lane. we have this other accident on 101 southbound at 80. once you get off the bay bridge. e me bak ls. thin d arndattsat the bay toll plaza. we'll keep an eye to see if that has any residual effect. major developments on the coronavirus. opening vaccine appointments to kids for a breaking announcement from pfizer. we have hive avenue live team coverage with everything you need to know. >> live in our newsroom with that possible break-through. jocelyn, what have you learned? >> yeah, pfizer just announced this morning its new drug significantly reduces the risk of covid-19 hospitalization and death. the drug maker says in recent times its pill cut the risk of hospitalization and death by nearly 90%. this is given within three games of the. and pfizer says they have been testing the drug on adults who

contracted covid-19 and who are considered at high risk of illness from the virus. the pills was taken twice a day for five days. it will submit data as soon as possible as it seeks authorization for the pill to be used in the u. s. take a listen. >> within three days of the symptoms, you have now 89% protection from deceased leading to hospitalization with our medicines and the data indicates 100% profession from death. >> currently remdesivir is the only antiviral approved for treatment of covid-19. with pfizer's bill pill they hope this could be available in the next few months. we'll be staying on top of this, of course. for now live in the newsroom, kpix five. and happening today. in east bay, covid shot appointments for kids are opening up. >> kpix five justin andrews is live at a clinic in martinez. justin? good morning.

health leaders are telling us that a man for this kid's version of the pfizer vaccine is pretty high because parents have been eagerly wanting to get their young children from this virussable. when it comes to this vaccine for these young kids. this is about a one-third the dosage of those that are given to teens and adults. kids five to eleven must get two doses of at least thee weeks apart for that maximum protection. contra costa county says it has about 20,000 doses of the kid's vaccine right now. other healthcare providers and pharmacies are stocking up as we speak. about 87% of residents ages 12 to 15 have gotten at least one dose. local doctors urging parents to get their kids vaccinated. when you compare the. what i have found is it has been difficult to predict how this virus is going to be

contained. the delta variant can. now, for a perspective this morning, healthloders say there are more than 90,000 kids that fall in that five to 11 age group. live in martinez, i'm justin andrews. kpix five. we spoke with some parents in marin county while some have concerns with vaccinating their kids. others say they can hardly wait. >> you know, at a certain point, we will have to get all the children vaccinated just like we asked all the adults to get vaccinated. i worry about the children, especially the younger kids who have so much more development and growth that they have yet to go through. >> what is meant for them at four and a half to have spent half their life almost in a pandemic. so kind of excited to get past this. >> for everything you need to know about getting your child vaccinated including where to

it is comedy. that is all it is. >> the new documentary was filmed during the pandemic when chapelle started recording shows in the neighbor's cornfield in ohio. it talks about issues of race, the george floyd killing and the pandemic. a veteran sfpd officer ask in custody on suspicion of robbing a san matteo drugstore for drugs. the robbery was reported wednesday night at the san matteo rite aid. sergeant kohl was arrested and booked in the jail on charges of second degree robbery and resisting an officer. he was allegedly off duty at the time of his arrest. he has been with sfpd for nearly 30 years. the same dna technology has been used to solve another case. >> the rapist has been identified and arrested. >> to find out that he is here on the street is -- i am still

in disbelief. >> jd wallace was just booked into the county jail. he is suspected of being a serial rapist seen in these sketches that targeted three women from 2013 to 2014 walk ago long i-80. the arrest came from authorities' use of investigative genetic genealogy. he was booked without bail. he is scheduled to be arraigned on monday. in a statement, sacramento district attorney ann schubert has had to say. it is powerful. an investigative tool for violent crimes that have grown cold because traditional investigative methods are unable to solve the case. san jose police have made arrests after breaking up an alleged gambling ring. during the process, they also took down an illegal marijuana grow. police say they got a tip about an illegal gambling operation coming out of an industrial building on rogers avenue this summer. when they searched it, they found 300 pounds of marijuana with a street value of ever

next report. thanks to its new bill avenue pill. we have team coverage all morning. and contra costa county with what parents need to know. 20,000 doses of the kid's pfizer vaccine has arrived here in contra costa county. parent who is have been waiting so long to get their kids vaccinated starting today. 92,000 kids here follow that five to 11 aim group. and health officials say they would like to see high vaccination numbers with that age group in the weeks and months to come. this age group is one-third the dosage that is typically given to teens and adults. kids five to 11 must get those two doses at least three weeks

the company has been testing the drug on adults who contracted covid and were considered at high risk of severe illness. pfizer says an independent board of experts monitoring a clinical trial recommended that the company stop its study early. that is because the drug's effectiveness had become so convincing. this morning, pfizer says it will submit its data as soon as possible. as it seeks authorization for the pill to be used in the u. s. and we're talking about hopefully. these medicines can be available. a larger reach next year. >> the hope is the treatment can be available in the next few months. the drug maker received clearance for a similar treatment. that version is under review by the usfda. we'll be staying on top of this. live in the newsroom, kpix five. jocelyn, thanks. 19 states are suing to stop president biden's new workplace vaccine rules. the president announced employers with 1100 or more workers will have until january

as much money if they don't open on thanksgiving. >> most retailers say they would be open again the day after thanksgiving. black friday with extended hours. new this morning, another walgreen's store is closing in the bay area. this time in berkeley. the store is at the intersection of san pablo and ashby aver is in southwest berkeley. it is set to close on november 17th . a city councilman who represents the area says the shutdown will have a serious impact since many low income residents who have rely on the pharmacy there. the next walgreen's is more than a mile away. walgreen's is closing five stores. shoplifting prompted the decision. some critics prompted to a filing by walgreen's with the filing securities and exchange commission two years ago is that says they plan to close 200 stores.
