the announcement coming as a million people plan to hit the streets in the biggest protest yet. plus, a country sounding the alarm after 19 people die from tainted alcohol. caught on camera, the paraglider smashing into rocks after losing control. how he survived. and from the close encounter with a great white shark to a baby alligator beating the heat in a pool. >> it's an alligator. >> must see videos this monday morning. good monday morning, everyone. i'm kenneth moton. >> and i'm lana zak in for janai norman. we begin with millions of americans finally getting relief from the heat but it's coming at a cost. >> thunderstorms slicing into the record-setting temperatures. a lightning strike on a florida beach injured eight people, one critically. forecasters say it's just the beginning of the severe weather threat. this morning, the record-setting heat now fueling ferocious storms. >> out of the water.

>> reporter: fire officials in florida say eight people were injured after lightning struck this clearwater beach sunday afternoon. >> i saw the lightning strike right by the volleyball court and all of a sudden i heard people saying that people got hit by the lightning. >> reporter: a 40-year-old man was directly hit by the strike. he's listed in critical condition this morning. several people rushed to help and performed cpr including this man's girlfriend who happens to be a nurse. >> she just jumped right in and started doing the compressions on the guy and rotating with other people. i hope he was going to make it. his girlfriend was right next to him on the floor and she was completely traumatized so i was just hoping he would make it. >> reporter: officials say lifeguards at the beach left their towers due to bad weather just minutes before the lightning strike. in the midwest triple digit heat gave way to heavy wind and rain leaving half a million customers without power in wisconsin and michigan. >> had that hit the house it would have taken the bedroom off. >> reporter: these storms are now setting their sights on the

east coast according to abc's senior meteorologist rob marciano. >> that front has not moved much but did get through chicago. dropped all the way down to 76 degrees so some of that cooling is pushing east. a good 20 to 30 degrees cooler. with this is going to come some rain, maybe some strong thunderstorms by 5:00, d.c. to philly to new york. some will be really heavy in the rainfall department. >> we are looking forward to that heat relief. and we'll take a closer look at the forecast in less than five minutes. the uk is trying to figure out how to respond to iran after it seized a british oil tanker in what is being described an act of retaliation. newly released video shows iran's revolutionary guard taking over the tanker with nearly two dozen crew members on board. a british warship tried to intervene, but it was too far away to help. abc's megan tevrizian has more on the rising tensions. megan. >> reporter: yeah, hi, lana. as this latest crisis plays out in the persian gulf, president trump ordered more troops to deploy to the middle east. tensions with iran escalating this morning. new video released by iran

showing the moment iran revolutionary guard seized a british flag tanker in the strait of hormuz, a vital oil passageway. notice the empty deck and an iranian flag hoisted from the ship's bridge. in this newly obtained audio, listen to the exchange between the crews. >> if you obey, you will be safe. >> stena impero, this is british warship approximatetrot 236. >> you are ordered to change your course to 360, 360 degrees immediately. >> reporter: the ship captured friday by masked iranian commandos. iranian officials say it violated international maritime law, but british officials say iran is calling it retaliation for the uk's seizure of an iranian tanker just over two weeks ago that was believed to be headed to syria, a breach of eu sanctions. >> well, let's be clear, this was a hostile and aggressive act. >> reporter: this latest seizure coming one day after the u.s. downing of an iranian drone

that was flying too close to an american navy ship in the gulf. on sunday secretary of state mike pompeo saying despite the fact these are not the actions of a country headed toward the right direction, the u.s. is willing to talk. >> we're prepared to negotiate across a broad spectrum of issues with no preconditions. >> reporter: and british leaders are expected to address parliament today to discuss how they will respond to the ship's seizure. lana. >> megan tevrizian in her abc news "atm" debut. thank you so much, megan. well, there was also a in tensions with venezuela with the u.s. accusing a venezuelan fighter jet of coming dangerously close to an american intelligence plane. u.s. officials say the jet aggressively shadowed the military plane in international airspace. but the venezuelans say it happened over their territory. embattled president nicolas maduro remains in power despite calls by the u.s. and other countries for him to step down. two of europe's biggest airlines canceled flights to cairo, egypt, over unspecified

security concerns. this after the british government warned of a, quote, heightened risk of terrorism against aviation. on saturday british airways canceled flights for seven days. german based lufthansa did the same but only for one day. back here at home, president trump's fired off a new wave of tweets feeding into his ongoing feud with four congresswomen of color that devolved into supporters chanting send her back. the president called the freshmen lawmakers weak and insecure saying they're not capable of loving our country. democratic congressman elijah cummings praised the women and said he's honored to serve with them and also made it clear what he thought about the president. >> we were trying to integrate an olympic size pool near my house, and i heard the same kind of chants, go home. you don't belong here. >> do you believe president trump is a racist? >> i believe he is -- yes, no doubt about it. >> but white house officials and the president's campaign aides are coming to his defense. they took aim at the congresswomen and insisted that

the president is no racist. >> look, i have worked with president trump for two years. and he is not a racist. he is a results oriented president who is focused on helping uplift all americans. >> but the president has been sending mixed messages. he did nothing while supporters in north carolina chanted send her back about representative ilhan omar. he disavowed the chant the next day then he called supporters at the rally, quote, incredible patriots. time now for a look at your weather for this monday morning. >> good morning. some relief on the way for our monday as cooler air works into most of the nation. across the deep south, we're still talking high temperatures in the 90s. that front that's moving through bringing the cooler and less humid air will bring severe storms into the northeast and mid-atlantic as well. we need to watch for damaging wind gusts and flooding downpours. some of those storms spread into

the walls of a historic building near houston have come tumbling down. the long abandoned first pasadena state bank was imploded. the 56-year-old 15-story building was the only skyscraper in pasadena, texas.

puerto rico is bracing for a massive protest today with a million people expected to hit the streets. they're demanding that governor ricardo rossello resign on sunday. he announced that he wouldn't seek re-election. he's also stepping down as leader of the pro-statehood party, but that's not enough for the island's residents. they have been frustrated for years with a weak economy and corruption. but the final straw may have been leaked offensive messages between rossello and his aides. >> he is just so stubborn. he just doesn't get it, and there is a lot of anger. >> when do you think these protests will stop? >> i think it'll stop when ricky resigns. >> today is the tenth consecutive day of protests. an islandwide strike is also planned. the governor is facing impeachment proceedings. costa rica issued a national alert after officials announced at least 19 people have died from tainted alcohol. the deaths happened in six cities around the central american nation since last month. authorities believe the alcohol was tainted with a toxic

chemical, methanol, which is used in fuel and antifreeze. six brands have reportedly tested positive for some level of tampering. 30,000 bottles of alcohol have been confiscated. neutrogena is recalling its popular light therapy acne mask over possible eye injuries. the mask uses blue light therapy to target acne causing bacteria. it also used red light therapy to reduce inflammation. users should stop using the mask and contact the customer care center for refunds. the beauty giant says the recall was issued out of an abundance of caution. "the lion king" is definitely feeling the love this morning. the live action remake from abc's parent company disney earned 185 million over the weekend. that's the biggest domestic opening of all time for a disney remake. it's the biggest domestic launch for a pg-rated movie and the biggest july opening ever. and "avengers: endgame" is now the highest grossing movie ever dethroning james cameron's

that saying follow-up conversations may take place but nothing has been planned. lana. >> thanks, will. investigators in canada are looking into a new lead in the murder of an american woman and her australian boyfriend. a witness has reportedly come forward saying she saw a man arguing with chynna deese and lucas fowler before they were found dead along a remote highway. police believe that the couple's van broke down after they set out to explore canada's national parks. family members are desperately seeking answers. >> we're never going to get full closure on this and it's going to hurt the rest of our lives. >> and i want people to know, you know, who she was, she volunteered and she gave. she wasn't materialistic and she was a beautiful person. >> a canadian couple said that they offered to help the pair with their van but that they told them that they were okay and didn't need help. investigators are trying to determine if the attack was random or targeted. a paraglider from washington

towards the boat when the great white comes along and enjoys some lunch. that young boy who was watching retreats, i think, in expected horror. i would have had the same reaction. >> he really took off fast, right. he was like i don't want to be next. if that shark is going to jump onto this boat, i'm going to take off. >> the boy's video shot the video and called it a crazy fishing story that gave everyone a pretty good scare. now, finally last week we had the alligator known as chance the snapper. >> we did. >> captured in chicago. and something a little bit different. >> some homeowners on long island, new york, found a small gator in their pool just as they were about to go for a swim. a man was about to clean out the pool's filter when he spotted this alligator there. he's a little guy, though. >> i think he's surprisingly cute. >> yeah, he said he has no idea where it actually came from. i actually saw the movie "crawl" over the weekend. i'm still freaked out about it.

you may have noticed it yesterday afternoon inland. it's going to get even warmer. low to mid 60s in our inland neighborhoods. 52 in santa rosa. increasing clouds along the coast and into the bay with temperatures in the mid to upper 50s. let's see where we end up this afternoon. 62 at half moon bay, 67 in san francisco, 75 in oakland. 86 in san jose, low to mid 90s inland. back to you guys. we have one issue in emeryville. westbound 80 just before powell, we have a semi that hit a lot of an ten nadir barrels. a lot of sand in the roadway. a little heavy traffic in the area if you ear headed to downtown oakland and the maze. other than that, very quiet. westbound 80 highway 4 to the maze, about 16 minutes.

nine minutes across the bay bridge and southbound 101 san francisco to sfo in the green at nine minutes. chp officers came across this lexus on fire this morning around 1:30. it burned on mckeown road beneath the highway 4 overpass. driver was nowhere in sight. firefighters got it under control within a half hour. no damage was done to the overpass. a husband is dead and his wife in the hospital after their anniversary visit to san francisco turned tragic. police say a tesla driver ran a red light and plowed into them. >> abc 7 news reporter jobina fortson is live at san francisco police headquarters with the details. jobina. >> reporter: good morning. police tell us the woman involved here, the driver of the rented tesla is 22 years old and from san francisco or vallejo. they don't believe alcohol or drugs were a factor here. it's possible that speed was. the crash happened yesterday

afternoon as the driver of the rented tesla blew through a red light at taylor street and farrell. the tesla driver broad-sided a mini cooper and hit a married couple walking in the crosswalk. 39-year-old benjamin dean was killed, his wife taken to the hospital. the couple is from clovis in the central valley. the two were in san francisco celebrating their anniversary. >> we don't know if she was in autonomous mode. that will be later determined. speed was a factor. it's a rental vehicle, unnorthern if she took it to its limits or what occurred. >> reporter: police have surveillance video of the crash. they're looking to see if the tesla was involved in any other crimes over the weekend. police also tell us the posted speed limit was around 25 or 30 miles per hour. based on the
