[ laughter ] "isolate for five days then quarantine what do i do?" [ laughter ] did you guys hear about this amid a salmonella outbreak, the cdc has instructed people not to kiss or snuggle their chickens
[ laughter ] although, if you're kissing and snuggling chickens, i'm not sure salmonella is your biggest issue. i think -- [ laughter ] yeah >> steve: eggs >> jimmy: and when the news broke, dr. fauci was like, "well, my day just keeps getting worse and worse. on with you and justin you had a rough couple of months how is everything going? >> everything is good. i -- i'm doing okay. my -- my health scare has, you know, we've -- we've moved on from it. >> jimmy: and you look good. >> and i'm just, kind of, allowing my body the time to heal and do its thing. but i'm doing okay he's also doing okay >> jimmy: okay, good >> obviously, it's been a weird turn of events the last couple months and the last even few days -- >> jimmy: scary. >> but he's okay he's going to be totally okay. >> jimmy: okay, good [ cheers and applause i'm so happy have to -- have to ask you have a giant career and a giant career ahead of you, but now you finally have your own skin care line and we were talking about this this was years ago >> yeah. >> jimmy: we were discussing this >> yeah. >> jimmy: this -- you know, i was looking in it. it's been almost ten years since you moved to the city to start modeling >> yes >> jimmy: and look at you now. but i mean -- but what -- what do you remember about those days >> you know, i moved into the city when i was -- i was 17.
i, kind of, had an agreement with my parents. i had really just started modeling and i was begging them like, "let me move into the city please it's so much easier for just everything for travel and for castings. and they were like, "absolutely not, unless you can afford it on your own. and i was like, "okay, deal. if i book a job where i can afford it, my own rent for the whole year, you have to let me move out." and i booked my first job and it was for the whole year of rent, like, to the dollar. so i was like, "you said." [ laughter ] >> jimmy: "you said, so i -- >> so, i moved out, but i -- i lived with my older sister until i turned 18. but something that i vividly remember about moving into the city and having my first apartment was -- i was out to dinner one night with justin >> jimmy: yeah >> and he was like, "so you got your own place how's it been? like, "you got all your furniture, you got everything you need." and i'm like, "yeah, it's amazing. i love it. you know, i have a couch it's great i have dishes. [ laughter ] "i have food." >> jimmy: it's a big deal. it's a big deal. yeah, yeah >> yeah, like, everything is
such a big deal. and he's like, "well, that's amazing. like, "is there anything you don't have yet is there anything, like, you're missing? and i'm like, "yeah, i don't have a tv yet. but it's like, "i'm gonna get one. it's, like, not a big deal." and he was like, "okay, okay, cool." and then he was driving me home and on the way he was like, "i can't do this. we've got to go to best buy. [ laughter ] so he took me to best buy on the way home and i was, like, mortified because i'm like, "you're not about to buy me a tv." and he bought me a tv. >> jimmy: no way [ audience aws ] [ laughter ] >> yeah. [ laughter and applause >> and he -- he carried it up -- he carried it upstairs himself. he unboxed it. did the whole thing. it was really cute >> jimmy: that's what i'm talking about. justin, you're a good man. you're a gentleman [ cheers and applause >> i still have the tv to this day. >> jimmy: unbox it -- you still have it? >> i still have it to this day i could not get rid of the tv, you guys it was too cute. >> jimmy: yeah, you can't get rid of it now. >> no, it's -- it's still in our apartment to this day. >> jimmy: yeah, you have to keep it. yeah >> yeah. >> jimmy: who -- who got you started in fashion who got you interested do you -- was it your mom? your sister? >> i mean, i definitely always looked at my mom's style and
admired it and i felt like she was always was -- was passionate about clothing and fashion. but i would say i definitely was inspired in the modeling space from the greats. kate moss, christy turlington, naomi campbell >> jimmy: and then i read somewhere you named those icons and you said, "and also, hannah montana." [ laughter ] >> um, yeah. i -- i technically was also very fashion inspired at that time by "hannah montana," aka, miley cyrus. [ la >> jimmy: i mean, that's -- there's a lot of people out there the same -- feel the same way. [ cheers and applause >> right she used to wear, like, outfits on "hannah montana" that i would try to recreate because i just thought they were, like, everything >> jimmy: yeah >> and they were they really were so i would look at stuff she would wear in "hannah montana" and then like, try to find the same skirt and the same belt and, like, the same little t-shirt or whatever. and it's just -- it's just funny. >> jimmy: do you know miley? i mean, you must know miley now. >> i do, yeah. i mean, i actually have known her for a really long time we met when i was, like, 11 years old, and i -- i mean, if she was sitting right here, she would say, like, "yeah, you were just like that annoying little kid, at the time.
but we've become friends, and she's amazing. obviously. >> jimmy: yeah i never knew that your middle name was rhode >> yes it's also my mom's middle name. >> jimmy: beautiful name r-h-o-d-e. i love that. i go, "oh, and that is the name of your new line." >> it is >> jimmy: "rhode." are you -- today is officially -- this is real now ♪ >> jimmy: "you said, so i -- >> so, i moved out, but i -- i lived with my older sister until i turned 18. they really were so i would look at stuff she would wear in "hannah montana" and then like, try to find the same skirt and the same belt and, like, the same little t-shirt or whatever. and there's you posing with

♪ [ cheers and applause >> jimmy: our next guest is a very talented actor who stars in the highly anticipated new film "elvis," which hits theaters june 24th please welcome austin butler [ cheers and applause ♪ >> jimmy: that's what i'm talking about. man, oh, man i'm so happy to meet you, and thank you so much for coming on the show you hit a home run with this movie, buddy i can't even tell you what a a great job you did. we saw it, we screened it the other night. you're fantastic in this movie >> thank you >> jimmy: congratulations. >> thank you so much
>> jimmy: it was so good i want to get down to all the details and ask you all the questions. i mean, just even the accents that elvis had, the way he talked in the '50s the way he talked in the '60s and '70s, it was like three different elvis's. >> i mean, for one thing, you listen to elvis speak. and there's these amazing archives out there of every interview he ever gave and that was the first thing that hit me was, it's not just one voice of elvis his voice changed so much over the years. and so, it's that thing of - >> jimmy: could you -- could you give us an example i'm sorry to put you on the spot [ cheers and applause >> oh, okay. all right. so, i mean, i haven't done this at all and it's been a long time, so take it easy on me, internet all right. so, like an example is when he was 19, and he goes on the louisiana hayride. it's 1954. and his voice -- you know he's nervous -- his voice at that time you speak a lot faster when you're nervous and also he was young. and so, his voice at that point
was like, "well, i'd like to say how happy we are to be down here it's a real honor for us to be -- get a chance to appear on louisiana hayride. like that. >> jimmy: yep. [ cheers and applause >> and then, like, a couple years later, he's 21 it's 1956. and he -- honestly this one i thought of earlier because it's how i feel right now it's that thing where you're not sleeping at night, you're just buzzing -- i can't believe -- just, i've got to take a second. i'm on "jimmy fallon" talking about playing elvis presley. like, you're my hero, man. [ cheers and applause this is crazy. it blows my mind so, at this point, he's 21 and at that point he's more like -- he says, 'cause he's asked, "what are you thinking about at night?" and he says, "well, i -- i -- everything is happening to me so fast in the last year and a a half till i'm all mixed up you know, i can't keep up with everything that's happening. like that. [ cheers and applause
>> jimmy: yeah >> and then for, like a juxtaposition, we can fast forward to '72 there's this great interview in '72, and one of the first things he says is, "well --" 'cause at this point, his voice goes more forward into his face, you know and so then he's like, "well, you know, i -- well, we just came out here from memphis." and -- that sort of thing. >> jimmy: it's coming out of the front -- >> it comes out the front -- >> jimmy: it's like three different characters it's such a great love letter to elvis and any elvis fan dude, ultimate respect and i was reading some article about this, and you were saying what kind of hit home to you, is that his love for his mother >> yeah, yeah. >> jimmy: and how he lost his mom. >> yeah. that was the first thing -- when i first started approaching this, that thing of elvis is always 40 feet tall he's like -- you can only look up to him. and it's hard to, in the beginning, to feel anything but small compared to him. and all those questions, you
know, i'm a shy person i feel very, you know, those moments of am i enough and imposter syndrome and all those things so, it was a process in the beginning of just trying to find his humanity. and i tried many things, but when i watched this documentary and i learned that his mom passed away when he was 23 and that's how old i was when i lost my mom. and that hit me like a freight train because it's the most human thing. that grief that you feel and i know you've experienced it, you know, that feeling and that's the thing where it just humanizes somebody, and you suddenly don't feel alone in that. and so that became the first key into finding his humanity. >> jimmy: yeah you just played it perfect and you got to -- obviously you had to go to graceland, i'm assuming, and meet priscilla >> that was so surreal the first time i went, it was about a month after i was cast and baz and i took this road trip from nashville to memphis i got to record -- the first recording studio i ever was in was rca, where elvis recorded over 250-something songs it's insane.
then we drove to memphis >> jimmy: i'm freaking out [ laughter ] this is unbelievable >> i was just in graceland angie, who runs the spot, she said, "tell jimmy -- because i know he's a big fan. tell him, i will show him everything she'll take you in the archives, everything >> jimmy: really because i have not been. because i was waiting -- i want to wait for the exact right moment to go to graceland. >> you'll get all the hookups. >> jimmy: really >> yeah, for sure. >> jimmy: are you a dancer i'm sorry to ask this. because -- >> no. no >> jimmy: i don't know if i've seen you - >> i wasn't a singer or a dancer >> jimmy: you definitely dance in this. i mean, you -- you're a shy person like, at a party - >> i was always a wallflower you know >> jimmy: really >> yeah. that was the thing is you realize that elvis wasn't -- he didn't do choreography in the way that michael did or something like that he was -- he was all the music moving him and obviously there are signature things that he did that, you know, you have to be specific about but it was all about the way that the music moved him
>> jimmy: could you show me? >> oh, god >> jimmy: again -- [ cheers and applause if you can't -- if you can't >> all right all right. get out here i haven't done this -- it's been a long time [ cheers and applause ♪ all right. this is from the '50s. he had this one that was really fun. i just called it the sidewinder 'cause you can kind of -- you can go from walking into a a side [ cheers and applause >> jimmy: so you start here? >> yeah, start -- basically you know when you move like this >> jimmy: okay yeah >> but you're going to put all your weight on the right foot and then your left foot's just going to sort of tap so, you go to the side first, and then from there you just tap to the side. [ cheers and applause you use this arm almost like a a windmill >> jimmy: a windmill okay ready? >> and this hand can almost be like you're holding a cane or something. >> jimmy: okay >> kind of from the side
