, you are wasting a lot of gas and that's not good. let's go to joycelyn moran who is live from a gas station. gas prices are soaring.
what's it looking like where you are? >> reporter: still rising and honestly it hurts to just look at the prices. take a look at the valero gas station. $5.19 for a gallon. this is airport boulevard in south san francisco. look at the averages in california. according to aaa it's $4.65. bay area numbers are a bit higher. in san francisco it's $4.85 and in oakland it's $4.77 and in san jose it's $4.78. if we look at this shell station in san francisco that is nearly $6 for a gallon of gas. this is on 4th and bryant. these high prices come as we approach the holidays when we know many people are going to be traveling to see loved ones especially after a difficult holiday season last year due to the pandemic. aaa expects more than 53 million people will travel, a 13% increase from last year. prices are putting pressure on
the white house to act. >> we have tools in our tool belt that we can potentially address this with. >> reporter: experts say there is only so much the president can do. a new forecast from federal government predicts crude prices will hold steady and drop back down last year. we told you that the average in california is $4.65. the highest was in 2012 at $4.67. we are two cents away from that. personally that is a record i do not want to see the state break. we have our eye on veterans day ceremony going on across the country. a live look at arlington, virginia. president biden is set to lay a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier. he is running a little bit late. that was supposed to happen a half an hour ago. you see the ceremony has begun
there near the tomb of the unknown soldier there in the arlington national cemetery. actually this is live pictures near the world war ii memorial i believe and basically there are ceremonies going on all around arlington national cemetery right now today as well as the vietnam veterans memorial. this comes on heels of an historic two days at the cemetery for the first time in nearly a century members of the public were able to walk on the plaza of the tomb of the unknown soldier and lay flowers before the memorial site. we will keep our eye on the ceremonies going on in arlington, virginia. new developments in a robbery that turned deadly at an oakland starbucks. a jury convicted two men of murder and manslaughter for the crime. 34-year-old research engineer was killed in december 2019. he had been working on his laptop at the starbucks on new
year's eve when the two men stole it from him. they say he tried to chase the thieves but was hit by the get away car. reed was convicted of second degree murder. wiggins was convicted of voluntary manslaughter. sentencing is set for next year. rittenhouse's defense plans to call several more witnesses today after rittenhouse took the stand in his trial. he says he acted in self defense in shootings that left two dead at a protest in kenosha wisconsin last year. during cross examination the prosecution questioned his self defense claims. the judge berated prosecution for questioning his silence until this time. >> don't get brazen with me. close to or over the line on commenting on defendant's pretrial silence which is a well known rule. >> rittenhouse faces up to life in prison if convicted. in the bay area an early investor in theranos says his
investment relationship with the company soured over time. retired houston money manager put 1.2 million into theranos in 2006. yesterday he took the stand in the trial. he testified that he and holmes talked by phone often at first but by 2010 she stopped taking calls. when he tried to pull his investment, there was no way to do it. >> this goes along with the prosecution and other evidence have shown us, when people start asking questions of holmes she shuts them down. >> he says the relationship improved dramatically in 2013 when the company was getting good press and needed more money. so he invested another 100,000 but by 2015 he says he was being ignored again and was told the next response he got would be from theranos lawyers. the justice department is suing uber accusing it of over charging disabled riders. suit centers on wait time fees.
uber starts charging two minutes after the driver arrives at the pick up spot. d.o.j. allegeds that's unfair for people who need more time. this seeks for riders over charged and ada modification to the wait policy. in a statement uber said it did change policy last week to automatically wave wait time fees for riders who certify they are disabled and previously had a policy of refunding them on request adding we fundamentally disagree that policies violate ada and will keep improving products for everyone to izzoly move around. losing out on billions in federal funds all because the labor department says california is ineligible. sacramento bee reports about $12 billion in grants in jeopardy. this is over a 2013 state pension law.

this morning. >> reporter: we are. we are showing you the exhibit i have been telling you about all morning. this is the exhibit that will be on display inside the uss hornet. this is a special exhibit that will be on display and it was created by the walking ghost of black history featuring bios of prominent black female firsts in america's military. there will be a special tribute to also the former secretary of state the late colin powell. we talked to one of the creators of the exhibit. i want you to listen to it. >> throughout america's military history, there has always been strides, accomplishments, and those who have endured who actually become the first. so we looked based on veterans day itself, let's bring to the forefront the african-american female accomplishments in the united states military.
that's what today's exhibit is all about. >> reporter: the actual ceremony is underway at 11:00. that's later this morning. there will be local politicians also in attendance. >> justin, thank you. other events honoring veterans being held across the area. >> let's run through these. santa rosa fire department hosting veterans day open house for veterans looking to pursue career in the fire service. the fire department is on circadian way and the event starts at 9:00 this morning. in san francisco museum of modern art, vets can get up to four free tickets. all you need is proof of eligibility. veterans and members of the military were given court side seats to the warriors game. look at how excited they were to be there. it was made possible thanks to

low 70s. let's walk you through the day with micro climates, mid to upper 60s around the bay and low 70s inland with the sun. in san francisco 67 for a high temperature as we head through our afternoon with that sunshine. east bay shoreline, oakland good morning, topping out at 68 for a high temperature with that sun. san jose, 70, a pleasant day ahead in san jose with that sun. high pressure is taking over and in control for us not just today but through the next several days. you see pa sick northwest, they are lucky enough to get the rain. this ridge of high pressure blocking storm systems from coming our way. as we take you hour by hour, you see the sunshine as we go through the afternoon. 63 in pacifica for the peninsula, 68 in san mateo, south bay 70 in santa clara, san jose, 72 morgan hill this
afternoon. inland east bay, 71 concord, 72 pleasure ability hill, low 70s for the tri valley. around the bay from 67 in san francisco, 64 daly city. east bay shoreline 67 in alameda and close to 70 for san leandro. north bay, low to mid 70s, 73 in santa rosa, 72 napa valley, 74 for ukiah and 75 for st. helena. above average temperatures today, tomorrow, and through the weekend. looking good if you have those outdoor plans for the weekend. it does get cooler as we look to next week with more clouds. inland east bay, north bay, coast, gradual warm up friday and into our weekend with plenty sunshine. then we are looking at cooler temperatures for next week. we were hoping to maybe see a few showers as we look to next week. at this point it's just bringing cooler temperatures and more clouds especially as we look to next tuesday and
wednesday. let's check with gianna for a look at traffic and how are roadways shaping up? a couple hot spots. they turned metering lights on at the bay bridge plaza. it doesn't look as bad as it typically does due to the veterans day holiday. parking meters are still being enforced. keep that in mind if you are parking anywhere. you won't see brake lights at the toll plaza. bulk of delays on upper deck of the bay bridge so metering lights turned onto help relieve traffic a bit as folks make their way into san francisco. if you plan on rolling across the bay bridge, give yourself a few extra minutes. it is getting busy for the thursday morning ride. through san francisco everything else looks pretty good. it's looking better in the south bay as well. we were tracking pretty significant delays from an earlier crash. everything is cleared out of lanes, still sluggish north bound 101 from 280, 680 to
about 880 and then a few brake lights in the mountain view area. usual stuff for the altamont pass, it started later this morning. so if you are a super commuter, the commute started at least around 5:30 and we are tracking brake lights out of tracy as we get onto 580. travel times are not bad. south bay commute 41 minutes from san jose to sfo. if taking the dublin interchange area, things are okay for the most part. heads up if you are taking public transit, bart delays are in effect. check that schedule before you head out the door. most public transit agen are on a regular schedule. you should be good to go for the most part. >> thank you. one of the last remaining roller skating rinks in the bay area is closing its doors. golden skate in san ramone has been around for 50 years. >> people are lacing up their skates to say good-bye. turning back on the lights in may after restrictions gave
owners a glimmer of home but the negative financial impact is forcing them to close its doors. >> hearing that this place might close really breaks me down. >> i am heart broken, absolutely heart broken. >> it means a lot to me because this is a place that feels like another home. >> the owner says he will keep the rink open through the holidays but has not determined the last day yet. usually when you hear about covid shots you think about people getting them. >> apparently marine mammals need protection too. eight sea otters received the covid vaccine to protect them from the virus. a vet says the process only takes a few seconds and the animals were good patients despite no treats at the end. >> they don't get a sucker and don't get a bandaid either. they've not missed a beat or a meal. >> otters at the monterey bay aquarium have remained covid free but that wasn't the case

everybody who has served. live to arlington virginia where the president is late but still set to lay a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier. that was supposed to happen about an hour ago. we are keeping our eye on that. the tomb has been a final resting place for three unknown u.s. service members and a symbolic grave for all unidentified american soldiers and those never found. a live look at the world war ii memorial on the national mall. a procession of service members around the area got underway an hour ago. they are paying tribute to the more than 16 million americans who served in world war ii. there will be similar services at the world war i memorial, u.s. navy memorial, vietnam veterans memorial throughout the day. we'll be following it. i am joycelyn moran live at the valero gas station on
airport boulevard in south san francisco. you see prices are continuing to rise. at this station it is $5.19. it isn't the most expensive. look at this shell in san francisco on 4th and bryant, nearly $6 for a gallon of gas. according to aaa the average price is $4.65, highest of any state and much higher than national average of $3.42. still even that is higher than a year ago. back then it was $2.11 just a year ago. high prices come as we approach the holidays when we know many people will be traveling to see loved ones especially after a difficult holiday season last year due to the pandemic. new forecasts from the federal government predicts crude prices will hold steady and drop back down next year. it looks like we will continue to have to deal with these high
