9:53 pm
i'm so excited to be here with my colleague congressman keith ellison, the new deputy chair of the dnc. we are united as a party. we have is so much work ahead of us because across america, people are fearful. people are fearful for our future. democrats united are the hope for that future. we will put our values and action. we have a special election today in delaware, we have boots on the ground, we have actions all over the country today. strength in numbers, the millions of people coming out ,ince the inauguration to say donald trump, you do not stand for our values, we are marshaling and harnessing that remarkable energy moving forward to build a nation where our values of inclusion, opportunity, optimism, the value of diversity are in place. it is great to be here today.
9:54 pm
we have a lot of work ahead. we have a lot of things to do and we will do it together. [speaking spanish] rep. ellison: thank you. let me take a moment to
9:55 pm
congratulate chairman tom perez. it is a tremendous honor that he has extended the invitation for me to join him in his leadership of the dnc. i think one thing tom is clear on, it is going to take all of us. he is our leader, but i think he is ready to call on all americans to help rebuild the democratic party and stand for always share, prosperity for all, respect for all, inclusion of all. we are ready to do it. let me say this, for anyone who supported me in this race, i want to say thank you, i want you to support tom perez. i want you to put your energy, time, resources behind making this the best democratic national committee it can be. i think i can speak for the other candidates in the race and all of us are united in the idea that tom is our chair and we are
9:56 pm
proud to be part of the dnc, and we are proud to say that this day is the day that the democrats are coming together to chart a new course for a bright future for the american people. >> is today a turning point for the democratic party? mr. perez: we are very excited. people all across america, there are more rallies today. we are going to win a special election in delaware. we have an opportunity here in the sixth congressional district in atlanta where we have a real shot. we are moving forward in new jersey and virginia. i think we're going to elect the credit governors of both of those states. we are ready to hit the ground running. what we also know is that our party succeeds when we have a real presence in all of the states and territories. it is not just the presidential elections, what we are united on his our very strong belief that
9:57 pm
our mission of this party, this committee, is to elect people from the school board to the senate, and the best way to do that is to do party building that congressman ellison did in minnesota, and we see being done elsewhere. we have to do that, because we have lost over 900 seats. >> people who supported you that says it you did not win, the democratic party is not the party for them? rep. ellison: here is what i want to say to them. if you care about your loved ones that are having cemeteries inc. dimmest -- cemeteries of being desecrated like the jewish cemeteries are being right now, if you care about those people, you have to stay here and support tom perez as chair. that is what you have to do. a small thing, it is
9:58 pm
a big thing. and the fate of our nation, i believe, is in the balance right now, and all hands on deck. i trust tom perez. me, they need to trust tom perez, as well. i had the benefit of sitting next to this man on many debates. vision that i share. it got to a point where, we agreed on a lot of things. there was one press report, and i love you guys and you know that, but one report said there's not enough arguing going on in this particular race because there is a consensus. as tom said, we are going to build from the dock after to the senate and fight in every state and territory and abroad. there are fights going on like today.
9:59 pm
our revolution that began with bernie sanders, who i want to thank. he is having rallies and every congressional district. we have to win elections. mr. perez: absolutely. >> do you agree with your new -- presidentor trump has done several things that bring up the question of impeachment? seenerez: you have not republicans asking for an investigation. you cannot have the attorney general out on the stump for president doing the .nvestigation
10:00 pm
we have to make sure -- it's the tables have been turned and hillary clinton had one the election with the help of donald trump -- with vladimir putin, i confuse them. with the help of all of this hacking, republicans, how many benghazi i hope that this independent investigation will be done, and i will beside -- happy to see republicans going for it as well. >> we had this conversation week when thisappened decision about deputies and chairs how did that come together? we have been friends for a long time, and when we set out to talk about this campaign, the number one value was that there is no one -- not just the two of us -- but there is no one
10:01 pm
in this race who wanted to it at any cost. this race is not about keith ellison, not about tom perez, or any of the other candidates. that weout making sure are helping the immigrants who are being potentially centcom. sent home. -- it is about making sure the worker who lost his report job -- his or her job get help. in order to move forward it is imperative to be in a we have spoken for some time about how we bring together unity? is the tables had been turned, i would have been honored to serve under congressman alice -- ellison. we have spoken about this for a sometime. we think it is really important, and i am very honored that we are here together, because we are the embodiment of goods energy. chairman has been
10:02 pm
fundraising almost primarily. how do you see your role changing? >> the goal of the chair in the is certainly one componentry we have to lead the fight not only against donald trump, but the fight to make sure people understand our position of affirmative opportunity. we have to make sure we are implementing our shared vision of culture change. we are no longer simply the committee that helped elect the president. we're the committee that helps electing people up and down the democratic ticket. who want to take back the democratic senate, we need to take back the state houses. we need to make sure we are working on the issue of internal culture change within the dn the -- d&c and equally importantly, we need to do more to collaborate with our partners in
10:03 pm
the progressive movement, because you watch what is going on, and the existential threats, and we cannot be alone. we have to be in partnership. the union movement is under attack, planned parenthood is under attack, and the democratic national committee will always be there to defend our friends. what is your message to the folks in the back of the room? we could not hear what was said on page because they were drowning out what was happening. message as far as senator allison and sen. sanders: go when you say -- sanders? --messages i look forward tom perez: my messages i look forward to listening and learning from you. if we are all in this together. out on thehave gone
10:04 pm
road over the past two or three months, i have had fascinating learning moment, talking to people, some of them voted for senator sanders, some of them voted for jill stein, and gary johnson power hillary clinton. what is so important to understand is what unites us is our differences, and as congressman ellison said, we are staring unbelievably existential threats right in the eye right now, and we have to be united moving forward, because we have 70 people across this country who are fearful -- so many people across this country who are fearful. we have a lot to work -- of work to do, but i think our diversity is the strength of the party. >> what the folks in the back of the room? tom perez: i love passion.
10:05 pm
because we cash and need to make sure we address the abiding issues and equality. when congressman ellingson -- ellison and i worked together on the overtime room, -- rule, that was addressing the passions. detroit wasn in part of the fight for 15 movement, and when i met her she slept in her car. she had three children. we can do better than that. i have the same passion because america is only america -- truly america when everybody has a fair shake, and not enough people are getting a fair shake. that is why we are so aligned, because we have to make sure this economy and the country works for everyone, not just for a few at the top. what about your question? keith ellison: i absolutely will remain at the house of representatives, because if tom
10:06 pm
is leading the way i will be be contact with other democratic institutions we need to be in communication with too. we need to stop so much sidling and find more institutions to cooperate. i will solely in the house. -- still be in the house. >> [indiscernible] sendw are you going to those hundreds of millions of dollars in contracts to statehouses? tom perez: both of you have talked a lot about party building and the need to build infrastructures you can elect people. >> can you talk over the next couple of months the check just dust changes and actions we are will see at the committee to create this infrastructure and what it will look like? tom perez: we are putting together now a transition application so that we can what the immediate opportunities are, the immediate and understanding
10:07 pm
those immediate needs moving forward. i expect over the next week or 10 days that we will get a pretty comprehensive email or some sort of directive out to members asking them our questions. as you heard me say earlier today, there is an incredible amount of talent in the dnc. they are chronically underutilized, and we talked about that before. among the questions that we want to discuss collaboratively, hadley channel this remarkable channel this do we remarkable energy? how do we partner and turn that energy into sustainable a momentum around preserving the affordable care act? what the immediate and construction needs of the dnc? after the election, there were plenty of people that were laid tends to happen after
10:08 pm
elections. there are a lot of basic nuts and bolts we have to do. we need to do external outreach not only with members but to the broader community, and this is like doing maintenance on a plane at 25,000 feet, because you cannot shut the plane town -- down and do that. i'm excited about the weeks ahead and i will be looking forward to working with not just the two of us, but the other candidate, -- candidates, who have all asked how can i help? so many dnc leaders and political friends elsewhere who are saying thank you. beene budget has not transparent. hundreds of millions of dollars have been spent on national contract. how are we going to make sure the money goes to the states art that are starting -- that are starting for -- starving for resources? tom perez: transparency is
10:09 pm
something that you are talking about on many levels. in transparency, for instance, means making sure that decisions are made in an open and transparent manner. transparency and budgeting is a huge priority is a huge priority -- in terms of making sure that we are including members of the dnc. we are making it available and , and as we spend money making sure the permit process -- for kermit parsis -- procurement process is fair and partial. -- impartial. we have never had an invention that does not have a steep learning curve. --saw the shame shared value still have the same shared value of making sure that the dnc's -- firing- fire lane on all cylinders. you go there, you listen, you learn, and then you innovate. >> is a going to need to be a
10:10 pm
democraticge in the donor culture, in that money is given more to the state as the dnc, rather than the outside political groups that some people have -- believed to have siphoned resources. tom perez: one aspect of culture change is doing a better job of collaborating with our partners out there in the progressive movement. party,at the republican because there has been a lot of collaboration between the rnc and the koch brothers, and the nonprofit infrastructure, including but not limited to the senators baptist church, and that partnership has yielded results at the ballot box. we need to do a much better job of that collaboration as well. as i said before, we cannot be
10:11 pm
bowling alone. we have to be pulling together as we move forward. that is of the we are both very committed to. the good news is that these partners the progressive movement our partners that we have spent virtually our entire career working with. i'm actually very excited about our ability to hit the ground running with them in collaboration. >> you talked a lot about the disagreements in the party. consistent primaries [indiscernible] tom perez: are you referring to [indiscernible] >> or how the congressional races and the state legislative races -- do you see talking about people coming from the progressive window to challenge incumbent democrats is something that is a good thing, a bit and healthy thing for the party? we are the democratic
10:12 pm
party. that is who we are. our job is to help get them theted, and democrats democratic party -- democratic the democratic party in massachusetts is different from the one in west virginia. virginia may west have different stands on different issues, but our job is to elect democrats. what we have in common, whether you are in west virginia or massachusetts or kansas, is a commitment to economic opportunity. i think we are focused on that message of jobs, good jobs, and help for the middle class, retirement security. that is the message left to the democrats in missouri, west virginia, minnesota, and across the country. that is what we will make sure we are doing. >> redoing some sort of project over the next few months or weeks that is a more from the one in
10:13 pm
2016? congressman, do you anticipate getting involved with that building out some project that looks at internally what would wrong during the primary process? tom perez: absolutely. keith ellison: let me tell you, we will have to look at what went wrong, across the numbers and get sister civics -- the civics, because we have an idea what we want to ask others about it. the real thing is we have to win. people are expecting us to win. we have to be geared toward timeng elections in this to come. , we are 2017-2018, 2020 focused on the districting and we are looking back but looking back to look forward.
