but we are proud to deliver an important message. when it comes to the support of israel, democrats and republicans stand together. [applause] k and i have worked for 18 years to strengthen the u.s. israel relationship as partners and friends. [applause] work together most closely as members of the appropriations subcommittee on foreign operations. >> she was chairwoman at the time and i was ranking member. on theationship is based fact we agree on many issues like the united states unequivocal support for israel. there are some issues we don't agree on.
but we always listen to each other and recognize in order to get things done, we have to work together. [applause] and we share a can't believe that keeping america safe requires a network of strong partnership around the world. roles, we havee to ensure congress supports our friends and allies through foreign aid. [applause] our assistance plays a crucial role in advancing our national security interest and make it just a small fraction of the federal government's budget -- less than 1%. minor for that investment, the united states gets a major payoff -- stronger
alliances, a safer, more stable world, and a boost to our economy. [applause] assistance to israel is one of the cornerstones of the u.s. israel relationship. there is no shortage of dangers facing the jewish state, whether it is the destabilizing actions of iran, the syrian civil war, the spread of isis, or the constant threat of violence from terrorist groups like hamas and hezbollah. israel.nvestment helped gainost steadfast partner access to the latest technology and resources to defend itself, no matter the threat.
because israel buys mostly american technology and supplies foreign aid, our investment net sus more exports, more growth, and more jobs right here in america. [applause] most importantly, a modest investment in foreign assistance is the most cost-effective way to prevent slips from arising in the first place. that is why we are such andcates of security israel why we are grateful to the people in this audience who worked tirelessly to engage all of us in congress on this vital issue, both republican and democrat. [applause] >> the relationship we have
built on the appropriations committee has helped us work together on other fronts to advance a strong u.s. israel relationship. ast year, we co-authored byartisan letter, cosigned 394 other house members -- [applause] support for ar two state solution, supporting direct negotiation between the israelis and the palestinians, and denouncing one-sided anti-israel resolutions in the united nations. [applause] and earlier this month,
thanks to bipartisan support, the house approved more than $600 million for israeli missile defense programs like iron down and an additional $42 million -- u.s. israeli anti- we will continue to work together. the stakes on this issue and the entire foreign aid budget are too high. when it comes to american support for israel, partnership must overcome partisanship.
