covid conscious. how you can have fun while staying safe. in the north bay, watch for mountain lions. back to back sightings. chinese american world war ii veterans finally getting recognition they deserve. how they are being honored. good morning. it is friday october 29. i am amanda starrantino. >> i am anne makovec in for len. we are waking up to a weekend that the area has been waiting for all year long. we have live team coverage for what you need to know better the busy bay area weekend. we begin with justin andrews and final preps for outside lands. how is it looking out there? >> reporter: remember last year it was canceled because of covid concerns. we're not able to get inside the gates but i can show you the gates that are outside. this is a sign that they are ready to welcome the festival goers. inside all six stages are set across golden gate park. it's a good line up too.
the festival is sold out expecting to pool about 70,000 people each day. we are talking today, tomorrow, and sunday. if you are in the area, make sure you have some patience. there are new vendors, almost 40 additional food options this year all at a time when the industry can use extra cash. line up is huge, vampire weekend, lizzo, glass animals, young thugs. people who live here say they're ready for the festival. >> it's a lot of joy after a long time of being cooped up. >> it's a 72 hour exciting event. obviously there is a trade off with not having park access but i think it is an important trade off. >> reporter: with the historic storms we saw last week, organizers say they didn't even know they were going to be able to have it but luckily they got everything in place and it is
happening. it kicks off today through sunday. justin andrews, kpix5. >> it is exciting. i am assuming it is sold out. do you have any on mae ter rket ops people are looking for a ticket? >> reporter: i don't know. they say it's sold out, so i will check. that's a good question. i will go in my car and look it up and see if we can find other options. >> we were wondering for ourselves. >> we'll check back with you in the next half hour. thanks. let's turn to mary lee with that weekend weather. will you need to dress up or get more jackets or whatever for the festival? jackets for sure. we are looking at cool temperatures. i know a lot of people are super excited about outside lands. if you are heading to golden gate park, dress warmly. we are talking low 60s today, upper 50s saturday and sunday withinly cloudy skies.
so y r that. here we gowelook to our daytime highs. we are looking at more clouds, seasonal, highs in 60s and 70s, low 60s along the coast, mid to upper 60s around the bay, 68 oakland. for the peninsula upper 60s to low 70s and daytime highs inland low to mid 70s this afternoon. let's check with gianna. i know it will be crowded for everyone heading to outside lands today and over the weekend. >> no doubt thousands of people every day, friday, saturday, sunday. plus it's halloween so you have all that as well. there are a lot of road closures. all roads west of park, cross over drive are shut down. bikes have access to limited areas and parking will be limited. how will you get there? muni. that's your best bet. they'll have extra service and
express service as well. you can take bart into san francisco and transfer to muni. if you are doing ride share or buses they'll be dropping off and picking up northside of irving. passenger loading loads are on south side of fulton. it is halloween weekend and health experts say it is okay for kids to trick or treat as long as you take extra safety measures. >> joycelyn moran is live at a house that's decorated for the ghouls and goblins. >> reporter: that's right. i will not lie. it's 5:00 in the morning and dark, and i am a little spooked out. these decorations are kid friendly. take a look at them. you see frankenstein, pumpkins. last night they had a monster mash party. take a look at the video, you see kids having a good time and families still having an opportunity to come in case you
missed it last night. they're having another dance party tonight and tomorrow night from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. and we know that families are looking forward to this halloween given that last year, there were more restrictions in place and health experts this year say it is safe to do tre long as safety measures are being taken. for one, they say avoid indoor parties and try to stay outdoors as much as possible. this is because as we know many kids are not yet eligible to get vaccinated. secondly, make sure you are wearing face coverings, especially if you are handing out candy and if you are trick or treating. take a listen to what health experts say. >> there is no way to predict the density of children who are going to come together and there is no way to know which households they're approaching, whether or not those adults are vaccinated or unvaccinated. >> reporter: experts also say with the costumes that come
with masks, that is not a replacement for face coverings that protect you against covid- 19. so make sure you have those with you as well. we'll have more tips from health experts to keep you, your kids, and your family safe. >> those decorations look great. thank you. new, two high schools in sonoma county are shut down because of a threat on social media. classes and activities are canceled after administrators reported a specific threat made via social media against laguna high campus. they say they're closing schools out of abundance of caution. we are one step closer to cdc making it official, recommendation for kids 5 to 11 to be vaccinated. that's expected next week. santa clara's department of public health is offering prizes for youth who make videos encouraging them to get
a shot. it's called 2021vax video contest. grades 6 to 12 at schools in one county are asking to post on instagram and tiktok. the winners get cash prizes, $1,500 for first place, 1,000 for second and $500 for third place. submissions will be accepted until november 15. for the second night, a rally at the in and out in pleasant hill supporting the burger chain's refusal to check vaccine cards like county required. it's not just in and out. contra costa is handing out fines to other businesses not following the rules. >> i think it's no restaurant's business if you are vaccinated. we are going to support the restaurant. we are leaving the state in about six months. >> inside put the mask on, walk through the door, take the mask off. how does that help? >> in and out says it will not
be vaccine police. its locations in contra costa closed for indoor dining and are open for drive through and take out to comply with records. monday indoor mask rules will be easing. alameda county says masks will no longer be required in certain indoor settings where everybody is fully vaccinated. that includes offices, gyms, fitness centers, employee commuter vehicles, indoor religious gatherings if there are 100 people or fewer. nearly 2,000 mental healthcare professionals at kaiser voted to authorize a strike. the union says vote came after kaiser rejected proposals to ease caseloads for psychologists, therapists, social workers. they say they need better staffing to abide by state law on follow up appointments. "we have to work together to address this challenge in a way that honors and rewards
employees and recognizes increasing difficulty members and customers face in paying for care." two mountain lion sightings alone in the north bay in the last two weeks. >> a woman saw one on the trail at shores. she took a snapshot of the animal lurking in the bushes. that follows a separate sighting at a neighborhood in santa rosa. true wild says the big cat less than a year old. it was frank will eyed and brought to sonoma county wildlife rescue for medical evaluation. >> his condition was really good. i doubt he would be doing that well on his own at this age, so i think he's been sort of helped out by his mom. >> the mountain lion was released to the wild and gps info shows he is back in the hills. good boy. movements will be monitored in hopes of finding out if he is reunited with his mother. >> hope so.

>> this saturday more than 100 chinese american world war ii veterans will be honored in sacramento. mary lee is joining us. you have been covering this story over the last few years. for you it is a personal story. it is for sure. chinese american world war ii areas from the bay area and sacramento will be receiving congressional gold medal, congress' highest honor of national appreciation. one of the veterans honored will be my grandfather. three years ago, san francisco supervisors were pushing to officially honor and celebrate chinese american world war ii veterans. i had the privilege of speaking to two heroes, both proud to be american. >> i am just as american as anybody else. it's just the color of the skin but i am as patriotic as any american. >> if i had to do it again, i'd
do it again. >> even during extreme racism against chinese americans with exclusion act in place, they felt it was their duty to fight for freedom. they served around the world and even formed chinese american squadrons like flying tigers 14th air service group. >> i think it's important that they're honored. the fact that we have so few world war ii veterans, it is very important that we recognize them while still alive. >> eventually congress did recognize chinese american world war ii veterans for their service and sacrifice, awarding them with congressional gold medal. >> 70 years is too late, you know. >> i spoke to my dad about my grandfather's service during world war ii. he shared the stories my grandpa told him before he passed away. >> he did tell me about the
time he was flying over europe and they were being shot at as h is a od time r u guys art praying they could get out alive. >> my grandfather was just in high school when he went to war, served in army air corps and was the only asian american in his unit. >> he was proud of being a service man. i remember going through his closet one time and i found his uniform. this is probably 15 years after the war. i remember putting on his jacket and all that stuff, you know. so i knew he was a sergeant. >> my family and i will be there saturday to represent my grandfather. we are incredibly proud of him and only wish he were still alive to see this moment. talking to my dad, i didn't know some of the stories, you know, what my grandfather went through during world war ii. we are so honored and out of
the 115 veterans who are honored tomorrow, only four will be there who are living. >> that is a shame. but something for your family to be so proud of. it goes to show it is never too late to do the right thing. >> a long time coming but what an incredible moment that will be for all of you. >> thank you. >> thank you for sharing that. >> it means so much. thank you. >> very cool to see your dad too. >> jim lee. we'll have more weather coming up but i will take you to the roadways because we have a lot going on. trouble spot west bound 37. there is a crash as you work near the vallejo area. a couple cars are tangled and blocking lanes near walnut avenue exit. give yourself extra time there. another crash near richmond san rafael bridge west on the marin side. you have at least one lane blocked. bay bridge toll plaza is good,
no delays. traffic is light for now but that will change. for outside lands, a lot of folks headed in for the event. golden gate bridge will likely be a busy ride. san mateo bridge is good, if you want to cross between hayward to the peninsula headed west bound which is the commute direction, it is looking good. 12 minutes. outside lands, muni is probably your best bet. you can take bart and transfer to muni. ride share and buses northside of irving will be loading and unloading zones. passenger loading zones on the south side of fulton. also it's halloween. a lot of trick or treaters will be out and about sunday. if you are driving around, take it slow. try not to pass cars in neighborhood areas. kids might be walking and crossing streets and running around. this is mary's pup dressed up for halloween and getting ready

again cooler saturday and for sunday. daytime highs, low 60s along the coast, low 70s for peninsula, 73 for south bay in santa clara, 74 san jose, inland east bay, 73 concord, 72 pleasant hill, mid 70s for tri valley. around the bay 67 in san francisco and alameda, 68 in oakland, san leandro. north bay, upper 60s to low 70s, topping out at 75 for a daytime high in clover dale. talking about the halloween forecast for sunday evening. it's going to be a chilly one so you will need that jacket. mid 50s along the coast, upper 50s for around the bay and low 60s inland for halloween evening. the seven-day forecast san francisco, oakland, san jose, temperatures will be cooler again saturday and for sunday. we are looking at rain returning monday and at this point for next thursday. inland east bay, north bay, coast, cooler. again there is that slight

festival is sold out but, yes, this morning i found a few tickets and they'll cost you about $44. organizers are expecting 70,000 people each day for the three day festival. vampire weekend, lizzo, glass animals, young thug. that's just to name a few. a lot more artists are hitting the stage. there are more food vendors too. many can use extra cash because they're recovering from the pandemic's financial falls. >> we are supporting the restaurants who have had a difficult last year and a half from covid. the best thing to do is buy some of their food and enjoy it. >> in celebration of having a festival in our city and being able to celebrate the best parts. >> reporter: there is a guide on our website for all of this. kpix.com. you can check there and make sure you have everything you need before you come to enjoy

this year health experts say it is safe to celebrate but with the health measures. look at what american academy of pediatrics says. they recommend limiting trick or treating to smaller groups, waiting turn to avoid large clusters in trick or treating and of course practicing good hygiene. health experts recommend avoiding indoor parties and stay outdoors. as we know many kids are not yet eligible to get their vaccine. >> it is not safe to hold an in number of children unmasked. i think not offering food and drink indoors is critically important to keep any type of indoor gathering safe. >> the house we are at, this was the outdoors monster mash party. they'll be doing it tonight and tomorrow from 7:00 to 8:00, 227 nadine street. of course they recommend that you do wear face coverings.

grounded flights and sent hundreds running out of the terminal and on to the tarmac. officials say they got a report of somebody with a gun in the terminal in terminal one around 7:30. no shots were fired and no weapons were recovered. one person was detained but didn't give out more details. airport operations are back to normal. that incident comes 24 hours after another attack on a flight attendant in mid air. a live look at sfo, there is now a call for most powerful transportation agency in u.s. to take action. the suspect who attacked american airlines flight attendant wednesday is banned from the airline. he punched her twice and broke her nose but the association of professional flight attendants wants faa and department of transportation to not only prosecute violators but ban unruly passengers from every airline. >> we need passengers to feel safe on board an aircraft, whether that is with the virus
or whether that is with knowing it is going to be safe and they're not going to be attacked or witness an attack that puts the airplane in jeopardy at 35,000 feet. >> the flight attendants association found a whopping 85% of the 5,000 flight attendants surveyed reported they have dealt with unruly passengers this year alone. today president biden meets with pope francis at the vatican. the white house says they'll talk about efforts to boost human dignity including ending pandemic and tackling climate crisis. before flying to italy the president made a visit to capitol hill. he had hoped to secure a deal to pass two bills that together cover infrastructure, climate change, childcare, and more. democrats are putting final touches on the president's $1.75 trillion build back better agenda. >> we understand it is 90% written. that 10% should hopefully be very quick to put together based on the framework that the president gave us. >> it is not clear if the
